Frank Pavich's documentary only played to limited release when it opened early this past Spring. Naturally, it is easy to imagine how excited us sci-fi suckers are at the release of Jodorowsky's Dune on Blu-ray. The subject matter is instantly intriguing since even most fans don't know that their beloved Dune was almost a completely different movie. It is worth every penny to pick up a copy of this eye opening insight into one man's dream and inevitably doomed chance to realize it. Audiences are finally able to catch a glimpse of “the greatest science fiction movie never made”.
Immediately, we are sucked in as cult filmmaker, Alejandro Jodorowski (El Topo, The Holy Mountain), talks about his journey to turn sci-fi novel, Dune, into an epic masterpiece for the ages. It is both fascinating and sad to see how he invested so much of himself into the film's creation, only to have his vision ultimately rejected by Hollywood.
However, through Pavich's eyes, we are treated to treasure troves of animated storyboard art by Jean “Moebius” Giraud. We get to sit in on the late, great H.R. Giger (Alien Concept Designer) as he walks us through his original Dune concept art in what must be some of his final interviews. We astoundingly witness anecdotes of Gary Kurtz (producer of Star Wars), Chris Foss (Concept Artist for Alien), and Dan O'Bannon(writer of Alien) and marvel at the would-be cast of Orson Wells, Mick Jagger, David Carradine, and Salvador Dali! Our imaginations soar with spaceships made of watercolors and caves made of pencil sketches and we fantasize about 14 hours in a dark movie theater captivated in sci-fi nirvana.
But, the real treasure of the documentary lies in the intimate philosophies of Jodorowsky, himself. As eccentric (and some might say, mad) as he is, the elderly director's passion and enthusiasm for his art has endured decades of failure and will break your heart. The Blu-ray provides deleted interviews that prove Jodorowsky's vision is still clear as day in his own mind as he describes, in great detail, his favorite shots and sequences.
Honestly, there is so little in Hollywood that is this inspiring anymore. Jodorowsky's Dune is a soul cleansing experience to be cherished. If anything, it will make you hunger to see this version of Dune actually happen. Maybe, someday, it will.
