History tends to repeat itself at the box office year after year and this weekend is no different. Last year for our Mania box office report, we were talking about Walt Disney winning its second consecutive weekend in a row with their family film The Game Plan taking $16.6 million over more adult-oriented fare such as Peter Berg’s The Kingdom and The Heartbreak Kid. Two years ago in 2006, the winner for that box office report had the family film Open Season also taking the 1st place with a $23.6 mil payday over adult-focused material such as The Guardian.
So, who wins this weekend? A family film or an adult-focused thriller?
Beverly Hills Chihuahua takes the #1 spot of course. Walt Disney landed in the top spot by pulling an estimated $29.0 million on 3,215 theaters across the nation in its debut weekend. The heavily marketed kid-friendly fare averaged a respectable $9,020 per showing with audiences. No budget was released for the family comedy but with $29.0 million over its first three days, this film is well on its way to becoming another success for the studio that Mickey built.
Meanwhile, Paramount and DreamWorks find their D.J. Caruso-led thriller Eagle Eye dropping to 2nd place in its second weekend at the box office. The film pulled in another estimated $17.7 million on 3,516 theaters across the country. With that amount of theaters, a lot of people considered the film a candidate for the 1st place spot again despite the film going up against 6 new wide releasing films this weekend. Obviously, it didn’t work out for Caruso and Shia LaBeouf. The film is still in good shape box office wise by having pulled in an estimated $54.6 million in ten days of domestic release. By next weekend, it should be near its $80 million price tag.
New coming leading star Michael Cera and Sony Pictures debuted their latest teen comedy Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist in 3rd place with an estimated $12.0 million. While this opening isn’t as good as Sony and Cera’s 2007 hit Superbad, which opened up with $33.0 mil, it’s still a respectable opening for a film with likely a very low budget. Since the film opened this weekend in only 2,421 theaters, they had an average of $4,957 per showing with audiences around the nation.
Richard Gere and Diane Lane dropped two places to 4th place for its second weekend of release with Nights in Rodanthe. Their second romantic vehicle, a few years after Unfaithful hit theaters, pulled in an estimated $7.3 million for this report on 2,702 theaters. In ten days of release, the film has grossed $25.0 million domestically.
Warner Bros. and New Line expanded their Ed Harris-led western Appaloosa this weekend, going from 37th place to 5th place over the course of one week. The western starring Viggo Mortensen, Harris and Jeremy Irons grabbed an estimated $5.0 million on 1,045 theaters around the nation in its first wide distributed weekend. This has its domestic tally sitting at $5.5 million.
Sony Screen Gems and Samuel L. Jackson’s Lakeview Terrace drops three places to 6th place for this report by pulling in an estimated $4.5 million on 2,574 theaters. Since Screen Gems continues to utilize a successful formula of releasing thrillers with low budgets, this film is yet another credit to their resume. The film was produced on a budget of only $20 million and has grossed $32.1 million in three weekends of domestic distribution.
The same formula could be said for Focus Features and the Coen brothers’ Burn After Reading. The film may have dropped two places to 7th place but it’s already in the profit margins. The film added another $4.0 million to its total this weekend, a number which has its domestic gross sitting at $51.6 million after four weekends at the box office. It was produced for only $37 million.
The most successful of all the latest releases has to be Samuel Goldwyn’s Fireproof though. For a film produced for only $500,000, the film has landed in the top ten in its first two weekends at the box office and has pulled in an estimated $12.4 million in domestic sales. Not bad at all for a film showing in only 852 theaters.
And the final two films for this box office are the newcomers An American Carol and Religulous for Vivendi and Lionsgate respectively. The David Zucker-led comedy “Carol” opened up in 1,639 theaters this weekend and wound up with an estimated $3.8 million pay day.
Meanwhile, Religulous was debuted in only 502 theaters and still managed the 10th spot by taking in an estimated $3.5 million in domestic receipts.

Next weekend should be interesting to watch. We have a few wide releases, all ranging between 2,000-3,000 theaters. Ridley Scott opens up his Body of Lies on 2,500+ theaters against the sports drama The Express (2,700+ theaters) and the horror thriller Quarantine (2,300+ theaters).
The family adventure City of Ember will also hit 2,000 theaters for 20th Century Fox, though it is unlikely to beat all three of the above films.
Who do you think will win?

I'm glad a movie for kids is #1 not many movies these days can be viewed by young ones.

What?!?
WISEGUY562 10/5/2008 2:33:38 PM
I was able to check out Appaloosa this weekend. I was really looking forward to this as I love westerns and we get so few now a days. But alas I must admit that I was underwhelmed. Good cast except for Zellweger.

I wanted to check out Religulous, An American Carol, Nick and Norah and BH Chihuahua (that's right, I'm not ashame to admit it) but stuff got in the way. Maybe during the week.

I don't think I've seen one commercial for City of Ember.

Body of Lies has too much star power, it looks good so it should win the weekend easily.

Body of Lies and Quarantine are the two that I'm looking forward to. I'm on the fence with City of Ember.

By the way
How about them REDSKINS
Where my boys hanso and fft at.

What a revolting development. I saw the trailer for Chihuaha and thought, "That's a perfect example of creatively bankrupt, corporate driven garbage." Have I seen the movie? I'm proud to say I haven't. But c'mon...anyone who saw the trailer and thought they wanted to see that is probably the same kind of person who has posters of cats plastered all over their workspace. You know, the kind where a cat clings to a wash line and there's the line "Hang In There" at the top. Terrible.
hanso 10/5/2008 3:07:31 PM
Yo Wise, do you have that poster The Sleeper is talking about? lol. What's wrong with you man, wanna see the chihuahas? I didn't check any movies out this weekend. Good ol Mrs.Hanso got me an Xbox360. I told her the Xbox made up for making me miss TDK on opening day :) I wanted to see Nick & Nora but the Mrs. didn't and I wasn't going to go alone. I would feel weird. I'd be the creepy alone guy at a teen movie. Next week I'm checking out Body of Lies. Redskins bitches!! Whaaaaaat? What's that sound? It's the Skins rising in the NFC EAST.
kaybar 10/5/2008 3:42:40 PM
I'm glad the skins are finally using cooley again, now if only the Steelers can also go 4-1 tonight... Body of Lies is winning next week, hands down.
WISEGUY562 10/5/2008 4:05:46 PM
hanso, Yeah, I got that poster. That shit is glued to my bedroom ceiling. Last thing I see before going to sleep and first thing I see when I wake up. I have it on my keychain, my car scents hanging from my mirror, car bumper sticker, calendar...... Ain't nothing wrong with that, is it? Now you understand why Dutch (Shield) must die BH Chihuahua, Bolt and there's another dog film at the end of the year. Want to see them all. What's wrong with you guys, doesn't the kid in you want to see this. Besides until they remake that tv movie Devil Dog: The Hound of Hell these'll have to do.
almostunbiased 10/5/2008 4:13:22 PM
I had a big Poker Party on Saturday, and work to do Sunday so no time for movies, but I'm sure my kids will want me to take them to the Chihuahua movie. Wow I've never typed that word before. I had to really think about it. I haven't seen a movie in the theater since Aug. There's something seriously wrong with me. Hey Wise, where'd you get the poster, I'd love to buy a copy. Man Sleeper, did we get up on the wrong side of the bed this morning?

Mrs. Flint & I caught Nick & Norah. We're BIG Michael Cera fans from his Arrested Development days. We liked it. Pretty funny. Wasn't great wasn't awful. We live 1/2 an hour from NYC and in the movie we saw alot of our "haunts" which was cool.

I've said it before & I'll say it again; I love the concept of a talking dog. No matter what the context. But I couldn't bring myself to pay even $7.50 to see BHC. I will see Bolt.

As for "Body of Lies" meh....looks like a rental to me.

As for the 'Skins; They do look tough & the schedule plays in their favor, however, they need to beat the Giants before they run shit in the NFC East.

Jarrod; I thought the Chiefs would have some confidence/momentum going into Carolina. They looked almost as bad as my Browns. Notice I said ALMOST;-) The Browns SUCK
needaname04 10/5/2008 4:58:32 PM
Another Chiefs fan here...I can't imagine it can get much worse than the game today. Anyway---I'm in the process of reading Blindness and am really looking forward to the movie. But, it might not even be in theaters when I get done reading it because somehow it didn't even make the top ten. I didn't even think a wide release could do that...
