It had to happen: 'The Dark Knight' finally concedes the #1 spot to the other hero of the summer movies: Robert Downey Jr., but proves that fans like Batman better than Yoda.
According to estimates published by Box Office Mojo, the Bat-sequel came in at #2, trailing behind Ben Stiller's 'Tropic Thunder', which features 'Iron Man' lead Robert Downey Jr., among an ensemble cast.
'The Dark Knight' gathered another $16.8 million, which means it has now earned a whopping $471 million domestically.
This was enough to outdo the other two new movies debuting this week: 'Mirrors' and 'Star Wars: The Clone Wars'. It's somewhat ironic then, that the weekend numbers also pushed the comic flick past the original 'Star Wars' on the all-time domestic chart. It is now #2 there, a distant second to 'Titanic'.
The movie has also breached the top 20 all-time world-wide grosses, now standing at #19. It's $800 million tally gives it a slight edge over 'Shrek the Third'
In other suphero movie news: with five new movies ahead of it, 'Hancock' exits the top ten in its seventh week, tumbling six places to #14. That movie's bank now stands at a respectable $225 million.
