Hulk Teaser Coming Soon & Berkeley Shooting Info

By: Joe Hendren
Date: Thursday, April 25, 2002

Corona Coming Attractions has received word from a source that a teaser trailer for The Hulk will be included with every print of Spider-Man that ships out next week.  While certain movie theaters do show any trailers that are included with a given film print, with that same film... many theaters choose which trailers they show, and with what movie.

The teaser, which according to CCA's informant, runs approximately one minute long and depicts Bruce Banner (portrayed by Eric Bana) in a brief scene. Bana provides narration for the scene with Banner standing in front of a bathroom mirror.  The report goes on to say that the narration provides insight into Banner's mental and emotional state, in that he is frightened... "not of what he's becoming, but that he's beginning to enjoyit."  The trailer then shows a close-up of Banner's eyes which begin to turn green.  The imminent trasformation has disastrous results.

In related news, The Daily Californian has provided an in-depth look at filming for The Hulk, which has been taking place on and around the University of California-Berkeley campus.

The article discusses the choice of shooting in Berkeley, including its benefits and its challenges.  Director Ang Lee is quoted as saying that Berkeley "is a good place to tell the story."  Part of the reasoning for this is the area's lab facilities including the Advanced Light Source, which is reportedly a critical location in the film.  In two scenes shot at the lab, Nick Nolte who plays Bruce Banner's father and Sam Elliot who plays General "Thunderbolt" Ross are engaged in an argument.  One of the scenes is set "in the past" and the other in present day.

But aside from the lab technology featured in the film, the area was chosen for its asthetic purposes.  Reportedly, Lee chose a specific hill near thecampus for certain scenes in which Bana is riding a bicycle.  The incredibly steep hill is said to have a great view of the area.

Another interesting bit of information provided by The Daily Californian is that in the film, Bana's character has to stop "three escaped convicts who are also turned into mutants as a result of the experiment (that created the Hulk)." The reason this is worth mentioning is because in the original Hulk script, penned by Jonathan Hensleigh, three convicts were used for experimentation in a project that would turn ordinary humans into super-workers to help colonize Mars.  The process goes terribly awry and mutates the three convicts, who subsequently escape and go on a terror spree.

If the current script does indeed include these three convicts, who were used as the primary antagonists when Hensleigh was planning on making his directorial debut with Hulk back in 1998, then it is possible that other plot elements have also remained intact. However this may not necessarily be the case.  You may recall that in the upcoming Spider-Man film, the only element left over from James Cameron's original story is that of Peter Parker's organicwebshooters, as opposed to the mechanical ones of the comic books.
