What They Say
Shikimi does his best to reassure the villagers, but they cannot resist their madness and fear. With everything he's worked for falling down around him, Shikimi turns to his mysterious captive for answers. Shikimi, at least, is beyond saving... but what about those he loves?

The Review
With the village now isolated and more people becoming sick by the day, Shikimi is stretched to his limit trying to treat his growing number of patients. Despite his best efforts, nobody really seems to be getting better. The townsfolk were already a suspicious bunch, so when they went looking for a scapegoat the unconscious man was an easy target. Shikimi attempted to protect him, when an unexpected person deflected their suspicions to a new target - the blond, and therefore different, Amaria.

Somehow, Shikimi's world has broken apart, and all he holds dear is on the verge of being lost to him as the villagers go crazy. When he discovers the truth behind the mysterious illness, it's almost more than he can bear. Grey explains the truth behind it all, and that truth drives Shikimi to the brink and beyond.

With the secret of Shikimi's past and mysterious transformation exposed, this volume was like a kick in the teeth in a good way. It was suspenseful, brutal, and utterly entrancing - once I started it, I couldn't put it down until it was done, and then I had to reread the whole thing again. The series started out kind of slow and goofy, but has slowly evolved into something else entirely. The wait for the next volume to find out what happens with Shikimi's bet now that his past has been revealed is going to be a killer one.
