Bowl Weekend is No Box Office Supernova
By Steve Biodrowski
February 01, 2000
It was a slow weekend at the box office for the genre, with no new science fiction, fantasy, or horror films opening. That should change this weekend, with the debut of SCREAM 3 from Dimension (the genre division of Miramax). In the meantime, fans had to content themselves with a handful of resilient holdovers, many of which are in second-run engagements by this point. Of note: FANTASIA 2000 continues strong in its Imax engagement; SUPERNOVA has pretty much burnt out; DOGMA passed the $30-million mark--not bad for a low-budget indie film; and SLEEPY HOLLOW seems poised to pass $100-million within the next few weeks (Tim Burton's first film to do so since BATMAN RETURNS).
Below are the genre films ranked at the box office for the Super Bowl Weekend. As always, totals are given in millions of dollars:
Stuart Little (4) 4.78/123.01
The Green Mile (5) 4.02/115.16
Galaxy Quest (7) 3.4/58.77
Toy Story 2 (10) 2.34/234.30
Fantasia 2000 (11) 1.86/16.41
Supernova (18) 1.24/12.16
Bicentennial Man (20) .981/55.70
American Beauty (23) .704/74.33
The World Is Not Enough (25) .559/124.35
Sleepy Hollow (27) .370/97.22
Being John Malkovich (29) .312/20.60
