With no new wide releases hitting the market this weekend and the Christmas releases having an extra 7 days to pull in more numbers, this weekend’s report is a repeat of what we saw seven days ago. 20th Century Fox found themselves in 1st place yet again with their canine-central family tale Marley & Me. It should be said that it was a decent weekend all around for the top seven films and that all seven films stayed in their exact same spots from last weekend. And when the 6th place film is in the double digit territory, you can see that audiences spread the wealth around after the long holiday.
Marley found himself best in show with the comedy pulling in $24.0 million on 3,505 theaters across the country. With last weekend’s #1 performance, the latest numbers means the film has grossed $106.5 million in just 11 days of theatrical release. So even with no budget listed this film is a success story for Fox.
Walt Disney Pictures should also be pleased on future profit margins with their family fantasy Bedtime Stories striking up another $20.3 million in 2nd place over the weekend. It’s a bit surprising that the film isn’t landing in 1st place with having the most theaters (3,684) and a low running time but its performance is still up to speed for executives. After 11 days of release, the Sandler-led fantasy has pulled in $85.3 million domestically based off a budget of just $80 million.
Paramount follows behind in 3rd place with their latest release The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. The David Fincher-directed fantasy pulled in another $18.4 million on 2,988 theaters across the nation which means it had a respectable average of $6,158 per showing with audiences. Not bad numbers but the film still needs a few weeks before it can get near its $150 million price tag. With its first two weekends in the bag the film has grossed $79.0 million in the states.
After multiple delays and months of worries, Tom Cruise and his fellow comrades at United Artists can breathe a sigh of relief for their WWII thriller Valkyrie. The film may not be topping the more family friendly fare these past two weekends but it’s performing steady numbers in 4th place both weekends with it taking another $14.0 million over the past three days. The film has grossed $60.6 million since opening on Christmas. Decent numbers for a production costing only $75 million.
Warner Bros. likewise found themselves passing their budget line with their comedy Yes Man laughing up the 5th place spot by tacking on another $13.8 million. Since opening up three weekends ago, the Jim Carrey-led vehicle has grossed $79.4 million domestically and $14.9 million overseas. All combined, the $70 mil production has taken on $94.3 mil worldwide.
Sony returns in the 6th spot with the Will Smith film Seven Pounds taking in another $10.0 million on 2,758 theaters. With these latest numbers the film has also passed their budget line of $55 mil by grossing $60.0 mil in its first three weekends of release.
And the final film which repeated its 7th place performance is the Universal animation The Tale of Despereaux, which pulled in another $7.0 million over the last three days. With these latest numbers, the adventure has a domestic gross of $43.7 million. The budget is set at $60 mil.
Miramax executives found themselves climbing two spots from last weekend with their critical buzz Doubt taking in another $5.0 million. Out of all the wide releases this film is at the low theatrical end with just 1,287 theaters but that’s not stopping it from nearing its $20 mil price tag. After four weekends at the box office the film has grossed $18.7 mil.
20th Century Fox follows in 9th place with their remake The Day the Earth Stood Still grabbing another $4.8 million on 2,337 theaters. With the latest numbers the film has grossed $74.2 million here in the states. If you include the $100.6 mil from overseas, the Keanu Reeves vehicle has grossed $174.8 million worldwide. Not bad with a $80 mil budget.
And the final spot goes to Danny Boyle’s buzz worthy Slumdog Millionaire for Fox Searchlight. Topping a lot of critical lists for 2008, the film is still showing in only 612 theaters but still managing to find the top 10. It grabbed another $4.7 million over the weekend and with so few prints around the nation, the film has the highest average rate of $7,794 per showing.

Oooooooooooh, paragraph breaks nice.  How bout them edit buttons?

Didn't see any flicks this week.

It just seems like the movies out this holiday season aren't making their money back.

As for the changes on the site, oh well, I guess we'll get used to them . . . again . . . of course they'll change it again when we do.  Oh and my profile has been viewed only once, instead of thousands like it used to be.  Weird.  Still, looks nice.

I do miss where you can chose to hide things on your profile.  That was nice.

Oh and why double space always on paragraph breaks.  This is bad for lists.  Just an idea.

This looks very Microsoft Vista-ish, modern, but scroll doesn't seem to work correctly yet.

Oh yeah, and Aniston is still very hot.

I saw Spirit.  Wow that sucked hard.  It was too campy.  It needed to be grounded a bit more like 300 and Sin City.  Story sucked too.  Never read the book since it's not Marvel, so I am not sure if it was right on or not.  If it was fanboys must be a weird breed.

I saw Valkyrie this week also.  Very good movie.  I never knew about this.  I always thought the Germans were pretty much on the same page.  10 attempts on Hitlers life?  They should have shown a bit of that, that might make a good comedy, "GET HITLER"!  The movie ran slow and predictable and every good shot was in the previews as usual.  Would make for a better cable movie really than in theaters.

Funny how the box office was the same pretty much.  Glad "Yes Man" made it's money or close to.  I think that is my next one the way things are.

I don't think I double posted?  Where is the delete button?

myklspader 1/4/2009 4:54:48 PM

Well, I was busier than Hanso for once…

I saw Benjamin Button and was very pleased with it all around. The only thing I could complain about was the “Lighting” scenes were just too hammy to be in the cut and found them distracting to the pace of the movie. Fincher seems to have an eye for lighting and that really brought some richness to the shots as usual.

I also got to see “Valkyrie” and was very pleased with it. Just needed a little more push with the suspense building but it was good to see a thriller again from Singer.

“Yes Man” was pretty funny. Not as funny as I would like to see Jim Carrey but he is getting back up there.

And I just could care less about any Sandler movie and saved seven bucks on “Seven Pounds” cause that damn trailer just pretty much spelled out what the BIG SECRET is… and a friend I know that saw it just pretty much confirmed what I thought happened anyway.

Right now I am waiting for “Gran Torino” to float into my town, that looks like it is Eastwood's best/most solid effort since “Unforgiven” in my book.

Gran Torino goes wide this upcoming Friday.  I agree it looks good and I want to see Frost/Nixon.  I think that will be a fantastic movie as well.

DIdn't see anything this weekend either.  Every movie seems to be on pace to making its money back except Benny Button depending on what it does overseas.  Don't know about the Spirit though...I'm still curious to know what that cost to make.

Aniston doesn't do anything for me...she is getting too old.  I think they could have put Jennifer Love Hewitt in Marley and Me and the box office numbers would still be the same.  Families went to see it because it was a Dog movie not because of her.  I just don't think Aniston is star power but that's my opinion.  She is more tabloid power.

Still not too crazy for the websites new looks but I have to say, it's nice not having the web page crash on me like it used to do all the time.  Mania, I still want a broad view of the news...I'm telling ya, you guys are going to write articles that not many will read if we can't see it all.

I miss the old Cinescape website! I can't believe I've been coming to this website for 10 years now. I'm getting so old. The new site is just too much of an assault on my eyes...too much going on.

I didn't see any movies this weekend because it was NFL wildcard weekend which means my five star bean dip, cigars, adult beverages and cigars with the guys.

I can't wait for Gran Torino this weekend; movie looks great. I don't care how old Clint is, he's still the man.

I hope all of you fellow "maniacs" out there had a fun and safe new years. It's going to be a fun year for movies and I look forward to all of our spirited debates in the year ahead. Happy New Year!
