BOURNE Breaks August Record

Hey, I apologize for the lateness of this more detailed Box Office Report. On Sunday, I had the pleasure of screaming my lungs out a very lively LinkinPark concert/festival from noon-midnight. While this has my vocal cords currently inoperable and my skin looking redder than a hot poker, the experience itself was awesome. While I can’t say a two words stringed together aloud with those vocals, I can still type with these fingers of mine now that I’m back. So here it is. Thanks to my Co-Editor for putting up preliminary numbers/report while I was elsewhere on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

Jason Bourne round-house kicked some serious booty of cash for Universal Studios pulling in an August record of 70.1 million for this weekend. The third and final (according to reports) film, Bourne Ultimatum, took in that eye staggering amount on 3,660 theaters across the nation averaging a very respectable $19,175 per showing. We knew Bourne would win this weekend but who saw a 70 million opening? The previous record holder for an August opener was Rush Hour 2 with 67.4 million on 08/03/01. This makes next weekend interesting seeing how Rush Hour 3 opens up in theaters. But who here in Mania see Rush Hour 3 making a 70 mil opening??

Landing in 2nd place for the weekend was Fox’s The Simpsons Movie grabbing 25.6 million in its second week of release. It should be noted that this is a 65.4% drop from its opening debut of 74 million. I can’t see Fox complaining about the drop though. The film featuring the residents of Springfield won the overseas markets this weekend adding to its totals. The film now has a worldwide total of 315.5 million in just 12 days of release for Fox. Factor in the fact that the show has been on for nearly two decades and the film only cost 75 mil to make, it’s easy to see the studio is very happy at the moment.

Following behind to take 3rd place is another new release this weekend. Disney’s Underdog fell short of competing with its demographic competitor, Simpsons, taking in 12.0 million this weekend in 3,013 theaters across the nation.

Universal’s other film this weekend (besides the won taking the top spot) was the comedy, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. It dropped 2 places from last weekend grabbing 10.5 million in change from its 3,289 theaters, a 45% drop from its second week totals. So far, the comedy has pulled in 91.6 million for Universal which offsets the 85 million budget. It’s definitely no Evan Almighty for Universal but then again, it’s not a Knocked Up either.

Taking advantage of a niche demographic with no clear competitors, New Line’s Hairspray musical continues to maintain a steady pace. It sang 9.3 million in cash over the weekend landing in 5th place, only dropping 41% and one spot from the previous weekend. So far, it’s grabbed up 78.9 million in domestic receipts.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix may have dropped 3 places from last weekend landing in 6th place for this report but its still doing very well in total numbers. The film took in 9.2 million in 3,125 theaters across the world.  In 4 weeks of release, it has now claimed the 3rd place spot for “Top Worldwide Earners” pushing Shrek 3 down to fourth place. The fifth adventure of Harry Potter and his friends has magically earned 770.4 million in release thus far. It’s likely to cross the 800 million barrier sometime later this week for Warner Bros.

Another Warner Bros flick, No Reservations, falls behind Potter in 7th place. The romantic comedy about competing chefs (Catherine Zeta Jones and Aaron Eckhart) cooked up 6.5 million in 2,425 theaters. In 2 weeks of release, it has a domestic total of 24.1 million.

Paramount & Dreamworks’ Transformers is nearing the 300 million mark. It will likely have it by the end of the week putting it in close proximity of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End which currently holds third place in the “Top Domestic Earners” for the season. Much like Mr. Potter moved King Shrek down a notch the last few days, it’s very likely alien robots will be sinking pirate ships or at least blowing holes in their ships. The action film landed in 8th place for the weekend adding another 5.9 million to its bank. Thus far, it has 296.3 million domestically and another 249.4 million overseas.

Now, it’s time for the two failures of this weekend. Paramount’s comedy, Hot Rod, opened up in 2,607 theaters and yet it pulled in only 5.0 mil in its debut. It averaged a measly $1,923 per showing cementing its 9th place finish.

The other debut this weekend, Lionsgate’s BRATZ, fell even shorter of the mark in 10th place with 4.3 million. There is more of an excuse for this film than Hot Rod since it only debuted in 1,509 theaters. This puts its average per showing higher as well. Still, it didn’t open up to the most spectacular numbers for Lionsgate.

I know that I dislike Ratner with a passion, but I`m going to see Rush Hour 3. Is it formulaic? Yes, but still none the less, funny. Ratner could probably do these movies for the rest of his career and make money off of them. They are just fun to watch. My sister saw Stardust about a month ago and said it was probably one of the worst movies she has ever seen in her life, which coming from her is a pretty bold statment. She thought the trailer was the best thing about it. I`ll probably wait for DVD for that one.
Dazzler 8/6/2007 6:40:36 AM
It seems Chris Tucker comes out for one gig and goes back into hiding with MJ till he needs more money. Probably the way to go.
wessmith1966 8/6/2007 6:56:20 AM
I'll probably see Rush Hour 3 with the gang, but I really have no desire to see it. I find Chris Tucker to be one of the most irritating actors around. His voice is like nails on a chalkboard to me. I'll be skipping Stardust. The trailers have done absolutely nothing for me other than showing how absolutely gorgeous Michelle Peiffer is.
djcgmcse 8/6/2007 9:07:04 AM
How does "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry" cost $85 million to make? Sandler and James must be cashing in a cool $25 million a piece...
Merin 8/6/2007 10:26:46 AM
Stupid blurry Bay exploding robots that hide in suburban back yards. . . I'm going to see Rush Hour 3. These are the films Ratner is good at - ridiculous action and somewhat funny comedy - and given Chan, who's always fun to watch even in almost unwatchable films, you can enjoy them. I'm pleasantly surprised at how well Bourne did. That film was so many levels above most of the action this summer - it was smarter, more dramatic, and not goofy at all. I may have to think about it more, but I do believe it'd get my pick for best action film of the summer. Key point - the film wasn't bloated. Well, so much for my first BO predictions. Pretty much bunked on it, with a few notable exceptions. Harry Potter, Pirates 3, Transformers and FF2 all confounded me in their actual takes.
jppintar326 8/6/2007 10:57:08 AM
Since I had Rush Hour 3 in my top ten, I think it will have a big opening. I wasn't surprised at all Bourne Ultimatium. I thought it was the best movie of the summer and definitely the best sequel I have seen this year. I don't know if there will be a fourth movie, but my gut tells me I doubt it.
celt6 8/6/2007 12:14:47 PM
"But who here in Mania see Rush Hour 3 making a 70 mil opening??" I do. Sorry, but like it or not, this has been a summer of film-going (for everything except Evan Almighty, of course). I'm guessing the hordes will go see this sequel in droves.
almostunbiased 8/6/2007 1:07:50 PM
Rush Hours make good money. I could see it getting close to that, but a little less.
muchdrama 8/6/2007 6:58:00 PM
I call "Ratner-hate" irrational. The man directs well crafted, interesting, entertaining movies. Period.
ponyboy76 8/7/2007 4:19:16 AM
Well, to be honest muchdrama, you aren`t too far off. I`d have to say my hatred of Ratner stems from his appalling and unforgivable, Uwe-Boll-like direction of X3. The scary thing is this guy`s movies make serious bank, while critical reaction is usually lower. I don`t like the guy. He thinks that he could do no wrong, but X3 proves that he most definitely can.
