Ever since Universal Pictures announced their plans to adapt the video game BioShock into a tent pole feature under the direction of Gore Verbinski (Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy), fans have wondered whether it was a feasible venture given the box office history of game-to-movie releases. When those first rumors appeared suggesting the budget could be upwards of $200 million, the doubts continued and were even confirmed later when the director left the project over budget disputes. The studio then brought in helmer Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) to direct from a script by John Logan. We haven't had updates on the turnaround since that signing until now.

Kotaku has passed along an interview that BioShock game production designer Ken Levine had with the Washington D.C. station 106.7 The Fan, in which he says that the project isn't dead quite yet.

"I will say that it is still an active thing," Levine told the radio station. "And it is something we are actively talking about and actively working on. The movie business is complicated — I can't tell you whether it's going to happen for sure or it's not going to happen for sure, but it's something we are actively discussing, quite actively, and actively working on."

You can listen to the rest of the interview here.

Plot Concept: Barely surviving a plane crash, the player lands in icy uncharted waters and discovers an undersea city called Rapture, a failed utopia whose citizens had embraced genetic engineering before the city descended into pure anarchy. Power and greed have run amok and the city has succumbed to civil war. It is a gripping game that forces the player to make complex moral choices. Fans have embraced "BioShock's" mysterious world filled with powerful technology and fascinating characters. "BioShock" is also renowned for its rich visual detail depicting a gorgeous Art Deco world set deep beneath the sea.

I hope this project is not going to die. I can't see it making it though cos of the budget, as mentioned in the article... But I sooooo hope I'm wrong... The Big Daddy on the big screen - It'd be awesome!

Personally I want Neill Blomkamp ti direct Bioshock and HAS TO BE RATED R.  Then it will be done right.  :D  Otherwise it would suck balls.  It is a mature rated Rated R game.  Fukk and this PG 13 BULLSH*t  I know Disney has going on in their heads.  RATED R B*TCHES!!!!!!!

I've noticed that some of the TV commercials are using the Halo formula. Why is that? last I heard Halo wasn't being made.

Agreed the movie has to be R rated or simply dont bother doing it. It will be really cool to see a scene of a Big Daddy defending a little sister while Jack watches how the Big Dady slaugters all the splicers.

After watching District 9 I realized that Neill Blomkamp would make an excellent Bioskock movie.  Gritty, dark, and hardcore as HELL.  Why not?  It would be RUTHLESS.  I think he has the chops to do it right.

Wow Todd890, you obviously know better than the millions of people who loved both games, and the hundreds of critics who scored both titles with nearly universally high marks.  Who the hell cares if you weren't impressed?  Why do we need to know that?  Am I supposed to alter my own perspective because some random Todd guy didn't dig the Bioshock series?  Why do I care?  What is the point of posting something that inane and pointless?

As for "some of the TV commercials" using the "Halo formula", What commercials?  The ones for Bioshock?  They don't really resemble any aspect of Halo in any way, shape or form.  Microsoft and Bungie have been doing a series of live action short films to promote Halo 3, Halo 3 ODST and now Halo Reach.  What any of that has to do with the Bioshock film is beyond me.  "Last you heard" Halo wasn't being made, but evidently, you don't exactly have your finger on the pulse of current, or recently passed events.  The Halo film was derailed after a deal fell through with Peter Jackson and Neill Blomkamp, but sources at Microsoft, Bungie, and 343 Industries have maintained that the Project will happen, and it's just a matter of finding the right partner in a studio, or pulliing the right strings to make the film internally.  They've maintained a working relationship with Weta (who was supposed to do the effects for the failed Jackson production).  Even as recently as this year's SDCC, during the Halo Universe panel 343 head Frank O'Connor stated that it will happen when the time is right.

Logic would lead the logically minded to the conclusion that all of the promotional short films are essentially small, relatively inexpensive field tests to that lay the groundwork for a Halo film, while conveniently promoting whichever game is currently being marketed.  The live action spots will make shopping the project to potential studios easier.

I would watch the halo movie made by Peter Jackson and Neill Blomkamp.  To me that would pretty freaking EPIC.  But we shall see....

I never said I knew better.

I've played games liked these two before. They are all the same point and shoot or use different weapons to kill enemies. The main reason I wasn't impressed with them was this fact. The stories alone I do like but the ending for the first game didn't impress me either since I've seen endings like that before.

Resistance, Bioshock, Halo, F.e.a.r are all the same game but with a different outlet and a different story line.

I'm not confused with the two different video games, Halo commercials for just Reach and ODST that I understand. I've played ODST and it was mildly interesting to say the least.

Last I heard Steven Speilburg was attached to Halo, I also heard the Weta was field testing in shorts before you posted. So I'm not clueless.

Peter and Neil teaming up, get real. The main reason Peter wanted to make the film was for the money alone and nothing else. I do keep up with the times and the current news for Halo. You're  right about one thing, it will be made one day but not any time soon.

Last I heard this is a free country and I have a right to my opinon. I have no idea why you want to argue over the fact. My nephew told me about Bioshock and he thought I might enjoyed it, I picked them up out of interest to see if I liked it or not. The graphic's are great the story line is excellent, it just feels like Halo underwater to me .Go peak on someone else.

To finish this off, there should be a half hour Halo series on TV.
