Hungry for answers

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire arrives on Blu-ray

To begin with, I have only read two of three “The Hunger Games” novels by Suzanne Collins. I would think that many of you are probably in the same boat or haven’t read them at all. I have few questions, up to this point, and maybe you Maniacs can help me.

Let us start with the backstory. Does anyone else feel that it is not enough? Perhaps it comes from reading a lot of comics, or maybe even the Star Wars expanded universe, but this world doesn’t supply me with enough answers. I never felt that way about JK Rowling’s “Harry Potter” novels or films. Here, I need something else to go on. I know that it is a backdrop to the story at hand, but it drives me crazy when the characters speak about the uprising and rebellion with knowledge of events and I have nothing. Why was there a rebellion? Was their a plague that ravaged the land? The country is obviously the United States, but from where to where? How did the Capitol take control and why is everyone so terrified of these peacocks?

The first Hunger Games novel was a rich new world that revealed a society on the verge of chaos. Katniss Everdeen’s (Jennifer Lawrence) brave act was done out of love for a sibling. Yet, here in the sequel, that act has become a symbol of defiance; a rallying call for all the other rebels. Katniss has become a symbol of defiance and doesn’t wish to be one. It’s a great part to play, so why, as an audience member do I just wish that she would get killed and end my suffering? She constantly begs for death, yet, in the arena, fights to stay alive for a guy in the book she falls in love with. However, in the film, Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) is about as thrilling as the guy who played Steve in Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant. I care nothing for movie Peeta. If he did die, she could at least stop feeling so guilty about wanting to hook up with Thor’s real life brother, Liam Hemsworth.

The big hook at the end of this second movie is that look Katniss gives to the camera when she learns her district has been obliterated. We can see it in her eyes that now she is ready to fight. So many people I spoke with, who saw the film before me, were in awe of that scene. They couldn’t wait to watch it again and said the next one was too far away. It took me a while, but I understood how they felt when Smaug took flight at the end of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Yes, a year is too long to wait for the dragon. As for Katniss’s rage? Well there is that book that I can read in less time than it will take me to watch Mockingjay - Part1 and 2.

When the first Hunger Games film came out I was all for it. I read the book and went on opening day. The film got the story right, but missed out on all the details that fueled my imagination. The second book was a quick read that was full of details reminding us of the opulence of the Capitol and why the book is called “The Hunger Games”. So I am asking you, Maniacs, if I should read the third book and save my money or wait for the film? Are their answers that I seek (no spoilers please) in third book? Does anyone else think Divergent looks lame? Sound off below, Maniacs.I need to know!

Harry & the Hendersons?  I'm gonna have to look into getting that one!

I picked up digital copies of Oldboy & 12 Years A Slave.  Haven't seen Oldboy yet, 12 Years was good, not sure if it was Best Movie good but I haven't seen some of the other noms.

I liked the first HG, so can't wait to see the sequel.

Harry and the Hendersons was the bomb back in the day!  But I don't think I'll pick up the bluray anytime soon.  I have the DVD, and that's fine by me even if Rick Baker's Harry VFX was amazing!
