In an article appearing in Entertainment Weekly this week, Pierce Brosnan says he learned that his :services" as James Bond would no longer be required.

"One phone call, that's all it took!" Brosnan told EW. The actor says, the producers had originally asked him back for a fifth Bond before the negotiations ended.

Brosnan describes his departure as a "titanic jolt to the system." But not long after, he realized he could now do whatever he wanted -- he was no longer tied to an image.

Brosnan was a decent Bond for the material they made him use. Connery was hands down the best ever. I made it my little quest to get all the bond films on DVD before Universal shut them down (even the Moore films, during which is the era I grew up in). Imagine my surprise, watching them in chronological order the sick man that I am, to see that even George L's outing was a good Bond film. Moore's got very silly, but he had a few good one's like The Man with the Golden Gun (I just love Christopher Lee) and For Your Eyes Only. Dalton had two good films, but horrible leading ladies... sorry they both sucked... and not in a good way. Brosnan had the charm and chrisma to do Bond, unfortunately he became Bond the Action Hero with implausible and unbelievable action sequences, vs. Bond the Spy with realistic situations and characters. Writing suffered greatly in the Brosnan era. The Bond films in recent years suffered from a lack of the spy mystique that came with the early films. Who's who and what's what became far too predictable. For example: Goldeneye: Back from the dead... really! (still the best of Brosnan's films) Tomorrow Never Dies: Great leading lady... horrible story and a complete waste of the use of Teri Hatcher. The World is Not Enough: Denise Richards looks great, but oh god why... Hey! This means the other chick is bad!!! A decent Bond flick. Die another Day: I smile evilly, therefore I am. Miranda Frost??? gee is she bad??? Haley Berry didn't get paid to show her breasts in this film. Most unbelievable Bond ever. I just wish that they had used Brosnan in a real Bond spy film... it could have been very good.

I agree with Ponyboy, the Bourne films are much more akin to early Bond then the Bond of today. Clive Owen, unfortunately has expressed no interest in playing Bond. Also, sad but true how you cannot have non-white villians today, then your a racist.

I loved all the bonds. They were all a little different. Although Dalton and Lazenby played it closer to the books than the other guys, Connery was and probably always will be my favorite. Every bond had stupid one liners. I'm just tired of the special effects and want the stories to get better. I'll always love bond movies, but they have spiraled down hill for years now, long before Dalton. And every actor has some good and some bad except Lazenby, who of course only had one, but I liked it. In fact I watched it the other night and got excited for Bond all over again.
