Teri Hatcher coming to SMALLVILLE

Speaking of Smallville season ten, Michael Ausiello of reports that former Lois Lane Teri Hatcher is set to appear on the show. She'll be playing current Lois Lane Erica Durance's mother.

Fans will likely recall that Hatcher rose to fame starring in the much-liked Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.

Apparently it's established that Lois' mother Ella is dead, but in episode eight of the new season, called "Abandoned", Durance's character will discover some lost videotape of mom.

Millar Not Bothered by lack of WANTED 2

It's been tricky tracking the up-and-down status of the sequel to Timur Bekmambetov's modest action hit Wanted, based on the comics by Mark Millar.

After the box office receipts of the original, a sequel seemed like a sure thing that would go into production this year. Plans called for Angelina Jolie returning to the role of Fox, in spite of the fact that she was killed at the end of the first movie. Then, February stories indicated that Jolie would not do the movie and Universal was pulling the plug on it. This was followed by a series of comments by Mark Millar insisting that the movie was full-speed ahead and the script was being reworked to deal with Jolie's departure. There was a smattering of casting rumors indicating that Kristen Stewart would take the new female lead role.

And since then, it's been pretty quiet.

Now, Millar tells MTV Splash Page that he's not sure what's going on either.

"Wanted 2 is complicated," Millar told MTV News. "There’s no book [for] Wanted 2. I would like to do [the movie]. I say if it happens, great. If it doesn’t, I’m not bothered."

While Millar admits he's been advised many times to cash in by putting out more Wanted comics, it seems he feels complete with the one mini-series as it is.

"But I don’t really write the comics for money, I write them comics because I like them," Millar said. "Sometimes I do things for almost no money at all just because I like doing it, so the idea to write a sequel just because the movie was big seems almost unethical."

As far as the sequel movie goes he said it would be premature to talk about casting rumors.

"I think there had been some conversations [with Kristen Stewart] but there isn’t even a finalized screenplay yet so they definitely can’t confirm any actors yet," Millar said. "I have heard that she was approached and she said that she was very excited about the idea in an interview...of working with guys like James [McAvoy] or [director Timur Bekmambetov] or whoever but it’s all just speculation."

McAvoy is currently busy promoting The Conspirator and filming X-Men: First Class.

David Slade Confirms Jackman Meeting For WOLVERINE 2

Well, X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2 is supposedly going into production by year's end, but we're still wondering who the director will be. One of the top contenders is said to be David Slade of Hard Candy, 30 Days of Night and Twilight: Eclipse fame.

In a conversation with the Vancouver Sun, Slade confirms that he's circling the sequel project.

"I can say that I've met with Hugh Jackman and he is a very nice fellow, but you never know with these things," Slade said. "There are several projects I'm interested in now, and that's one of them."

RED director Robert Schwentke was also eying the job, but passed over it to take on Universal's R.I.P.D. Auteur Darren Aronofsky, who collaborated with Jackman on The Fountain  is also rumored to be a contender. His new movie Black Swan is opening soon to critical praise.

Fellow Maniac Samson attended one of the two world premiere theatrical screenings of Superman/Batman: Apocalypse last night.and provided us with a review of the film as well as some info about upcoming DC Universe animated movies, revealed in the post-screening Q & A.

Hey Guys,

I was at the world premiere of Superman/Batman: Apocalypse in Beverly Hills last night. The movie was a lot of fun with tons of great action. If Superman Returns would’ve been like this, action wise, Brandon Routh would likely be suiting up for a third Superman film by now.

With that said, there were some missteps. Andre Braugher’s Apocalypse lacked the vocal heft we’ve come to expect from the character. He just sounds like some random guy with a kind of deep voice. Not the ominous destroyer of worlds we’ve come to know and love.

There were some unexpected moments of comedy. And the best lines of humor were delivered by, and you may be as surprised as I was, Batman. Don’t get me wrong, he was as grim, dark and pessimistic as ever. But, that's why it worked. He’d state things things that we, as the viewing audience, would say in the highly unlikely event we were tasked with battling Apocalypse. In that regard, he stole the show.

Now, I haven’t read the comics that the movie is based on. So, I can’t tell you how it stacks up against Jeph Loeb’s work. But, in my opinion, it’s better than the Superman/Batman: Public Enemies cartoon and every bit as enjoyable as Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths. Albeit, Crisis was better written and felt more like a feature film in it’s tone because of it.

Afterward, there was a 15 - 20 minute Q&A with Bruce Timm, Andrea Romano, Tim Daly, Lauren Montgomery, Tab Murphy, and Susan Eisenberg. We know that Timm was working on All Star Superman which he said is done and is really, really good. He’s also doing Batman: Year One and Green Lantern: Emerald Knights which will be like Gotham Knights. But, will feature Abin Sur, Sinestro and yes, Kiliwog. Each in his own segment with an over reaching story arch tying everything together. Kiliwog’s segment will be centered around his early days as a Green Lantern.

One more thing I found interesting. Lauen Montgomery, the movie’s director commented that the reason the DVD isn’t called Superman/Batman. Supergirl is because the Wonder Woman DVD didn’t sell as well as Warner Brothers had hoped. And the suits in charge now feel that a female super hero won’t sell DVD’s as well as a male hero. So, because of that, not only do we not have Supergirl in the title, but the image we have of her on the cover is her evil “slutty outfit” version. And, It is my understanding that the only reason they got her on the cover is because she looks “skanky” in that image.

Plus, even though Wonder Woman is as much a part of this story as Superman and Batman, she is nowhere to be found on the cover. Because, you know, seeing a female hero on a Superman/Batman DVD would prevent us from buying the DVD like a silver choker would prevent Eric from biting Sookie. Yuck ... girls ... cooties! Got to love “Suit Logic.”

Gotta run. Keep up the good work guys!

Mania contributor Bob Trate was at the East Coast screening as well and will have a full report for us soon.

BLACK WIDOW Solo Film in Discussion

During a virtual press conference promoting the discussing the Iron Man 2 DVD, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige said that one of the movie's characters is poised for a spin-off.

"We've already started discussions with [actress Scarlett Johansson] about the idea of a solo [Black Widow] movie and have begun putting together concepts but The Avengers comes first," Feige told journalists.

The announcement is not particularly surprising. Marvel has made attempts at a Black Widow feature several times in the past. A low budget feature was part of a the ill-fated Artisan package some ten years back. That was a development deal between Marvel and Artisan which gave the mini-studio the option to develop ten low-budget movies based on Marvel characters. Artisan was eventually sold to Lionsgate and the only movie to be developed from the package was Thomas Jane's Punisher film.

Later Marvel continued to develop the project with David Hayter attached to write and direct for a 2006 release. Rebecca Romijn was rumored to be attached to star.

Of course Scarlett Johansson has pulled off the role in a small capacity in Iron Man 2 and will reprise the character in The Avengers. A solo outing makes sense to C2F as it would give Marvel a nice international spy franchise, although there's been talk of a Nick Fury/S.H.I.E.L.D. movie as well.

Look for Black Widow on the Iron Man 2 DVD and Blu-Ray release next week, and in The Avengers in 2012.

Well... more Scarlett would be very easy on the eyes and they did show in IM2 that she can kick some butt.

wessmith1966 9/23/2010 7:34:13 AM

I don't think a solo Black Widow movie is a good idea unless there would be a good mix of other Marvel characters involved. I don't think Scarlett is enough of a draw to headline her own movie. Marvel needs to be really careful not to put out a movie that's going to set them back at all. Luckily, last year's Punisher movie didn't do any damage to Marvel's momentum because it kind of slid in under the radar. I'd much rather see an Agents of Shield movie starring Black Widow, Hawkeye, Nick Fury and Agent Coulson with cameos from other marvel universe characters.

Teri hatcher playing Lois' mom is great geek casting! I'm glad she's doing it. It seems like the Smallville producers are pulling out all the stops for the last season.

Calibur454 9/23/2010 7:43:28 AM

why would you do a black widow film. I guess anything to cash in for a buck- come on marvel this is a movie that is destined for RASSIE greatness. Maybe even beating out Catwoman

Wanted 2- I guess millar is finally admitting to taking on more than he can chew. A sequel to a comic book with no comic books attached just wouldn't work and I think he has figured that out.

Wiseguy 9/23/2010 7:49:24 AM

I like how Smallville is giving these actors previously involved with Superman some props. How about a role for Tim Daly

Although I get tire of Millar's yapping I must say that he earned a bit of respect for not writing a Wanted sequel just for the cash. Of course I'm sure he's getting paid either way so it isn't like he's totally missing out plus he's been writing a lot of stuff with eyes on the big screen as the ultimate goal

I'm good if they go with Slade for Wolverine. I like most of his works

Kudos Samsom, nice job on that report

Have we ever had a succesful female superhero movie, I don't think so. How do you do Black Widow, on a small budget to hedge your bets or big scale to include other superheroes to help make it a big attraction? I don't know but history doesn't bode well for this solo project IMO

jfdavis 9/23/2010 7:50:00 AM

There may be a connection between the reason Supergirl isn't mentioned in the title of Apocalypse and why Elektra and Catwoman bombed.  Girls/Women being interested in sports is a relatively new phenomenon after all... There are female Maniacs on this site but I have never read comments by them for this column... I should point out my mother used to read Antman comics back in the '60's and I do know a few female, mostly X-men, comic fans...

Keeping all that in mind, I have my doubts about a Black Widow film.  She has no rogues gallery so she either would fight a Captain America villian (I would love a face off with Omega Red but that won't happen...) or the movie would be a knock-off of Alias or Nikita.  Or my books for that mater... ;-)

LocoLobo73 9/23/2010 8:00:39 AM

Ok so I know its been a while but , i wanted to throw this out there, is Marvel nuts, I like on the same page as this, DC states the DVDs with women superheros in the title dont sell, Cause they dont, I personally loved the Wonder Woman dvd, it was well done, like pretty much everything that DC's animated divison is doing. Like Marvel rules the silver screen rignt now , DC absolutely rules the animated side. But i regress The Black Widow movie has failure written all over it, put the character on a Tv series, and I think your ok, but the silver screen is a bad idea, i agree with Smith up there, An  AGent of Shield Movie has a better shot. Roll the Nick Fury movie, the Black Widow Movie and , the Hawkeye movie all together and and have them take on Barron Strucker and Hydra with Lady Viper and you have the makings of a good flick. Tie in the three main charcters orgins, using flash backs, in there and wham bam thank you Scarlett !! Maggie Q as lady Viper, Christopher Waltz as Strucker , hell yeah, sprinkle in Maria Hill, Agent Coulson and the Howling Commandos from Captain America and bring us an airbattle with, Hellicarriers and flying cars and im in.

That's cool about Teri Hatcher playing Erica Durance's mom.  I just wish I knew where families like that lived in the real world, as I might have to move there.  One rebuttal to the column... Ms. Hatcher actually rose to fame on MacGyver in this Maniac's eyes.  :)

Black Widow, bring it on.  No way it can be as bad as Catwoman.   After all, they already have been more faithful to that character than they ever even thought about for Halle Berry's alter ego.  (Thanks for conjuring up those awful memories for me, Calibur454!)

wessmith1966 9/23/2010 9:15:38 AM

If Wolverine 2 is going to deal with Logan's time in Japan I want to throw this director's name out there...Edward Zwick. He's an excellent director and writer. Watch the movie "The Last Samurai" and tell me he wouldn't be a great director for Wolverine 2. Put Hugh in Tom's place in the movie, add some claws and Silver Samurai and you could have a great Wolverine movie; not just a financially successful one.

violator14 9/23/2010 9:18:04 AM
