Big name directors want the big cubicle by the window

By: STEPHEN LACKEY
Date: Sunday, January 14, 2007

There aren’t many comedies I keep track of these days, as you can probably tell by this article but The Office is deserving of the attention it gets.  The series bucks formula and delivers a unique experience for a half hour comedy.  It’s a relief to see a live action comedy that has enough faith in the writing to do the series without a laugh track.  The Office, if you haven’t seen it, is shot and cut in a documentary style.  The only mark the series has against it is that it’s a remake of a British series of the same name.  Can we really not come up with anything new here in the States?  Anyway, the reason I bring the series up is that a couple of our favorite genre writer/directors have signed on to direct episodes of the series.  Both JJ Abrams and Joss Whedon are confirmed to direct episodes that will air in late February during sweeps.  While having them behind the camera won’t mean we’ll suddenly get vampires or international spies it does tell us what they’re doing instead of finishing up the scripts for the next Star Trek film and Wonder Woman. To be fair, Abrams has reported that the script for the next Trek film is finished and filming will begin later this year with a 2008 release date in mind.

One other note of interest I caught this week is that a feature length Battlestar Galactica movie to be released direct to DVD is in the planning stage.  The story would take place between the events of season 3 and 4 but it would still be a stand alone story.  Show runners say that the deal hinges on whether the series is picked up for a fourth season.  First we hear that a new Babylon 5 movie is coming to DVD and now BSG.  Looks like direct to DVD is finally worth keeping an eye on.

There’s a myriad of good TV this week with the final two hours of the 24 season opener being at the top of my list but otherwise there’s something new to see almost every night this week!  This week promises the first appearance of the Justice League on Smallville, so good or bad, I’m there.  Other than 24, I’m looking forward to the premiere of the Dresdin Files and the return of Battlestar Galactica.

Sci-fi is showing all the BSG episodes from this season on Monday, starting at 8am.

And people keep getting this mixed up. If the movie is made it will NOT take place between season 3 and 4. It that was the case they would have to deal with the season three finale and Moore said that they won't. It seems to me that it will be a "lost episode" because they even talked about a favorite charater coming back. That lost likely means it will take place in the past but will searve as a backstory to a major season 4 story.

On what are you basing your info on the DTV BSG (look at all those letters!)? Where did you see Moore's comments? Do you have a source link or anything. All the stories I've seen about the project have said it would take place between Season 3 and 4. Maybe all the reports are making the same mistake based off one source.

I could see either approach to the movie working. The lost episode could be about the final 5, since I understand we find out who they are in the second half of this season. That would certainly be an interesting back story to discuss. If the season finale doesn't have everyone tied up in a single imminent even (like the half-season season finale) then they could also do a movie like the webisodes that took place between seasons 2 and 3. Whatever they're planning, I'm all for it. I just hope it doesn't mean we'll have to wait longer for season 4 to resume.

Has anyone heard any inklings about whether SciFi wants to pick up BSG for a fourth season? I keep thinking they will because losing SG-1 and BSG for the next tv year would leave a major programming vacuum. They would have no established shows around which they could anchor a block. Atlantis has the lowest ratings of the three, so it seems like a poor choice, especially with it's more popular sister program ending. Of course, this is SciFi, so who knows what kind of decision making process they use?

I loved watching Gangs of New York. Why this movie or The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers lost best picture to Chicago is something I'll never figure out. This year, history may be repeating itself with another musical, Dreamgirls, going up against The Departed, another Scorsesee picture which should win hands down. I like musicals as much as the next guy, but best picture? I don't think so.

By the way, anybody see that Mad TV which had alternate endings to The Sound of Music? It was funnier than anything Saturday Night Live has come up with recently.

The DVD will be RELEASED between season 3 and 4. That's what people are messing up. They think it will take place then, when it won't.

So, if it goes forward, it would be a direct-to-DVD movie that would also air on Sci Fi?

RMoore: “That’s the general gist of what we’re talking about. If we do it, it would NOT be a conclusion to the season’s cliffhanger.”

Would it be something based on the Caprica concept that has been floating around?

RMoore: “No, it would take place in Galactica world that we’ve seen. WE WOULD NOT TIE IT DIRECTLY TO OUR SEASON CLIFFHANGER. We’re looking for a way to sync it up with the show, almost like, ‘Here’s a back story to something that we might do later.’”

How would it be possible to not tie in with with the season 3 finale if it takes place after it? And the season 3 cliffhanger is supposed to be the biggest yet. So it would be like going "BSG has found Earth, but the Cylons are right behind them... to be continues" and then having a movie take place after that, but not dealing with it.

I'm sure Joss Whedon can multitask. Afterall he executive produced both Buffy and Angel for years.

Yeah, SciFi would look pretty stupid, if after bragging on all their about how their BSG has beome best show on Television they cancelled it. Of course that did stop them when they were bragging about Farscape.

End of Season 3 adds "We're proud to renew Farscape for two more season."

Half way throgh season 4. "The journey is finally over."

If ever there was a WTF moment, that was it.

Green Arrow and Aquaman cool, got I'm with that. Impluse, stading in for Flash, okay.

But Dudes: Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern ever here of 'em. At least tell us LexCorp will have Martian Manhunter there trying to break out of an alien autopsy table.

Something tells me we won't be getting a live action Black Canary vs. Huntress chick fight either.

Come on Paul Dini/Bruce Timm show these boys how it's done.

But yeah, I'd be watching too, if had that channel. Again I'll have to wait and rent the DVD.
