Watchmen may not hit theaters for 12 more months but we know one feature which will be appearing in the DVD release of the Zack Snyder film. Thespian Gerard Butler has confirmed to Empire Online that he will indeed be voicing the character of the captain in "Tales of the Black Freighter", a new animated feature based on the tale within a tale concept inside the graphic novel by Alan Moore. There were rumors of the mini-tale last October but Snyder said it wouldn't appear in the theatrical version because of time restraints.

The comic-within-a-comic tells the tale of a castaway's mental and physical deterioration and damnation as he tries to intercept a ghost freighter headed for his hometown.

"I'm going to do the voice of the captain," said Butler. "They're going to do it in the style of a Japanese anime and I'm totally stoked.

Plot Summary: A complex, multi-layered mystery adventure, "Watchmen" is set in an alternate 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society, and the "Doomsday Clock" - which charts the USA's tension with the Soviet Union - is permanently set at five minutes to midnight. When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the washed-up but no less determined masked vigilante Rorschach sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As he reconnects with his former crime-fighting legion - a ragtag group of retired superheroes, only one of whom has true powers - Rorschach glimpses a wide-ranging and disturbing conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future. Their mission is to watch over humanity...but who is watching the watchmen?

Watchmen will hit theaters March 6, 2009.

"They're going to do it in the style of a Japanese anime..."

What? It was in the style of an old EC comic in the book. What the hell is up with Japanese anime? Good grief.

As psyched as I am for this film and that particular extra I gotta agree bernini. What's up with that?
And no - Watchmen is not over hyped or boring.

Agreed, Bernimi - I am concerned that Mr. Snyder may have missed the entire point....

Personally I hated that part of Watchmen but as long as they don't actually add it to the movie and only make it one of those stupid side bar extras that we never watch anyways, what's the harm.

I still think Snyder should do Escape From New York remake, he's friends with Butler who I'm sure would be back on board if this happened. Just my humble opinion.

I have to agree with Hobbs on this one. If it is an Extra on the DVD (a mini-movie as it were) I think it could be really really cool. Within the movie, if they address it at all it needs to be comic book (old EC style) flashes of a page the kid is reading (at most), perhaps a little narration of the story with the page (assuming Snyder used it).

I have the feeling that this is more Butler not really knowing what he's talking about rather than it actually being done anime style. I mean, why would Snyder insist on being faithful to the original source on everything but the animated short? It doesn't make sense.
