Black Panther Getting Animated

By: Stephen Lackey
Date: Monday, April 21, 2008

BET just held its upfronts announcing its 2008-2009 shows and there’s one for the comic book fans! The Marvel Comics character Black Panther will be getting his own animated series for the network. Black Panther has never been a major character in the Marvel U, but he’s consistently been around either in his own book, via guest appearances in Fantastic Four , where he got his start, or as an Avenger.

There have been several efforts to bring the character to the big screen including an attempt by Wesley Snipes who wanted to play the character. Marvel even recently announced that a film for the character was on their slate of upcoming projects. Just because he’s getting animated doesn’t mean he won’t appear on the big screen though. How many Spider Man series have their been? Ten years ago, Wesley Snipes would have been perfect in the role. The series is slated to premiere early next year.

All the great shows this week are happening on two nights, Thursday and Friday. The most important of them being the return of Lost. There’s a lot more though; Supernatural is new, as well as Battlestar Galactica. Smallville, Medium, Doctor Who, and The Sarah Jane Adventures are also worth noting.

Damn, there is so much going on this week! Awesome! I know alot of people here don`t like Smallville but last weeks episode was pretty damn good, so hopefully it will finish the season off strong. The new episodes of Doctor Who are pretty good so far. Nothing too major going on but its still quality. Can`t wait for Supernatural and Moonlight is a guilty pleasure. BSG, well last episode told me alot about these new Cylons and even more about the old ones. They are just as screwed up as humans.
Good news about Black Panther, although I don`t see why it has to be on BET. Are you telling me, that a cartoon like that wouldn`t do just as well on another channel?

EvilMonkey • Apr 21, 2008, 04:00am •
I don't think it has to be on BET but rather it's the one BET wanted to do.

(W00T we can edit messages again)

yeah black panther on bet is practically racist as if an african superhero wouldn't do good on another channel if that makes sense to anyone, yeah new smallville but it will probably be another in long history of slow paced eps with few new developments. no mention of the new reaper on this tuesday what's up with that or is it next week?

karas1 • Apr 21, 2008, 04:29am •
Well, if BET was going to do a superhero show it's obvious that they would pick a black one. It IS the African American Channel after all. Why would they be interested in doing a show about a caucasion hero? Which is not to say that a show about Black Panther or any other black hero wouldn't do well on another channel.

And why can't we do paragraphs? The text is all smooshed together. Please fix that.

I hate the fact that Black Panther is going to Bet. Couldn't CN or KidsWB pick this up. I only say this because the show is going to get lost on Bet, I don't know many people that watch this channel, including my black friends, hell they watch the same crap most of America watches..........pony, you're right about Smallville, it has gotten better. I love the fact that Lex has finally accepted who he is and the way he quieted his conscience, I was practically rooting for him to do it........... I have a feeling the new cylons' problems is that they feel too much, perhaps they were too close to resembling humans for their comfort. Still dying to see who is the last cylon. I'm not convinced it's Starbuck

ponyboy76 • Apr 21, 2008, 06:31am •
Yeah, I don`t think that its Starbuck either. I know she said all that stuff about not feeling like she is living her life but to me, its too obvious. Moore is going out of his way to make it out like she is the 5th but I think it will end up being someone we don`t expect at all. I`m glad that they flushed Callie. She was a good character in the beginning but after awhile she started to annoy me. I keep forgetting her name but she is pretty psycho. I think you might be right about these cylons being too emotional, which is why they were kept hidden. The ironic thing is, the Cylons aren`t really acting any different.
That shot at the end of Smallville with Clark on one end and Lex on the other in the cemetery was just cool. I still say despite all the negatives about Smallville the show, this version of Lex Luthor best represents the source material Lex and how truly evil he is and can be.
Wiseguy, you are also right about BET, because there are only like 1 or 2 shows if that much I ever watched on the channel. I hope it gets picked up on another channel, eventually. I would just hope that they would want a larger more mainstream audience. I know its not only black people that watch BET, but still.

Laura Rosylin is the last Cylon...Nah, well maybe. I can't decide. I used to think she was, but then Tory became (was revealed as) a cylon, so it would be better for Pres. Rosalyn to feel uber betrayed by her top aide. Starbuck is definitely NOT the last cylon. Who the frack is it!!! what an awesome show. I don't think it's a bad thing that BET is doing Black Panther, it's more appropriate to bust the other networks balls for NOT doing a black superhero cartoon. (The Blade TV show, and Mantis don't count) Sure they gave us Static Shock a while back, but I didn't know that character and didn't watch. Black anther I'd watch on any network. And I have a feeling they'll keep it more "real" on BET. (even though their CEO and founder, just dissed my boy Barrack last week)

rgtchtiger • Apr 21, 2008, 11:03am •
I made a prediction regarding the last Cylon a couple months back and figure it's worth repeating here. My Prediction Sure To Go Wrong: I think the last Cylon is Tom Zarek. He wanted to be President shortly after Roslin took office and has fought her policies up until becoming VP. He also aided Baltar in his campaign to run for President, and now is sitting pretty as VP since he has the President's ear. I think it makes a lot of logical and dramatic sense for the Cylons to have an inside toaster from a political side, but having Roslin be the last Cylon would be too odd, especially since she has cancer. How could the toasters fake those types of symptoms in a clone anyway? I'm open to anyone else's thoughts.

Yes, could we please get paragraph breaks and article titles on the main page!!! I had to click on 5 different articles I cared nothing about until I found the TV Wasteland!!!

And, Lex burning his inner child, or innocence was brilliant!
