Dave McNary over at Variety had a very decent article detailing what the studios have set for the horizon..Namely, 2009 and 2010 releases. I know what you're thinking...Isn't it kind of early to even think about those movies? I would agree with you but most studios are now in the mindset to prepare 3-4 years down the road especially in terms of some of their big name franchises.

Some studios are not afraid to list sequels to sequels that haven't even come out yet. MGM has BOND 23 set for a 2010 release when BOND 22 won't hit theaters till November 2008.  Disney has the 3rd NARNIA movie planned for a May 1st, 2009 date even before the sequel hits the market.

Other studios are playing it more tight to the vest. While New Line has a writer already attached to the sequel of THE GOLDEN COMPASS (based off the HIS DARK MATERIAL trilogy), they refuse to announce any plans for the sequel until they see what Compass does this December.

In point of fact, the 2009 high octane season for the studios is already filling up to the congestion rate as 2007 has been and 2008 is shaping up to be.

2009 Summer Scheduled:

Disney's NARNIA 3 (May 1, 2009)

James Cameron's 3-D AVATAR (Memorial Day 2009)

Dreamwork's 3-D MONSTERS VS ALIENS (Memorial Day 2009)

Disney's PRINCE OF PERSIA (July 10, 2009)

Pixar's UP (June 12, 2009)

Fox has ICE AGE 3 (July 1, 2009)

Warner Bros's SUPERMAN: MAN OF STEEL (Summer 2009)

Sony's GREEN HORNET

Warner Bros has WATCHMEN & JUSTICE LEAGUE

Universal has NOTTINGHAM

(These are just a few movies currently set for 2009 releases.)

2010 Summer Scheduled:

Sony has SPIDER-MAN 4

Warner Bros has HARRY POTTER & THE DEATHLY HALLOWS

Dreamworks has SHREK 4

(These are summer movies that those studios have planned so far.)

Hah. Let's not forget about the Summer 2008 Schedule. Much like 2007 has been, this is a summer of deep release congestion.

2008 Summer Scheduled:

May:

IRON MAN (May 2, 2008)

MADE OF HONOR (May 2, 2008)

THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (May 9, 2008)

INDIANA JONES IV (May 22, 2008)

FORGETTING SARAH MITCHELL (May 30, 2008)

(Note: Can May be even busier, Hollywood?)

June:

KUNG FU PANDA (June 6, 2008)

NIGHTS IN RODANTHE (June 6, 2008)

THE HAPPENING (June 13, 2008)

THE INCREDIBLE HULK (June 13, 2008)

(Note: I bet that changes, Maniacs. M. Night's first Rated R feature going against the HULK?)

GET SMART (June 20, 2008)

THE LOVE GURU (June 20, 2008)

Pixar's WALL-E (June 27, 2008)

WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS (June 27, 2008)

July:

JOHN HANCOCK (July 2, 2008)

KIT KITREDGE: AN AMERICAN GIRL MYSTERY (July 2, 2008)

THE MUMMY: CURSE OF THE DRAGON (July 11, 2008)

TROPIC THUNDER (July 11, 2008)

THE DARK KNIGHT (July 18, 2008)

MAMMA MIA! (July 18, 2008)

STEP BROTHERS (July 25, 2008)

August:

HELLBOY 2: THE GOLDEN ARMY (August 1, 2008)

SOUTH OF THE BORDER (August 1, 2008)

JOURNEY 3-D (August 8, 2008)

THE PINEAPPLE EXPRESS (August 8, 2008)

SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS (August 8, 2008)

(Note: These are just the "current" summer release schedules. Keep in mind more will be added. I know Fox wants WOLVERINE out by the Summer 2008 season. Let's skip to the fall/christmas season.)

November:

JAMES BOND 22 (November 7, 2008)

MADAGASCAR 2 (November 7, 2008)

(Note: Once again, I bet that changes. Why would they want to compete?)

THE WOLFMAN (November 14, 2008)

HARRY POTTER & THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE (November 21, 2008)

BOLT (November 26, 2008)

THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON (November 26, 2008)

December:

ANGELS & DEMONS (December 19, 2008)

REVOLUTIONARY ROAD (December 19, 2008)

THE TALE OF DESPEREAUX (December 19, 2008)

BEDTIME STORIES (December 25, 2008)

STAR TREK XI (December 25, 2008)

This is the future of Hollywood Cinema, Maniacs. Feel free to discuss what's on your minds in terms of the future set so far. Never forget that these are "known" movies and dates attached. There could still be future projects like more SAW films, Rodriguez's JETSONS or BARBARELLA or SIN CITY 2, more IRON MAN films, more BATMAN films, etc etc appearing on these years in the near future. 2009-2010 could also be getting TRANSFORMERS 2, DIE HARD 5 & FANTASTIC FOUR 3 depending on those studios. In fact, I'm surprised IRON MAN 2, another HULK movie and BATMAN 3 aren't already set for 2010 as of right now.

OH! The Humanity! Whatever happened to at least waiting to see what the FIRST movie does or if the AUDIENCE really wants
more? Anyone remember how the studio
that produced the ill-fated "Dune" in 1984
had made big plans for a franchise? No? I'm
not surprised.

well, IRON MAN could be another Elektra...
the last HULK disappointed... and maybe someone's waiting to see if the next batflick will end up like the Joel Schumacher ones?... bat-nipples, anyone?

I wouldn't be in a hurry to announce sequels for those...

Announce a few other SHREK, SPIDER-MAN, POTTER, SAW, ICE AGE, etc... and you know people will go see them...

I'm not suprised. If I ran a company like this I'd plan a few years ahead, when working with concepts that people are loving and spending money to see. And as for the GOLDEN COMPASS, since they don't already have a movie out, then of course they'd be more cautious.
Hell, they've turned out Bonds since the early sixties. Why wouldn't they think they could make another and another?

What about Godzilla 3-D?! That is the only release that truly matters.

I don't think they're waiting to make sure the Bat films don't turn out like the Shitmaker films. That happened because of a change in director. Nolan is still attached to TDK so they wouldn't expect a radical departure from anything good or logical. If they aren't planning a release date already, it's probably because contracts and such are being worked out for future sequels.

"What about Godzilla 3-D?! That is the only release that truly matters. "

It's going to be a 45 minute IMAX 3D movie, if and when it ever gets made, and it's going to be Godzilla in costume only as the producers are renting a suit from Toho. Toho has nothing to do with it at all.

You know we could all be dead, by 2010.
why the rush? ,especially 2009 & 2010?

Ya know, it really ISN'T too early to be thinking of '09 or '10. Films take time to write, then cast, then shoot, and, in the case of most of these big summer flick, they can take quite a while to do the FX. If you have a film that's going to take 18 months from concept to in-the-can, you have to start planning ahead. Look at that schedule for next summer...If I was a studio, I'd not want to try and shoehorn anything else in there, either. Since you can't go backwards on the calendar, then onward you go...
