You guys should check out the book Tales From The Script.  It's a couple of Hollywood screenwriters talking about business and what not.  Anyway, one of the screenwriters is David Hayter and he talks about his take for Black Widow and why it didn't happen.  His daughter was born during the time he was writing it and he was so into the Black Widow he named his daughter Natasha.

Ha Ha Ha. Figured Marvel would jump the shark... Again. This is what happens when kyke studio execs and a rising young ego manic actress think they can milk a little extra money and fame from something elses' fame.

I don't understand all this hostility towards the notion of a Black Widow film at all.  Most of the reasons you guys have given are absurd..  Catwoman, Birds of Prey and Elektra didn't fail because they featured female superheroes.  They failed because the scripts were crap, and completely ignored everything that made the characters work in the comics.

Nobody likes stories with kick-ass females?  How about Kill Bill volumes I & II?  Isn't the current Resident Evil movie the fourth one in that series?  Underworld has had three movies.  Both Charlie's Angels movies were horrible, but they still made plenty of money at the box office.  Witchblade only got cancelled because the star was an alcoholic who had to go to rehab.  Two Tomb Raider films, seven seasons of Buffy, six seasons of Xena, five seasons of Alias, three seasons of Wonder Woman, two seasons of Dark Angel (nobody can survive a schedule switch Friday nights on Fox).

Seems to me that there's plenty of room out there for female superheroes.

Oh, and Muenster- Racial slurs do nothing but pronounce to the world what an idiot the person using them is.  Thanks for letting us all know just what sort of person you really are.

@Wyldstaar- I'm sorry if I gave the impression that I felt the reason BW would fail was because she was a woman who kicked ass.  My point was that female superheroes don't work for audiences.  She can kick ass but she can't do superhero comicbooky things while she's doing it.   Of the examples you gave that worked only Wonder Woman is a costumed hero.  And most of your examples were TV where the issue isn't as large.  WW stil does not have a movie...

Personally, I'd rather see a sequel to Push than Wanted.  I liked Push a lot more.

Wiseguy, I'd argue that yes in fact there has been a successful Super-heroine movie... Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2.  Granted those weren't based off of existing comics, but the feel was the same... hell Bill even goes on to explain that Beatrix Kiddo is Superman.

Wiseguy 9/24/2010 7:18:44 AM

goldeneyez and wyldstar make good points on females being able to carry their own movies but the fact is that a female superhero movie has yet to succeed and more specifically one based on a popular comic book. I don't think it's impossible that one could succeed with the proper story, script, cast, etc etc but it hasn't happened yet. We can argue semantics all day long but Beatrix Kiddo, Selene, Lara Croft nor Alice are considered "superheroes" nor based on comic books which I think is the broader view I think.

Another reason the aforementioned also succeeded IMO is that they were rated R, violent and bloody, which if they had done Elektra correctly might have succeeded. But the fact remains that DC and Marvel are too reluctant about going the R route. Nothing like a hot female spilling some blood

I think there's a reason why most female led comic books don't last or have problems staying afloat unless they're the "mature" type (bloody, violent, sexy, something taboo or all of them at once)

Why they want a woman solo comic movie is beyond me.  There are no great comic stories around her.  They have to make up something from scratch, flop for sure.  Black widow might be better as a tv series on HMO with boobies and cussing and other adult fun stuff.  But for a summer movie no way.

Wyldstaar 9/25/2010 9:29:17 AM

Very true on Elektra, Wiseguy.  In the opening scene of Elektra, it looked as though it was going to be an awesome movie.  We got the real Elektra from the comics in all her ass kicking glory.  Sadly, she immediately disappeared and was replaced by Sydney Bristow for the remainder of the flick.

Truth be told, the main reason I made my argument is that so many others were taking up the opposing view.  I meant everything I said, but I don't feel all that strongly on the matter.  The fact is that I don't really want a solo Black Widow film either.  I think she would be great alongside Nick Fury, Hawkeye, Agent 13 (aka: Sharon Carter) and Agent Coleson in an Agents of SHIELD movie, though.
