Blu-ray Shopping Bag: Son of Batman

Just read the comic

Son of Batman is DC Entertainment and Warner Bros Animation's next attempt after the surprisingly comic-faithful and successful Justice League: War.  However, as a fan of  the modern classic, Batman & Son, I was left unsatisfied and, upon a second viewing, shocked at the lack of common sense at not telling the original story...

Quite simply, the screenplay failed to deliver the same punch as Grant Morrison's comic, which was packed with jaw dropping character moments that lept off the pages.  Those of us who were watching and waiting for that epic Man Bat battle were sorely let down. Talia al Ghul is nothing more than a scared mother supplying the obligatory cleavage instead of  an ambitious  assassin bent on world domination, and oh yeah, no Joker. For time's sake, I won't list the rest of the omissions.  Director Ethan Spaulding (Aviaar:The Last Airbender) is clearly out of his element following Jay Olivia, who was on fire with his two installments of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, as well as Justice League:War (not to mention a few decent episodes of Young Justice). Frankly, this DC Animation movie ran more like an Anime flick.

When introducing a controversial character like Damien Wayne (Stuart Allan), the most important thing is to have him win over the audience. Shamefully, all his worthy character development in the comic was lost in the writing and voice acting in Son of Batman. Damien is simply a born killer who sounds like any other bratty American kid and his affection for Ra's al Ghul is not explained at all. Although the animation accurately delivers the character's appearance, the boy lacks the refine and worldly depth of his printed heritage.

I don't all together hate Jason O'Mara as the voice of the animated Batman. That being said (and as played out as this fanboy point is), the studio needs to just stop messing with our senses and let Kevin Conroy do his job. I mean, he's already filming Batman: Assault on Arkham, so why tease us? It is rare to find such an accidental perfect vocal match to such an iconic character. Those of us who have experienced the gift of Conroy's Batman are doomed to carry that standard in our heads forever. It's not that O'Mara does a bad job, it's that we all know there's better.

Oh, and if you're going to skip the Joker all together for the film version and put Deathstroke in...put DEATHSTROKE in! Though appealing, visually, and even well voiced by Thomas Gibson (Criminal Minds), you might as well forget everything you know about the super villain. He could have easily just been some one eyed homeless guy with a different name. Perhaps it would have been less disappointing.

On the other hand, Alfred's scenes were fantastic.

If Son of Batman didn't have so much potential, perhaps it would have been less of a letdown. DC Comics' Batman & Son was almost a cinematic art form in itself and, though not initially welcomed by fans, introduced a young character that would gain a fair amount of cult following. To change the story as much as the screenwriters did was the fatal mistake. Well, at least we have Assault on Arkham to look forward to.

So much stuff that I would like to buy this week.

The Universal Studios Comic Art steelbooks look nice, I'm hoping ot pick up the Bourne steels, and maybe King Kong.

Son of Batman has a steelbook exclusively at Target, not sure if I'll end up buying it or not.  That's too bad that you didn't enjoy it.

I did pick up Speed 2 on a Fox Connect sale a few weeks ago so I'll be getting that today.  Speed is also being rereleased today with a new slipcover which is nice.  Bought Weekend at Bernies and Guys Movie Pack which included Bachelor's Party, Porky's and Revenge of the Nerds.  All 4 of those movies are being released today as well.

Well I ended up going to Target and buy the Son of Batman steelbook.  Hopefully I enjoy it more than Trate did.

Also got in the mail today, Supernatural Anime. Anyone seen that?

God, hanso you are a real cinephile. Is there anything you don't like?  I'm sure I'm not half the movie fan you are, but I like a lot of movies too...lately, when I get the urge to watch an old classic I do a streaming rental on Amazon instant video or Vudu. I don't have room in my house to store all of those DVD's / Blu-Ray Disks.

I really liked Hitchcock's "Rear Window" with Jimmy Stewart (I've seen it many times)...that would be a Blu-Ray disk I'd consider buying (but probably won't).

All the Miami Vice TV series episodes have been available on DVD for years ..what's different about these new releases?

Is Kimberly McCall a new writer on Mania? I thought Trate used to write this column.

RobertTrate 5/6/2014 6:57:17 PM

She took it on for the Batman's piece. Tim Janson will follow it up with a review!

Blank, everyone here is a movie fan, you don't need to purchase anything for that, just that you enjoy movies :)  Besides, I'm sure you've seen more movies than I have, I don't watch a lot of old school stuff.

I tried to purchase the Hitchcock movies that released today but no stores had them available, they were all online.  Still debating if I'll purchase them from Best Buy or not since I've spent a lot $ recently on Disney 3D movies.

There is plenty of stuff I don't like but I try to see as many movies as I can.  I'm not a big fan of the horror genre though, so I'll miss a lot of the horror releases.

A few months ago I started to build my blu ray library (it's gone from around 90 to around 450 at the moment) after not buying as much for a few years.  Also been trying to move more towards digital since they take up less space, problem is my preferred format is iTunes and some studios aren't doing iTunes for whatever reason.

Universal reissued a lot of cataog titles (Hitchcock movies, American Pie, etc) today but those included UV/Digital copies or they were changing hte packing to steelbooks but I'm not sure what the difference is with Miami Vice DVDs.  I would imagine it's just the packaging.

Oh and all seasons dropped today even though Trate only listed 2 of the seasons.

Couldnt agree more with you about Konroy...he will always be the voice of great as The Dark Knight Returns was the only thing I would have wanted was to have Konroy back as the voice.  I wonder if anyone has any info on if they are heading to do the followup to that? The Dark Knight Strikes Again? It would have to be at least a two part series as well ...hell I'd buy it as a 3 part if it took that to get it right.
