Two years ago, Daniel Craig became the new Bond when Casino Royale rolled into theaters with a debut of $40.8 million. With his second effort two years later, MGM has nearly doubled that mark with Quantum of Solace by grabbing the best Bond opening weekend ever tally of $70.4 million this weekend. Solace opened up in only 17 more theaters then its predecessor Royale but with a running time 40 minutes shorter, it allowed for more showings per day for a lot of theaters and the average rate came in around $20,400 per showing.
If you include the film’s amazing oversea total of $251.6 million from the past few weekends, MGM has racked up $322.0 million worldwide with Quantum of Solace. This has it very likely beating Casino’s worldwide total of $594.2 million by the time the film is all said and done.
Meanwhile, Paramount and DreamWorks didn’t do half bad with their returning Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa landing in 2nd place in its second weekend at the box office. The animation pulled in an estimated $36.1 million across the country on 4,065 theaters, which has it averaging $8,888 per showing. It has grossed $118.0 million domestically and if you include its $40.1 million from foreign markets, the film has $158.1 million worldwide after ten days of release.
Universal Pictures’ buddy comedy Role Models follows in 3rd place with a decent $11.7 million in sales this weekend, which has it in the profit margins after ten days of release. The film has grossed $38.1 million domestically and has a budget of only $28 mil.
The rest of the films couldn’t reach $6 million in sales with the top performers taking the majority of audiences’ attention.
Walt Disney lands in 4th place with its successful High School Musical 3: Senior Year managing another $5.8 million in ticket sales this weekend. With the new numbers, it now has a domestic gross of $84.3 million. If you add its foreign gross of $110.3 million, the musical has grossed $194.7 million worldwide. A very profitable tally for Disney seeing how it cost only $11 million to produce.
Universal Pictures and director Clint Eastwood grabbed the 5th place with Changeling pulling in an estimated $4.2 million on 1,896 theaters across the nation. After four weeks of release, the film has grossed $27.6 million domestically. Since its budget is $55 million, it still needs to go a bit further these next few weekends.
Director Kevin Smith and The Weinstein Company followed in 6th place with their latest comedy collaboration Zack and Miri Make a Porno taking $3.2 million on 2,210 theaters. This third weekend’s numbers place the film over its $24 million budget cost with a domestic gross of $26.5 million. And it doesn’t have very far to go to become Smith’s best box office performer which is Dogma at $30.6 million.
MGM also finds the top 10 with its returning Soul Men managing 7th place in its second weekend of release. The film pulled in another $2.4 million and has a domestic gross of $9.4 million. No budget has been release for one of Bernie Mac’s last acting efforts after he passed away last summer.
Fox Searchlight continues to add profits for its drama The Secret Life of Bees. The film took the 8th place and grabbed another $2.4 million this weekend on 1,449 theaters. After five weeks of box office release, the film which cost only $11 mil to produce has grossed $33.6 mil in domestic sales.
Lionsgate is likewise adding to their very successful Saw franchise with Saw V taking the 9th place this weekend with an estimated gross of $1.7 million on 2,002 theaters. The film which cost only $10.8 million has grossed $55.4 million domestically. If you add its foreign gross of $26.0 million, the fifth installment has grossed $81.4 million worldwide.
And the final spot goes to The Haunting of Molly Hartley which managed only $1.6 million on 1,587 theaters across the nation. In three weeks of box office release, the Freestyle film has pulled in only $12.6 million in sales.

And next week, it’s going to be families versus teenagers at the box office. One of the most anticipated films with young audiences this fall (according to polls) is the highly anticipated release of Twilight, which is based on the Stephenie Meyers’ vampire novels. Summit Entertainment has the film hitting at least 3,200 theaters next weekend so it should do very well.
The only issue is that Walt Disney is also releasing their latest animation Bolt into at least 3,500 theaters next weekend and the family friendly film clocks in half an hour shorter then Twilight which translates to even more showings per day.
And of course, we have the returning hits Quantum of Solace and Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, which will likely go strong for a few more weeks through the Thanksgiving holidays and beyond.

Not a good month for me financially, so no new movies unfortunately. I am looking forward to seeing the new Bond film but it will probably be on DVD at this point. At least I got to see a bootleg of the Star Trek trailer though. I'm not much of a trekker these days but I have to say (ridiculous opening scene aside) it looks pretty good. I saw Nimoy and Quinto in person at an event back in March and they both seemed pretty happy with the product so far. Keeping my fingers crossed JJ.

I liked Casino Royale with its grittier style and new take on Bond, and I was looking forward to seeing QoS. After watching the film, and letting it stew in my thoughts for a few hours, I can say that the best part of the movie was seeing the trailer for Star Trek. To say I was disappointed would be a huge understatement. I continue to like Craig's performance as Bond and Dench's "M" and the interaction of the two, but for the rest of the movie...

SOME SPOILERS, SO BE AWARE...

I really liked that the high tech gadgets and Spy Hunter-type cars are gone. I do like Bond's use of his cell phone and the support he gets from headquarters. His support staff and the stuff he does with the phone have replaced all of the gadgets. While I love Bond movies, this one was too cookie cutter for my taste. Car chase...check. Boat chase...check. Plane chase...check. Needless hot agent that gets killed almost as quickly as she appears...check (and on that note I was soooooo disappointed with Gemma's role. She was completely useless in the film, and she's supposedly a Bond girl so why in the hell have her in a trench coat? Give her some clothes that show off the goods...That's what she was there for in the first place). Olga, was OK, but a rather forgettable Bond girl with a lousy backstory. I know the producers are playing off the Bourne series' popularity, but the editing of this film was absolutely horrible. The action scenes were cut so fast that it was really hard to follow the action. Watch the best Bond films; the action sequences were so cool because you could see everything happen in long sequences, not rough cuts. The villain, Dominic, was a dork and pathetic as a bad-guy. And what was with the building in the middle of the desert? It was just this big compound smack dab in the desert for no reason? The story/script? Awful. The dialogue was nothing more than a reason to get from one action set piece to another. They were going for a grand scale with this worldwide organization that has its hands deep into the pockets of every government and Fortune 500 company, but to me it came off as a lot of contrived nonsense. And yes, most Bond movies are nonsense, but this one just really missed the mark for me. Maybe I was expecting too much. Anyway, at least I got to see the Star Trek trailer. And what's up with the young Kirk's hair? Is it just me or did it look like a bad wig?

hanso 11/17/2008 3:41:18 AM

Quantum of Solace owes all it's opening weekend to Casino Royale, a much better Bond film that sparked life back into the franchise.  I was expecting a film that could rival the original since this one is the first true sequel in the Bond universe, sadly it was a let down.

I think Marc Foster is to blame, Martin Campbell did a terrific job with all the action in Casino Royale.  Marc Foster style for action sucked, either that or the guy was just trying to be Paul Greengrass and sadly he aint no Paul.  If QoS focused more on story then  I could see Foster making sense but it was a more action oriented film, so I don't know why they went to him for the movie.

Anyway, QoS is not a bad film at all, I enjoyed it but as a Bond film it sucks.  They should've named it Bond Supremacy cause that's all what it seemed like to me with the shaky cam action sequences and the way Bond was acting.  I get no gadgets and that it's a real Bond, but for Q's sake can't they have the man say "Bond, James Bond"?  Can he bang the Bond chick?

Dazzler 11/17/2008 4:27:40 AM

I saw new Bond also.  It was ok.  New Bond is like watching a sledge hammer in motion.  Roger Moore is still my favorite Bond.  I could not even tell you what new Bond was about.  Main villian was unimpresive.  No impressive scenes either.  They do 1 sec edit jumps in the actions.  They finally bring back the theme score throughout the movie and it's clearly heard in the credits along with the walking sniper shot even though it belongs in the begining of the movie.  This is not worth a dvd buy much less a Blu ray one.

Flint521466 11/17/2008 5:23:45 AM

I liked it.  I think people expected too much out of this.  I thought it was a perfect extension of CR.  This "mission" begins 20 min after CR ends. So it stands to reason Bond is gonna be royally pissed & heartbroken and just lookin' to fuck up anything.  Craig is baddass in this capacity.  "A blunt instrument" to say the least. I thought Foster captured the mood/tone of this Bond quite well and  I really didn't notice the shaky-cam so it wasn't a big deal to me.  I dug the nod to Goldfinger.  As for Greene being a weak vilian, he's a small fish. Just a standard creep.  He was a decent antagonist for a 101 min. movie.  I do think JB should've porked Olga.  And I do wish they'd incorporate the Bond theme into the movie more.

JarrodSarafin 11/17/2008 5:38:08 AM

I'm with you, Flint. Since knowing that the film starts out mere moments after Casino Royale, I wasn't expecting a story-filled Bond film so much as a revenge film.

And a revenge film is what I got here.

Have to totally agree with the editing critics though. Someone over at Columbia Pictures and MGM should have told Marc Forster that "Bourne action editing" is out. Most audiences prefer action sequences to be filmed from out of the box angles these days...Shaky cams are not an audience favorite anymore.

But...minus some of the action scenes, I thought the film was spot on. And I most definitely liked the ending between Bond and M.

Judi Dench had some good scenes in this latest installment and Bond had personal growth that will play important in future films with Craig as the leading star.

And I also liked that it wasn't a standalone Bond film like so many before it. That it was directly connected to a previous installment.

Guess I'm surprised by some of the reviews I've seen.

chirop1 11/17/2008 6:11:04 AM

I liked it a lot.  True, it wasn't quite as good as Casino Royale... but CR was a totally different tone than QoS.  I thought it was very well done.  I enjoyed the Opera scene, the nod to Goldfinger, and the fact that M was in the movie much more.  One of my favorite lines from her was her rant about people saying that they have people everywhere and its just a boast.  Ha!

Dazzler, if Roger Moore is your favorite Bond... I can see why Craig would not be your cup of tea.  No one shows off man-boobs while floating in Outer Space quite like Roger Moore!!!  ;-)

I hate the shaky cam thing.  That is the reason why I haven't seen the third Bourne film.  If I knew this Bond film had shaky cam action sequences, then I would have not seen it.  I hate shaky cam they ruin the movie.  I heard that in the movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith, the director wanted to do shaky cam action scences, but Brad Pitt didn't let him.  Good call Brad Pitt.

WISEGUY562 11/17/2008 7:49:40 AM

I'm with Flint on this. Thouroughly enjoyed it.. The villain is small fry and was just a link to the larger organisation he's after and helping set up the finale. I was expecting some of those shaky cam-quick editing techniques from Bourne but I didn't even notice it, maybe I was just into the film. I thought it was damn good. It just seems like we're watching Bond growing from a blunt instrument to the more cerebral character he'll need to be later on IMO. Can't wait for the next one.

TheStormrider 11/17/2008 8:27:39 AM

I saw QoS and was a little dissapointed.  I still enjoyed it.  I think though that theres a bigger picture.

We went from sentimental bond.  To vengeful bond,  making choices on his feelings, and into 'no regret, no remorse, womanizing  because I cant let myself care'bond.

I think that this movie is a c .  I thought that CR was a a-

I think that when the third with craig is released, and then to dvd, and you watch them all together,  it may provide a better experience.  There had to be a way to take his character from Point a to point b.  It just so happens the route was a c .

I agree though,  tha the fast cut action scenes and shaky camera are not suited for a bond film, but lets face it.  Until we have 100 mil to dish out to make a movie,  we have to go with what the execs demand.  Unless were willing to fully boycot films.

And as we all know,  the average person is too weak minded to go agaisnt the grain.  Therefore the fan base will never make a stand, and the studios will continually give us meaningless dribble.
