Madmancreator Mike Allred told Comics2Film that there's good news/bad news onthe Madman movie front.
The good news isthat filmmaker Robert Rodriguez (El Mariachi, The Faculty)has renewed his option on the comic concept. Rodriguez first picked up theoption in 1999 as a project that he would write, produce and direct. Subsequentlyhe began work directing Spy Kids with the intention of doing Madmanafter that. That movie proved such a success, that the studio went immediatelyforward with Spy Kids 2, thereby delaying the comic flick.
That brings usto the bad news: Rodriguez now plans to make Spy Kids 3 before beginningwork on Madman. However, Allred remains optimistic and saysRodriguez has been upfront about his various obligations.
"Confidenceis high. It is odd that he will have done four films in the interim," thecomic creator said, referring the director's Once Upon a Time in Mexico,the third picture in his El Mariachi saga.
Allred alsoreminds us that Rodriguez is the producer of Madman and has beenrenewing the option on the project out of his own pocket, in spite of of offersfrom studios to back the film. "He obviously thinks enough of it tokeep optioning it."
Spy Kids 2is due in theaters this summer.
