What exciting box office news do we have to talk about this weekend? I thought an $11.5 mil winner was pretty bad last weekend but this weekend’s winner takes the cake for pathetic top performers. A whopping $7.8 estimated million for Bangkok Dangerous is the winner for this report. One has to wonder if September as a whole is going to be much of the same as these first two weekends of the month.
Lionsgate opened up the remake of Bangkok Dangerous on 2,650 theaters across the country so this points to an amazing $2,943 per showing for audiences in the top performing film of the weekend. Since the budget is set at $45 mil, this isn’t the best of openings for the film or Lionsgate.
Paramount and DreamWorks’ Tropic Thunder may have finally dropped to the 2nd place in its fourth week at the box office but the silver lining is that with its $7.5 mil tally this weekend, the film has crossed its budget of $92 mil domestically. The film has taken $96.8 mil here locally and another $2.6 mil in international markets, making for a worldwide pull of $99.4 million.
Sony follows in 3rd place with its comedy The House Bunny pulling in an estimated $5.9 million on 2,736 theaters across the country. This film will be considered a minor success for the studio as they kept the budget low at just $25 mil and have grossed $36.9 mil in its first three weekends of release.
Meanwhile, The Dark Knight continues rolling by pulling in steady numbers week after week. Despite being out for eight weeks already, the film is still showing in 2,575 theaters across the nation and pulled in another $5.7 million this weekend as a result. This has its domestic total sitting at an amazing $512.1 million mark for Warner Bros. and director Christopher Nolan. If you count the $417.0 million that the film has pulled in from international markets, the Bats sequel has grossed $929.1 million worldwide.
Overture Films has a success very likely with their thriller Traitor as well. The film debuted in 5th place last weekend and follows in 5th place with its second weekend of release by pulling in another $4.6 mil this weekend. Since the indie distributor kept the budget low at $22 mil, its domestic gross of $17.6 mil after ten days of release is a positive for the producers.
The same can’t be said for 20th Century Fox and Vin Diesel. His latest sci-fi adventure Babylon A.D. has been panned by critics and the director himself and has now dropped 57.8% in its second weekend of release. The film skidded into 6th place by pulling in an estimated $4.0 mil on 3,425 theaters across the nation, meaning that the film averaged only $1,167 per showing for audiences. The budget is set at $70 mil and the film has only grossed $17.1 mil.
Universal Pictures is slowly getting there with the remake Death Race landing in 7th place this weekend. The film grabbed another $3.5 mil this weekend on 2,586 theaters and is now sitting at a domestic tally of $29.7 mil after three weekends of release. The budget is moderately set at $45 mil.
Lionsgate debuted its spoof Disaster Movie in 7th place last weekend and lands in 8th place for this report by taking in another $3.3 million. The budget was kept low at $20 mil and the film has pulled in an estimated domestic tally of $10.8 mil after ten days of release.
Universal continues to impress with its musical Mamma Mia landing in 9th place. In fact, this film and The Dark Knight were both released on the same weekend and have both stayed in the top 10 since then, making them the longest Top 10 running successes for this summer. The film pulled in another $2.7 million this weekend to puts it total domestic mark at $136.2 million. If you include its $206.7 million from foreign markets, the musical has a worldwide gross of $343.0 million. And the budget from Universal is only $52 mil.
Sony also finds success with its action-comedy Pineapple Express doing well on a very low budget. In its fifth weekend of release, the film took 10th place with an estimated $2.4 mil in sales. Since opening up on August 6th, the film has grabbed a domestic total of $84.1 million against a budget of only $27 mil.

I'm giving serious consideration to seeing Dark Knight again next weekend.

What a drab weekend at the box office. The wife and I took in Woody Allen's flick, Vickie Christina Barcelona, and I thought it was pretty good. I'm not a huge W.A. fan, but Scarlet Johansen is just flat hot. The movie was well acted and had some good laughs. I tend to like my humor on the more low-brow end, but it was entertaining. In all truth, I don't even think the DeNiro and Pacino looks that great to me.

I think Righteous Kill will bomb. the two leads haven't been in anything good since Heat (probably what prompted them to reunite), and they are totally pimping this film like it was made by Scorsese!! Check the commercials: Actor voiceover/narration, check. Rolling Stones music, check. Graphics reminiscent of The Departed, check. It looks and smells like a wannabe.

Yeah....its a ZZZZZZZ week, mostly because most of us guys are pumped for football season which is part of the reason. Other reason is just simply what I said back in July....the movie slate gets very thin in terms of what's interesting. BANGKOK DANGEROUS is pretty much another remake of the japanese version. Not quite sure in wanting to see that, and TRAITOR looks pretty solid and will suffer a bit at the box office because the lack of generating buzz. And much of the reviews have been positive. Well...better watch football, toy around with more of the mockSUPERMAN script and watch more of these homemade lightsaber battles on YOUTUBE and start the new work week later tonight.

That's right Raith, it's football time and there is no way in hell any of these movies are taking me away from the Pig Skin game...I am more hyped about this season than I have been of any others in the last 10 years...I think the NFL has finally come to the point where just about any team can win it all and that makes it very exciting, ok not every team has a chance but it seems to be evening out from the bigger markets to the smaller ones, well see...I am going with the Chargers to take NFC this year... Traitor is the only movie that looks any good to me out of all the new ones that have come out so I might go see a day showing tomorrow...

The Chargers are in the AFC, mlaforcer. They're in the AFC West, the same as my favorite team the Chiefs. But the Chargers do have a chance on that division. I'm not crazy enough to think the Chiefs will do anything but suck this season after trading away Jared Allen. We're having these football discussions in our Sports forum if there's any NFL fans around.
Flint521466 9/7/2008 3:08:58 PM
Jarrod your dirty-ass Chiefs ruined BOTH my fantasy football teams when they knocked out Brady.......FUCK!
velgron 9/7/2008 5:09:17 PM
Traitor was not as good as expected.IMO Also, I have absolutely no interest whatsoever in football. So during football season TV is screwed for me. The best part of the weekend, was a rerun of Tales from the Crypt. Yay for the cryptkeeper! He can really pleasure this girl.

I actually thought that this weekend's new release schedule was so weak that we might see a return to number for The Dark Knight. While that didn't happened, the film still has yet to fall out of the top four in each weekend of its release which is still impressive given it's been out for 8 weeks.
