this book was so good, I can't even put into words how much I liked it. I'l just kiss it and cudle with it instead.

Geoff Johns follows up one of the best single issues of a monthly book that Chris Smits has read in a long time with the kick-off to the biggest event of the summer. And it is, as they say, “a doozy.”
As Americans pay their respects to the super-beings who have given their lives protecting the world, a cloud of black rings spreads through the universe like a swarm of flies. Superheroes and villains alike are tipping their hats and laying flowers on the graves of fallen comrades… but they aren’t quite so fallen anymore. You’ve seen the advertisements: you know what it’s about. I don’t need to give you any more set-up. This is what you’ve been waiting for.
First of all, it’s 40 for $3.99. In an age when more and more 22-page books are selling for 4 bucks and a few 30-pagers are going for the same rate, it’s nice to get an almost double-sized issue for only a dollar more.
There seem to be about a million stories going on here but it flows very nicely and never gets confusing. And it plays well on both sides of the fence – if you’re a Green Lantern fan, it’s an awesome Green Lantern event. And if you follow the DCU as a whole, this one’s gonna involve everybody. The same goes for its accessibility. Newcomers should have a fairly easy time just picking this issue up and understanding what’s going on and longtime fans will have a jawdroppingly good time with it.
And Ivan Reis’ pencils kick ass.
I don’t think I disliked anything.
It was as good of a first issue as I’ve read. Filled with lots of little tender moments between heroes (and even some villains), this issue offered a nice reflection on death from a comic book perspective. And it pieced together some storylines that have been simmering since Identity Crisis. I’m sure it wasn’t all planned out from way back then, but as usual Geoff Johns proves himself to be the King of the Quiet Retcon. The Sensei of the Soft Reboot, if you will. The man has taken the clay of the DCU and molded it into a masterpiece.
Books like this remind me why I read superhero comics and why crossovers and events can be a so much fun. I felt like a 7-year old kid again (though to be fair, part of that was the Black Lantern ring I got at the comic shop, which I’ve been wearing all day and using to reanimate dead squirrels in my backyard), which is what Johns really does best. Rather than get bogged down by continuity, he uses it as a cornerstone on which to build a great story – and even a universe.
It works so well because it doesn’t really feel like a crossover; it’s the natural progression of what has been going on in the Green Lantern books for the past few years. It works because it uses not only continuity but the community of heroes in the DCU as a cornerstone. You know and respect these people. They’ve saved your life and you’ve fought beside them. You get the full impact of just what’s going on here and it’s every bit as unsettling as it is awesome. It’s a damn good beginning to what will hopefully be the best story of the summer.
And it’s got creepy-ass intergalactic super-zombies, which is really freakin’ awesome. I give this issue an A and I’m dying for the next one.

Has anyone realized, this is in many ways Marvel Zombies? But, and a big, big ass of Darkseid butt here, done so incredibly better, and with more texture and finesse? And the end? It's not just about who has died that we see come back to rigamortis life, its who's GONNA DIE and THEN come back wielding a black ring!
I had that thought as I read it last night, It's a cool way to show DC Zombies.
BUUUUUUT Marvel Zombies was always meant to be tounge in cheek, not the serious event that this is. Two different animals. I dn't think they can be compared. This isn't done better than MZ, it's just an entirely different concept.
Geeze I just read it and damn! What a way to start fixin Hawks ! I'm lovin it already and definitely more for the buck hike which is an APPRECIATED gesture..
Think of the implication of this. For the Corps to see colleagues and loved ones come back as these ring powered monsters, nothing could destroy their will power more, and render them null. I am hoping for Hal Jordan's dad to come back and tell him what a disappointment he is, pushing Hal back to the Coast City break point!!!
And yet, the yellow lanterns can feed on the fear of the Black Lanterns and possibly become the heroes of the Universe. Hope has no choice but to follow fear. I am really excited about this! Screw the GL movie, lets get an HBO series and start with Jeff's jump on the series!
Gauley, you are right, but remember, the Zombies started in Ultimate Fantastic Four and was serious. It gave a scary alternate reality to that universe. When they got the new series, it got silly. I liked it, in a Cracked magazine sort of way, but this DC series is the real deal, and hitting the REAL reality of heroes. Too cool!
Awesome book!
I wasn't too crazy about Barry returning but I'm finally getting used to the idea. It seems to be working well with what's going in the DC universe with all the dead heroes returning. Certainly adds more emotional drama to Johns' book.
I can't wait to see how this one will turn out. Hal Jordan's Rogues seem to be getting more interesting and hopefully they will get the respect that Batman and Flash's rogues have.
Ahh, I forgot the MZ began in Ultimate FF. Good Point invisioner. Still I loved the first two runs of MZ.
BLASCKEST NIGHT BABY...definitely a better story than Secret Invasion, or Final Crisis.
It was good. A solid "A" and this much love is overstating things I'd say. It was waaaaay to wordy until the real fun stuff started. I mean, it took 8 months or so to get to this point. So on one hand these few extra pages wasn't so bad, on the other I was tapping my foot waiting for something to happen.
Hope the pace picks up like the end of this issue. It'll be DC's best crossover in many, many years.
Black Lantern Ch'p for the win. I can't wait to see Black Lantern Pa Kent as well (you know he's coming).
I felt like a 7-year old kid again
I couldn't agree more. I haven't been this excited for an event since I don't know when.
You know Hal and Barry (and all the heros) are going to shine as true heroes in Johns hands. I also suspect that Geoff is going to quietly fix the muddled history / versions of the Hawks once and for all.
I liked how the Black Lanterns can still use their powers and retain their personality quirks (though in a darker light). I also like that they can see which color of the emotional spectrum the people they face are attuned to.
