On Halloween, Saw V jumped ahead of everyone for the weekend by grabbing $3.1 million. But once everyone was done trick and treating, Disney’s singing teenagers took over once again for Saturday and Sunday making High School Musical 3: Senior Year the #1 film for its second consecutive weekend. Basically, Disney has won 4 of 5 weekends this October by this and their earlier released Beverly Hills Chihuahua.
HSM 3 grabbed another $15.0 million this weekend on 3,626 theaters across the nation, which makes for an average cash haul of $4,146 per showing with audiences. Set against a budget of only $11 mil, the musical has grossed $61.7 million after only ten days of box office release.
Kevin Smith and The Weinstein Company found 2nd place with their debuting comedy Zack and Miri Make a Porno, which pulled in an estimated $10.6 million in its first three days at the box office. The film opened up in only 2,735 theaters so this makes for a respectable average of $3,906 per showing. They haven’t released a budget price tag but Smith tends to keep his production costs pretty low. This is Kevin’s second best opening film with Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back being the leader by opening up with $11.0 mil in 2001.
Following in 3rd place is Lionsgate’s Saw V, which is already another success for the horror franchise. The fifth Jigsaw game of deadly puzzles pulled in an estimated $10.1 million this weekend while appearing on 3,084 theaters across the nation. In ten days of release, the film has grossed $45.8 million domestically and another $6.4 million overseas. Not bad at all for a film costing only $10.8 million to produce.
Universal expanded Clint Eastwood’s Changeling into 1,835 more theaters this weekend and enjoyed 4th place as a result by bringing in another $9.4 million. The film had the highest average per show of the top ten with a rate of $5,085 per viewing. After two weekends, one limited and one wide, the drama has grossed $10.0 million domestically.
Freestyle had the final debuting film of this weekend by launching its horror film The Haunting of Molly Hartley into 2,652 theaters and they wound up in 5th place as a result. The film grabbed $6.0 million in its first three days of release. No budget has been released as of yet.
Disney followed in 6th place with their successful Beverly Hills Chihuahua taking another $4.7 million this weekend. While we have no budget to report yet, the film is still likely already a success with a domestic gross of $84.0 million domestically and another $16.1 million from international markets. Its worldwide tally is not sitting at $100.1 mil.
Fox Searchlight is enjoying a moderate success with their drama The Secret Life of Bees as well since the indie distributor likewise kept their budget very low. The film enjoyed 7th place by taking in another $4.0 million this weekend on 1,611 theaters across the country. After three weekends, it has a domestic tally of $25.2 million with a budget of only $11 mil.
Searchlight’s big brother 20th Century Fox follows with their video game adaptation Max Payne reaching the budget mark in its third weekend of release. The Mark Wahlberg-led film lands in 8th place with an estimated $3.7 million in sales. This has its domestic gross at $35.5 million and its foreign gross at $15.9 million. Overall, the film has grossed $51.4 million worldwide after 17 days of release, set against a budget of only $35 mil.
Shia LaBeouf likely has another $100 million grossing film on his hand domestically with D.J. Caruso’s Eagle Eye. The film already has $150 mil worldwide but with it pulled in an estimated $3.4 mil this weekend, the film’s domestic gross is now at $92.5 mil here in the states. After another two weeks or so, it will likely cross the $100 domestic mark. As I say, since it has pulled in $57.5 mil overseas, DreamWorks and Paramount have a worldwide gross of $150.1 mil with their thriller.
It’s not looking as good for Warner Bros. and New Line’s Pride & Glory. Even with a low budget of $30 mil, the film is already grabbing 10th place after only two weekends at the box office and still needs another $20 mil before it can reach its budget mark, a forecast doesn’t look doable for the studios. It pulled in only $3.2 million this weekend on 2,585 theaters and it has a domestic gross of $11.6 million after ten days of release.

And the families will have yet another movie (and likely box office winner) next weekend if October wasn’t enough for them. Paramount and DreamWorks are launching their sequel animation Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa into at least 3,900 theaters next weekend. With the film having a running time of 1 hour and 29 minutes, that’s a lot of showing per theater per day, which means the film is likely the sure winner for the weekend following national (and local) elections.
See you Maniacs next weekend with more family talk.
And before we go, if you haven’t already read it, MGM cleaned up at the U.K theaters this weekend with their latest James Bond adventure Quantum of Solace. You can read about it here. The film hits domestic theaters here on November 14, 2008.
Friday November 7, 2008 Releases:

Role Models (2,700+ theaters)
Soul Men (2,000 theaters)
Limited
House (2008)

<P itxtvisited="1">Way to go HSM3!!!! O.K. just kidding i don't really care about the movies until two weeks from now when 007's QoS opens up. Anyone else think it's funny that Disney beats porno... ewwww guys fix the title.</P>
daforce 11/2/2008 4:20:44 PM

I'm fairly sure that Porno is going to go down even faster next weekend.

And yes, that pun was intended.

<P itxtvisited="1">Changeling is just another remarkable film by <A class=iAs style="FONT-WEIGHT: normal! important; FONT-SIZE: 100%! important; PADDING-BOTTOM: 1px! important; COLOR: darkgreen! important; BORDER-BOTTOM: darkgreen 0.07em solid; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent! important; TEXT-DECORATION: underline! important" href="#" target=_blank itxtdid="6942060">Clint Eastwood</A>. Who would've thought that Dirty Harry would turn out to be one of the best directors today. Mystic River, Flags of Our Fathers, Letters fron Iwo Jima, Million Dollar Baby just to name his most recent ones. I love how his films usually don't give in to comfortable predictable endings. The film didn't pack the emotional punch I thought it would but it was great none the less. I guess that just speaks to how high my expectations are for his films. Jolie also proves that she's not only hot and has a beautiful face but is a damn good actress to boot, but we already knew that. The entire cast and sets really do transport you back to that era.</P><BR itxtvisited="1" /> <P itxtvisited="1">RockNrolla = great fun. If you're a fan of Ritchie and Tarantino then this is right up your alley. It isn't quite to the standards of Snatch but it was close IMO. I loved it. My only complain is that I would've liked to have seen a little more of the violence and some gore. Yeah I know it's a dumb complain but after seeing The Changeling the night prior I was in the mood for some "oohs and ahs"</P><BR itxtvisited="1" /> <P itxtvisited="1">Skipped Zack and Miri. Not a big Rogen fan. Way overrated and a lousy actor.</P><BR itxtvisited="1" /> <P itxtvisited="1">Nice to see Bond doing so well. That's my next must see film. I won't read too much into the numbers because afterall he is a British icon so I'm not surprised that is doing well. Still I can't wait to judge for myself.</P><BR itxtvisited="1" /> <P itxtvisited="1">Fuck the Dallas Cowgirls, bunch of bitches</P>
almostunbiased 11/2/2008 4:56:52 PM

Yeah, I'm no Rogan fan either.

Overall I'd say this weekend was a dud.  I did watch Journey to the Center of the Earth with my sun this weekend.  We both thought it was fun.  Of course I also watch Casino Royale getting ready for QOS in two weeks.  I can't frickin wait.

Oh and what the hell are you talking about?  Dallas Cowgirls???

hanso 11/2/2008 4:57:22 PM
<P itxtvisited="1">I'm a Kevin Smith fan and a Rogen fan so I liked Zack & Miri.  The movie had it's funny moments and it's proof that Brandon Routh isn't dead.  Best line of the movie "Let us fuck!"  lol.  I had never seen Jason Mewes not playing Jay before, he was funny in this.  Oh, and <A class=iAs style="FONT-WEIGHT: normal! important; FONT-SIZE: 100%! important; PADDING-BOTTOM: 1px! important; COLOR: darkgreen! important; BORDER-BOTTOM: darkgreen 0.07em solid; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent! important; TEXT-DECORATION: underline! important" href="#" target=_blank itxtdid="6942342">Justin Long</A> was pretty funny in this. The movie isn't anything special, might be a wait for video actually and the ending they went with sucked balls.</P><BR itxtvisited="1" /><BR itxtvisited="1" /> <P itxtvisited="1">Next week I'm checking out Role Models. I wanted to see RocknRolla also but Gears of Wars 2 is coming out on Friday so I ain't got time for both movies plus Gears.</P><BR itxtvisited="1" /><BR itxtvisited="1" /> <P itxtvisited="1">I'm sure most of you cats that wanna lay TDK's success on Heath's death are gonna be running like crazy to your local movie theater next week and get Soul Men to open up at #1 and break records.  I mean, the guy is dead, must mean it's gonna open huge.</P><BR itxtvisited="1" /><BR itxtvisited="1" /> <P itxtvisited="1">Redskins bitches!  oh wait, that's tomorrow.</P>
evilbeagle 11/2/2008 5:15:49 PM

I stayed home today while my wife and daughter went to see the talking dog movie.  I got to watch my Chiefs fuck up yet another potential win.  I'm not too mad at them however, it's looking like Tyler Thigpin might actually be a quarterback for them.

I watched Sarah Marshal this weekend, and was only mildly entertained.  The wife and I were going to see Porno, but ever since Kevin Smith dropped his last few turds (Jersey Girl, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob--at least it was decent) I'm cautious about seeing his movies.  Loved the early stuff; Clerks, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy was maybe his best.

akobus 11/2/2008 5:19:23 PM

"I'm fairly sure that Porno is going to go down even faster next weekend."

Indeed Kevin Smith films usually make around $20-$30 million in theaters, and thats the successful ones,  a lot of his others tank in theaters and gain a following on DVD, as for Zack and Miri I figure it will make around $18-$20 million domestically, and yes Kevin Smith fans will probably lap it up on DVD, but everyone else will ignore it, like everyone else ignores most of his movies.  I've never seen the big deal with Kevin Smith, I've seen several of his films and I really just don't find them or the man himself that likable really.

StarlightGuard 11/2/2008 5:53:24 PM

I'm not a Rogen fan either.

But I am a Kevin Smith film and Zack and Miri is his best.

wiseguy, you oughta give Zack and Miri a chance...but only if you like Kevin Smith...it was hilarious

hanso's right, that line was the best...I'm laughing and cringing at the same time going "oh god this is brilliant and terrible at the same time"

next up for Disney, High School Musical 4 -- Disney After Dark where vanessa hudgens experiments with those odd hot feelings that come from Down There.

hanso 11/2/2008 6:23:09 PM
<P itxtvisited="1">Damn it now I gotta look for the Vanessa Hudgens nudie pics cause of Starlight.</P><BR itxtvisited="1" /> <P itxtvisited="1">Can't say Zack & Miri is Smith's best though.  I'd still put Chasing Amy and Clerks above Zack & Miri. </P>
Dazzler 11/3/2008 4:46:23 AM

Zack and Miri was good.  Movie got real slow after their sex scene.  Movie was packed with people.  Not sure why the low BO.  The guy coming off the street drink during the shoot should have been Kevin Smith, not sure why he did not do it.
