By Rob M. Worley     December 31, 2002

Witchblade actorAnthony Cistaro announced that his comedy mini-festival, "Smash Comedy Hits from the Canadian Fringe", produced by Story Syndicate,Inc., will run in Los Angeles in January. The show brings Canadian Fringecomedy acts to Hollywood theater goers.

Cistaro is best known toreaders of this site for his portrayal of the villainuos Kenneth Irons on Witchblade,be he has a long resume in TV acting. He's had recurring roles on Cheers(as Henri, Sam & Woody's French nemesis), and guest starred on Angel,Seinfeld, and The Nanny, among many other shows. ButCistaro, a theatre-trained actor (Harvard's American Repertory TheatreInstitute, the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts), has also returnedagain and again to theatre.

During his stint with Witchbladein Toronto Cistaro became a fan of the riotous Toronto Fringe Theatre scene. Theresult? His producer side kicked in, and Anthony Cistaro's "StorySyndicate, Inc." is bringing a mini-festival of hit Canadian comedy to theStella Adler Theatre, opening January 17, 2003. Says Cistaro, "These showswere so much fun when I first saw them, that I wanted to jump up on stage andjoin the performers-and in the case of Tale of the Scorpion, that's exactly what I'll be doing."

Featured for all five weeks of the festival will be Adrian Truss's hilarioustake on pulp fiction, Tale of the Scorpion. Canada's Eye Magazinedescribes Tale of the Scorpion as "a ridiculously funnyscript, full of ridiculously funny characters." Can writer Lester Kentpossibly turn out three separate pulp fiction novels in less than a week-whilebeing harassed by characters from all of them? Find out in Tale of the Scorpion!

Also part of the line up are:

  • January 17-26: Alex Dallas and her one-woman show, Nymphomania, a rude, raunchy, funny and poignant look at men, sex, birth and death. Dallas, acclaimed for her previous show, Goddess, sold out her 2002 Canadian tour of Nymphomania, which is directed by Second City alum Carolyn Hay.
  • January 31-February 9: OK, they're originally from Albuquerque, but Mark Chavez and Shenoah Allen, who make up "burning cities new works co.," have found fame in Canada with Sabotage, called "a whirlwind of cracked comedy that leaves you laughing while wondering exactly what it was you saw."
  • February 14-16: For the festival's final week, David Huband, Bruce Hunter, Adrian Truss, the Illustrated Men, will show Los Angeles why they have been Canadian comedy favorites since 1984. Their social satire combines both improvised and written material into an absurd comic universe. "Defies printed description!" claims the Toronto Star. "Suggests Siamese triplets joined at the psyche."

"I want to share Canada'svibrant theatre scene with Los Angeles audiences," says Cistaro, "andI plan on making this Canadian Theatre Festival an annual event."
