Black Confirms IRON MAN 3 Job

Shane Black confirms he's meeting with Downey for Iron Man 3.

A month after rumors appeared online suggesting that Shane Black was coming on board to write and direct Iron Man 3, the Kiss Kiss Bang Bang director has confirmed to fans he intends to reunite with lead star Robert Downey Jr. in the effort. Despite no official announcements of his involvement out of Marvel Studios nor Paramount Pictures, AICN reports that Black appeared at the Omaha Film Festival and answered the question as to his participation.

His answer to the fan was that he was meeting with Downey Jr. later this week and that the actor would be contributing to the story that Black has been set to write. The writer-director also confirmed that unlike last year's sequel, this third installment will have less of the superhero element and even less of two iron-clad players battling each other.

"Iron Man 3 will not be another 'two men in iron suits fighting each other' film. Instead, it will be more like a Tom Clancy-thriller, with Iron Man fighting real world villians."

There you have it, Maniacs. Black seems to be sure he has the job for writing and directing this third "Iron" adventure and already has a story in mind for the Marvel hero.

With Iron Man 3 set aside for a May 3, 2013 release, there's still some time for Marvel, Paramount and Black to develop the production.

Thanks to Calibur454 for the submission.

"this third installment will have less of the superhero element and even less of two iron-clad players battling each other. "

Am I the only one who sees a problem with that quote? Isnt this a superhero movie?

as long as the techno geek stuff doesnt overwhelm the story I'm in for this I am a clancy fan and sometimes his technical knowledge that is woven into the stories- though at most times necessary- can bog the story down. I think a tribute line for the writer would be pretty cool if that is the case. Black on Iron man with Downey on board is a strong plus

WTF!!!  No Manderin.  I was exited for Shane Black but now I'm Worried.  Manderin is the perfect villian for the Third film.  I dont see how he will fit in his proposed 'real world villians' angle.  Here's hoping he means the rings will be alien artifacts and not magic.

An Iron Man movie without the Mandarin would be nothing short of an atrocity. Plain and simple.

WTF?!!  What is up.  Going away from the SUPER HERO element (It is a Super Hero Story) will ruin, destroy, (choose your own adjetive) a great franchise.

Stop trying to re-invent.  The target fan base, generally, are not looking for more real world stuff at the movies, I have enough negative real world shiot in my everyday life, I don't want to pay money to go watch it on a movie screen.  Give me action, mayhem, gratuitus violence, blood, special fx, fantasy etc.

If your making a super hero movie, make a super hero movie.  A real super hero will have no problem with real world villans.

Uhh, guys....Chris Nolan kinda used that same basic concept for his Batman films, and they turned out okay.

I, for one, will be gravely disappointed if I don't see the Mandarin.  China is a bigger player now than ever.  They can modernize the character in so many interesting ways.

I felt a little jilted because we didn't see the Crimson Dynamo or Titanium Man in the second installment.

Easy you guys dont forget about the madrian's history and origin. They may stretch it out a little and change it to fit the movie. He may be financing the bad guys that strak has to deal with ending in an unexpected encounter and fight sceen insues with them both at the end.

This is doable with the mandrian aa the underworld shadow figure

My first thought was, "YYYEEEEEEAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!"

Iron Man 2 had little to no plot.  Why do we need two Iron Men?  Why War Machine?  It was all fighting and very little character development.

I would like to see the film Black has in mind.  Don't worry, it isn't going to be one of those things where the hero only pops on the costume for the last ten seconds to save the day.  I think he's simply saying that it won't as much or more focused on problem solving and character development as it will be on fighting and action.

Well, if you read between the lines, he did say it wouldn't be two men IN IRON SUITS fighting each other.
And iirc, the Mandarin doesn't wear an iron suit.

Also said he would be battling "real world villians" and in the first IM we were given a glimpse of the ten rings as being a terrorist organization, so it could play well into that storyline.

Hopefully by it not being a "super hero story" he means that it won't focus on the technology and over the top scenes so much as the technology being an asset in getting the job done.
Or perhaps he means that it won't be like a traditional super hero film sequel where half the film is spent focusing on the villian and building him up (like IM2).
It would be nice for the villian to be revealed through a slow build like in the first film.
That one seemed much more "realistic" to me than the second.
