BOO! It's Halloween!

Around this time of year you start to see these lists crop up such as "Top 10 Scariest Movies of All Time!" or "10 Goriest Films Ever Made!" or some other such list. I was thinking about this the other night when I caught part of Bravo's rebroadcast of "The 100 Scariest Moments of All Time." If you haven't seen that special let me tell you way too many of their picks just seem really out of place on that list, but wait this isn't a review of that special. What I thought I'd do is just write a bit about a few scary moments in my movie going history and maybe you guys can do the same in the forum. They aren't in any particular order, other than one that I'll tell is easily the scariest.

My parents were a bit lax to say the least when it came to what movies they let me see at what age. So, I was pretty desensitized at a young, very young age. Also, I used to spend summers with my Grandmother who would take me to the video store and let me rent whatever I wanted. The movies that always made it to that tingly spot deep down inside me that made me leap from the entry way of my room directly into the bed when the lights went out were the ones that had a text crawl at the beginning or the end that led the audience to believe the film was based on a true story. Sometimes it was true, and other times it was just a great trick. Early in my movie going life I saw a film called THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN. This film was in fact based on a true story of a killer that terrified a small town in Texas at night. It's a low budget, fairly bloodless film, other than a disturbing sequence with a girl tied to a tree and a trombone with a knife attached to the end of the slide. What got me, and what stayed with me for years afterwards, was the text that crawled across the screen at the end of the film. The police had chased the killer into the woods and wounded him, but he got away, never to be seen again. Was he still alive out there, just waiting to kill again?

This next one is a bit more obvious. The first HALLOWEEN was the first film and the only film that made me actually leave a light on when I went to bed. Again a fairly bloodless film but very effective and again able to go out with a bang. When Michael was blasted out the window by the doctor there was gonna be no rising at the last minute for that one last stab, he was on the ground dead outside, so everything was safe, until the doctor looked out the window and he was gone. The follow up of the various shots of the quite neighborhood just hammered the terror home. Nothing scares me that way anymore, but I can still clearly remember how frightened I was at the time.

This one gets a little more risque. The first time I remember seeing a woman completely in the buff was when I saw THE SHINING in a theater. Being pretty young my reaction went from brain right to my mouth. When the lady turns in the shower completely naked I blurted out woo wee! Then a cut, and in the next scene she is covered with horrible looking sores. I let out quite a scream. I'm surprised I didn't get some kind of mental thing from that experience.

The final one happened in 1986: the year is essential to why I was scared out of my wits. I was watching the Charles Manson made for TV flick HELTER SKELTER. The film had been made in 1976 and it covered Charles Mansons exploits all the way through the trial and conviction. I found the whole thing disturbing but it wasn't really scaring me until the end. Instead of the text crawl I had learned to fear so much I got an epilogue from the actor that portrayed the prosecuting attorney. He shared some information about what happened after the conviction: the most affecting bit was when he said that Manson would reach his first opportunity for parole in 1986. I was freaked!

Do you see a pattern here? I've never really thought monster movies were scary. What has always terrified me, and disturbs me now is the evil that men can do. A movie like THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE gets to me more than something like THE HOWLING or some other modern monster movie. Obviously I'm a huge fan of the recent run of 70's style exploitation films such as THE DEVILS REJECTS and THE HILLS HAVE EYES remake. They may be inbred freaks, but they're still people, so they hit me where it hurts, and I love it! That's just my take, what scares you?

Stephen, you forgot Supernatural on Thurs. night.

If you're going to stick to genre, then Supernatural definitely fits the bill.

Just to add Weeds Season 2 Finale is on tonight. It looks like it will go out with a bang. :)

Nice job with Wasteland, keep up the good work!

Maybe it's just my computer, but for the last few weeks whenever I read this column there are question marks where the apostrophes and quotation marks should be. It's really quite annoying.

I generally use Firefox, but I checked the site on IE and I get boxes instead of question marks. Anyway, if anyone could check this out for me, I'd really appreciate it. The question marks make the article very hard to read and this only seems to be happening on Stephen's articles.

For me, this is the best time of year to have AMC and the many Encore manifestations on the ole Satelite.

Horrorfests and frightfests with good fashioned horror movies mixed with the cheesy ones too.

Who cares if I own them on dvd, having 24/7 access to them is still freaking sweet.

AMC shows a lot of good movies at this time of year. And I would not mind the commercials. But they are cut to shreds and are almost unwatchable.

DarkJedi • Oct 31, 2006, 02:59pm •
Yep, they do cut alot out but it at least it's entertaining as you do stuff around the house. Right now, their airing Halloween, Halloween 2, Halloween 3, Halloween 4, Halloween 5 in consecutive order so it goes well with the moods of Halloween itself....even if they do cut some good stuff out.

I really think this is one of the two times a year I'll watch AMC. The other time being the off chance they show Jaws.

Thank God! Bones is finally back. Is it just me or does it seem like the playoffs have gotten longer than regular season baseball.

Bones is great treat for Holloween week, they've got more cringe inducing stuff in the dialogue than most slasher movies do onscreen. Speaking of...

Anyone see the Starz Doc on slasher movies. Always fun seeing people explain the craft of fake butchery, hearing slasher's defended as as almost high art, or bashed as masogenist. They're slasher movies, dudes, good old school drunk teen fun, just enjoy the exess.

And as for the Silent Night, Deadly Night debate: Who the hell would take a five year old to see a slasher movie anyway, ten maybe--but five.

The Holloween movies were those rare horror movie that were actually scary rather than of kinda funny.

The Shining seriously freaked me out. Yeah, that shower scene was twisted, but it was freaky twins that got to me. Don't really know why but the way they talked sent chills.

The blood pooring out of the fireplace was pretty twisted too, and the kid say redrum over and over.
