Originally released on the NES in 1988, the BIONIC COMMANDO will be returning once again, says Capcom through a press release at Gamespot. Some of you may remember playing the best selling classic nearly two decades ago and some of you may not. It featured a character named Nathan Spencer with a grappling hook for an arm which made for some unique situations for traveling around obstacles or taking out enemies. The character was sent on a rescue mission to save fellow agent Super Joe. This next adaptation of the character will have the same name (no "2" attached to the title) but the story will be somewhat different.

Plot Summary: After serving his country honorably in conflict with the Imperials, technologically enhanced agent Nathan Spencer is framed for a number of crimes by his superiors and sentenced for execution. Fate intervenes, as an experimental terrorist weapon is detonated in Ascension City on the day Spencer is to be executed. With the city in ruins and Spencer uniquely equipped to handle the many skyscrapers, monorails, and suspended roadways, the government reluctantly turns to its imprisoned bionic commando for help.

The new game will be released on the PS3, Xbox360 and the PC. By the way gamers, this is only one of a few major announcements this week out of Capcom. They're having a closed-to-the-public "Gamers Day" in London on Wednesday and some more major developments will be announced. Capcom has been using a countdown clock, titled "Prepare Yourself" , on their official website for the past few days leading to speculation around the web. Could it be a Street Fighter 4, a Dead Rising 2, a return of Mega Man? Nobody knows at this point but we shall learn what this major announcement is in the next few days...

It was originally an arcade game in 1987, and on the NES (not SNES) in 1988. Can't wait to see if this is a worthy successor or if it's another Spy Hunter. :/

This was one of my favorite games as a child, so I'm disappointed that (like so many games) it's hitting every platform BUT Nintendo. Ever since I got my Wii, I've hoped for a Bionic Commando game where I can aim the grapple and go swinging while shooting Nazis.

NES? haha... try Commodore 64, Amiga, Spectrum, and Atari ST in 1988. Rarely did anything worthwhile get released on NES first.

I actually kinda liked the revamped Spy Hunter a couple years ago...

Bionic Commando was a blast back in the day. The last boss was so hard, I remember I had a tips and tricks book (yes kiddos... before the advent of websites like gamefaqs, you had to buy a book) that said the game was unbeatable. The second edition of that book basically said "Ooops. We goofed."

The original game was pretty cool, I remember also spending a butt load of quarters on the arcade-geez that game was addicting. From the looks of this one, Capcom looks like its going to stick to its Devil May Cry style of gameplay. Hopefully, Capcom won't use Spencer's bionic arm in some generic/gimmicky way. Last thing we need is another Rygar imitator. Now, if we can only get an Ikari Warriors remake!

Does this game have anything to do with the original Commando game, story-wise?

I know they were both made by Capcom and they both have the character Super Joe, but it's a different time setting and a side scroller, rather than a bird's eye point of view.

I was just curious if the plot line was continuous or what's the deal? I must have missed this game back in the day.
