Sam’s second trial

***Spoliers***

It’s once again time to check in with the Prophet, Kevin Tran, but things aren’t going so well.  While Kevin has been able to translate the next trial from the demon tablet, Kevin’s paranoia is getting the better of him.  He’s hearing Crowley in his head and despite Sam and Dean’s assurances of his safety, Kevin takes to locking himself away in a small room aboard his ship.

The second trial involves Sam having to enter into Hell to rescue an innocent soul and release it into Heaven; just what the Winchesters need after their previous experiences in Hell.  But breaking into Hell is no easy chore.  They enlist the aid of a rogue Reaper to get them into a “backdoor” of Hell but to get there, Sam has to first go through Purgatory on his own.  But who is the soul he needs to rescue?  None other than Bobby Singer.  Unknown to the Winchesters, Crowley has prevented Bobby from going to Heaven, keeping his soul locked up and under constant torture.

While there was no sign of Castiel this week, who when we last saw him as absconding with the Angel tablet, Dean does have his first encounter with Naomi.  She tries her best to convince Dean that she is trying to help, but you know Dean, he has serious trust issues when it comes to angels.  When Crowley kills the Reaper who helped Sam into Hell, essentially leaving him with no way to get out of Purgatory, Dean has to call upon Benny the Vampire to help Sam make it out.  It’s evident from their meeting that Benny has no intention of returning leading to an emotional scene between the two.

Great way to get Bobby back into the mix, if even for one episode and it underscores the fact of just how powerful Crowley has become.  Despite the fact that Bobby should be in Heaven, Crowley is able to keep him trapped.  Bobby has always been a calming influence in the series and his presence has been missed.  Kevin disappears at the end and were left unsure of whether it really was Crowley or if Kevin finally snapped.  Either way he’s alone and in trouble.

Dean’s scene with Benny could have come off hokey but it didn’t.  We may never learn the truth but clearly the two formed a strong bond together in Purgatory and Dean is nearly overwhelmed with emotion at Benny’s sacrifice.

While Sams’ trip to Hell was short, it was punctuated with some gruesome scenes of tortured souls.  I have not mentioned it but Mark A. Sheppard continues to be outstanding as Crowley, the villain you love to hate.  He is so much more interesting and fun to watch than Lucifer was a few seasons back.  His snarkiness is eclipsed only by his pure evil.  This was an episode of emotional highs and lows…great to see Bobby back, sad to see Benny possibly go.

I really enjoyed this episode...really want to know what's going on with Kevin, and it was great to see Sam get Bobby out of hell.  Seems a little devicive that the ruler of hell has some say in which souls go there, but whatever.

This was a great episode.  My one annoyance was Kevin and his hiding the tablet.  If he gets caught of course he'll give it up.  Look at his mental state.  Benny's departure and Bobby's getting out of Hell were both pretty good.  I wish there was a touch more build up with Benny but what can you do.

I am really confused as to what Naomi's game is.  But all in all I agree with a B as the mark.
