Box Office: 'The Dark Knight' reigns over all!

'The Dark Knight' is the #1 movie in the country and has broken all kinds of box office records. 'Hancock', 'Hellboy II' and 'Wanted' remain draws.

According to weekend estimates published by Box Office Mojo, the bat sequel took in over $155 million with a traditional three-day start. This topples the record held by last year's 'Spider-Man 3', which grabbed over $151 million in the same frame. It also makes 'Dark Knight' the best July opening of all time and the best PG-13 opening of all time.

The movie earned $18.49 million in the first minute of Friday morning, from 12:01 am screenings alone, which is a box record in itself (best opening minute?).

The movie took in a grand total of about $67.5 million on Friday, making it the best opening day and the best single day performance of any film.

'The Dark Knight', aided by the fresh start 'Mamma Mia!' contributed to an overall weekend record, with domestic films garnering over $250 million. Previous best weekend was $218 million.

If tracking holds, the film is poised to make $220 million in its first week. This would be more than 'Batman Begins' made in its entire domestic run.

'Hancock' also remains strong. In spite of two major opening films, the Will Smith starrer only slipped one spot, falling from #2 to #3.  An extra $14 million bring that movie's domestic gross $191.5 million.

The big tragedy of the week is 'Hellboy II: The Golden Army' which plummetted a precipitous four rankings, going from #1 to #5 in its second week. The critically acclaimed Guillermo del Toro adaptation (holding an impressive  88% on Rotten Tomatores) hasn't clicked with moviegoers. It lost a disastrous 71% of its viewers this week and took in a mere $10.5 million. The total domestic gross now stands at around $56.4 million, well below the film's budget.

'Wanted' is still both-barrels blazing in its fourth week. The movie gave up three spots to the week's new starts ('Space Chimps' being the third), falling from #5 to #8. It brought in about $5 million, bringing the tally to over $123.3 million.
