Jason Bourne may not be making an appearance in The Bourne Legacy but that doesn't mean we won't see key characters from his recent past in Universal's spin-off of the franchise. Two such characters will apparently be Pam Landy and Dr. Albert Hirsch to be reprised by Joan Allen and Albert Finney, respectively. The two thespians are the latest to join the previously-confirmed stars Jeremy Renner, Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton and Oscar Isaac. Director Tony Gilroy is leading the production, based on a script he wrote.

As to the story itself, Gilroy explained the premise a few months back with:

"This is not a reboot or a recast or a prequel. No one's replacing Matt Damon. There will be a whole new hero, a whole new chapter...this is a stand-alone project," said Gilroy.

"The easiest way to think of it is an expansion or a reveal," Gilroy added. "Jason Bourne will not be in this film, but he's very much alive. What happened in the first three films is the trigger for what happens. I'm building a legend and an environment and a wider conspiracy... the world we're making enhances and advances and invites Jason Bourne's return [down the road]."

The Bourne Legacy arrives in theaters August 3, 2012.

This is kinda cool i guess but i bourne movie without bourne just isnt right. Now If Damon makes a cameo in some type of capacity that may makes things work better for the transition of stars.

I'm sure there will be plenty of references to the events of the first trilogy.  I think they're allowing the viewers to take a couple of steps back and see that what we've been shown so far is just a small part of a greater plot.  I like it.

Wiseguy 7/27/2011 8:14:10 AM

Maybe they've found a way to link it back to the real Jason Bourne hence no Matt Damon needed.

violator14 7/27/2011 8:34:01 AM

i guarantee there will be a Bourne-cameo cliffhanger at the end of the movie.

Wiseguy 7/27/2011 8:59:06 AM

Is there a money-back part to that guaranty

RedHood2010 7/27/2011 10:14:58 AM

This is good news.  I liked Landy's character.  It is a shame Abott (B. Cox) killed himself in the 2nd one.  He always rocks.

If this is a hit they'll link Damon with this guy in a new movie and cash in on it.

violator14 7/27/2011 10:58:50 AM

Wise- yes!

Hobbs- i think the proper response to your comment would be.... "DUH!" That's pretty much exactly their plan  .... haha =P

Can't stand the shaky camm in the Bourne movies. If this is more of the same, I won't be seeing it. Too bad. These are usually good movies

Really excited for this. I always thought Gilroy should have directed after Doug Liman stepped down since he's pretty much the architect of this series and is also a great writer director. Can't wait to see what he comes up with.

Samson, the shaky cam stuff is Paul Greengrass's calling card not Gilroy's. I doubt very seriously he'll go that route.

It will be funny if this spin off does better than the originals.
