Box Office Report

Box Office: DreamWorks Using KUNG FU on Competition

By: Jarrod Sarafin
Date: Sunday, June 08, 2008

DreamWorks Animation and Paramount joined together to bring a smash hit Shrek the Third to theaters last summer, being one of the top 10 films of 2008 at the box office. It looks like they’re looking to repeat the feat this summer with their latest animation Kung Fu Panda kicking box office butt this weekend. The Jack Black-led voice cast lands on top by opening in 4,114 theaters and grabbing $60.0 million. While this obviously isn’t as good as last summer’s $121.6 mil opening for Shrek the Third, it’s still quite an opening for an unproven franchise. There can be no question who’s having the last laugh this summer in Hollywood circle, with Paramount co-distributing this and managing Iron Man and Indy IV.

Following in 2nd place is the debut of Adam Sandler’s You Don’t Mess with the Zohan. The comedic take on a counter-terrorist soldier wanting to cut hair premeired on just 3,462 theaters this weekend but still found a way to grab $40.0 mil from audiences. This kind of opening has it averaging $11,554, a pretty good average for a film not even in first place. Sony lists the budget at 90 mil so this opening has it set to clearly make some money if it doesn’t have a major drop the next few weeks. Technically, even with a drop, it’s still likely getting its money back.

Following in 3rd place is a film which has clearly made its money back for Paramount, the fourth adventure of Indiana Jones. The latest installment into the series grabbed another $22.8 at the box office in its 3rd weekend at the box office, just a 49% drop from its second week totals. In 18 days of release, the film now has $253.0 mil domestically. As of last weekend, it has $267.1 mil in foreign sales so its worldwide gross is sitting at $520.1 mil. The latest round of international numbers should be arriving tomorrow with the actuals.

Right behind Indy in 4th place is last weekend’s champion Sex and the City dropping 3 slots and pulling in $21.3 mil on its 3,325 theater prints. This is a 62.6% drop from its debut but New Line is already in the clear with the film anyway with them keeping the budget at $65 mil. In its first two weekends at the box office, it has pulled in $99.2 mil.

Meanwhile, Rogue Pictures’ The Strangers finds its way into 5th place by taking another $9.2 mil from audiences this weekend. This film too is yet another good notch on the resume for Universal’s Rogue Pictures because they kept the budget very low at just $9 mil, making their $37.6 mil domestic gross a success.

Following in 6th is the third and best example that Paramount executives are so happy this summer season. Iron Man may be getting pulled out of theaters after a month of release but that’s not stopping it from adding onto its very successful totals. The first film on the comic hero pulled in another $7.5 mil on its 2,931 theaters this weekend. In 38 days of release, “Iron” leads the way with a domestic haul of $288.8 mil from audiences. As you see above, Indy’s got a chance for it as well and seeing how they’re both from Paramount, I don’t the studio minds which film wins in the end. Counting last weekend’s foreign gross mark of $241.4 mil, the film has a worldwide gross of $530.3 mil.

Things aren’t looking as rosy for Disney’s The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. While the distributor’s CEO has already admitted putting out the sequel in May wasn’t a wise move, it could also be said that giving the film a $200 mil budget can’t be seen as too logical either. In 4 weeks of release, the film still has quite a way to go before it reaches its budget mark. At the moment, it’s sitting at the $125.8 mil mark since it pulled in another $5.5 mil this weekend. If you count the sequel’s foreign numbers, they’re at exactly $200.0 mil but that doesn’t say much. Most studios hope to get their budgets by domestic numbers at least that may be just a bit too much to expect at this point.

The time has come for What Happens in Vegas to get the final brutal laugh on its competition Speed Racer. Both films have been managing to compete since debuting on the same weekend 5 weeks ago with Vegas always being one slot ahead of its counterpart. This weekend, however, Vegas stays in the top 10 while Speed can’t, opting instead for 13th place. Vegas took another $3.4 mil from audiences this weekend on its 2,366 theaters across the nation. Fox kept the budget low at $35 mil so it’s $72.2 domestic gross makes it a success for the studio. Obviously not as good as Fox’s Dr. Seuss but we’re talking very big differences in demographics and Fox had some major competition this May. They’re likely happy with what they have here.

Same goes for Universal and their Tina Fey-led Baby Mama still managing to find its way into the top 10 after 7 weeks at the box office. Clearly, couples are enjoying the alternative here though its reaching the final days now. This weekend, it only pulled in another $779,000, a sign that its reaching its final days. Of course, it’s only showing on 992 theaters now so that’s another example of its run ending. Overall, with a budget of $30 mil, the film has grossed $57.9 mil domestically.

The final film at the box office is another film ending its run, Sony’s Made of Honor. The Patrick Dempsey-led couple movie is only showing on 740 theaters after 6 weeks at the box office but still managed to pull in another $775,000 this weekend at the box office. With a budget set at $40 mil, it now has a domestic gross of $44.6 mil.

I'll probably see both The Incredible Hulk and The Happening this weekend. If I only have time to see one it'll be Hulk. I think Hulk will take in $85 million over the weekend and The Happening will pull in about $25 million.

The kids didn't want to see Kung-Fu Panda (thank god), opting for a day at the pool, mini-golf and pizza instead. I stayed away from Zohan (just didn't look at all funny to me), but went to a matinee of The Strangers this afternoon. Pretty decent thriller/horror and worth a matinee viewing.

We were all pretty much on the nose with Sex on the City going south in its second weekend.

How can there be any talk of a Speed Racer sequel when the first movie has tanked this badly?

Yeah this was as expected. I will see both movies next weekend. I will take my son to Incredble Hulk and a date to The Happening... I'm really pumped for both of them. Wish one of them would have come out this weekend, maybe if one of them did I wouldn't be doctoring a sun burn. LOL

No, no, no. I want to make the hair silky smooth!!!!!!!

Zohan was a wait for video flick in my opinion. I thought it'd be funnier, it had some funny parts, couple of the usual cameos.

I'm definitely checking out the Hulk next weekend, I think The Happening will get lost and land at #4. Hulk, Panda, Zohan, Shaymalan, that's my prediction.

Agreed Wes, “The Strangers” was decent for a matinee. I am surprised Prince Caspain is not doing better. I thought it was pretty good for what it is and should be doing better. Plus I am kind of irked, I know a lot of people (friends with kids and young nephews and nieces) who keep bitching about the lack of family friendly fantasy and such not being out there from Hollywood and this comes along and they all sit at home still.

I stayed away from the theater this weekend, but next weekend. As a fathers day present we are going to The Happening. But as a fathers day gift to myslef I will be staying for The Hulk. I can't wait to see Tony Stark (again) and judging from that TV Spot he has more than just a cameo.

Hanso, that a pretty good prediction. I think it will beat out Zohan though. But for The Happening to come in 2nd it will have to get at least 30 or 40 million which doesn't seem likely. But it is the first big R rated summer movie so far (I believe) so maybe it will bring out a different audience. It will also depend on the reviews for the people on the fence. But I'm fucking there. Does anyone know the budget of The Happening? It does look very promising though, I've been stoked about it ever since I saw that RedBand trailer for it...If you guys haven't seen YouYube it.

My money supported "Panda" last week. Definitively targeted for very young viewers. Same ol' story, but cute animals and amazing backgrounds. Actually better than I expected.

On the speed racer note, if you remove all the dialogue of the "corporate bad guy" and the SpyKids type "corporate bad guy lair", it was an enjoyable movie. But with those awful things, the movie was unbearable.

And in my book, box office money does not equal good. Nobody can pay me to watch Sex & the City... and I'm a woman!!!!

Exactly how I thought it would pan out with SatC. 63% drop and Indy and the new releases jumping ahead of it, still surprised everyone with the money its pulled in.

Paramount looks to tbe the first studio to have 3 consecutive 200mil. films in a row with IM, Indy and Panda. Not bad. They're also looking to break their own record for fastest to 1 billion domestically. That will be two years in a row for them setting that mark.

I'd slow the pull out of IronMan from theaters to see if Starks' cameo in the Hulk gives IM another little boost.

If the Happening cracks the top 3 or does more than 20 mil.I'll be surprised. Just have a bad feeling about it and I read that critics' screenings weren't certain yet (usually a bad sign). And using the R rating as a selling point doesn't bode well either.

Wessmith, hope you're right about 85 mil. I'm thinking the Hulk'll be about 65 myself. I read several good reviews so hopefully people'll give it a chance.

So, I've watched and read mania silently for years, seeing everyone's comments. You all kick ass, and some of you are rather retarded, with respect of course. Now I am finally deciding to weigh in with my box office gold....and if anyone is questioning my credentials, I've managed 4 times in my life to see a movie every weekend in a year, that's 52 weekends of film, and no, those weren't repeat viewings. I hold a Masters in chewing bubble gum, and I have a Ph.D in kicking ass, and yes, I am all OUT of bubble gum. Shall we proceed?

-Kung-Fu Panda is going to bow out at no more that 115-140 million, and that's a stretch. It's stricken me as nothing more than a b-level cg film, and I would say falls short, behind the likes of "Over the Hedge" or "Madagascar" , both Dreamworks pics, if I remember correctly. it's not going to have the legs. Trust me on this one

-The Incredible Hulk will not tank and will be received handily, but it's going to be hurt by where it's at. You're going to have what looks to be great action sequences ala Jason Bourne, with f/x of an Iron Man or X-Men, and plus, admit it, you can't find a better actor than Ed Norton to play Bruce. And let's not forget Tim Roth can still be the prickiest prick in a film...Rob Roy anyone?. I'm figuring it's going to bring in at least a cool 70 million, though it could be hurt by "The Happening". Hulk is going to have a good second weekend, since Get Smart is the only major release. But once the 27th gets here, it's all about Wall-E...

-Speaking of Marky Mark, even though M. Night has had some tankers lately, this looks to along the lines of "Signs". I know it's rated-R, but it should pull a decent 35-50 million. The combination of psycho. thriller/survival story will get people int he seats. It will definitely surprise people...final take 135 mil

-Get Smart should pull down around 80-90 mil. I know everyone loves Steve , as do I, but it's not sucking me in fully, just yet. I will admit I could blow this one. Could be a sleeper.

-Wall-E. I don't think Pixar knows how to make a crappy movie. Just doesn't seem like them. That little futuro Johnny-5 is probably gonna pull in at least 285 mil, if not more. Definitely in top 5 of the summer

I'll wait until they get closer to drop opinions on the rest of the summer fare, which, guys, I must say, does not this summer seem like we have some kick ass movies coming out?

B.O. Predictions-top 10

1-TDK.....................................330+

2-Wall-E..................................315+

3-Iron Man(yes already came out I know)...310+

4-Indiana Jones...........................290+

5-HellBoy2................................250+

6-Hancock.................................225+

7-Incredible Hulk.........................190+

8-Tropic Thunder..........................175+

9-The Mummy3..............................165+

10-X-Files2...............................140+

*honorable mentions include Step-Brothers & Pineapple Express. These two could easily hit the 9th or 10th spot, and replace the aforementioned....

Game over, man! Game over!

I saw Kung Fu Panda over the weekend. It's pretty funny for kids and adults. Nice voice cast too. Jackie Chan as monkey fu was even good, I did not even recognize his bad English voice. The action was pretty good too being at PG level. The escape scene from the prison was pretty intense.

There is a small, no big deal scene at end of credits with Panda sitting next to a tree with his master.

almostunbiased • Jun 09, 2008, 06:19am •
I'm seeing Kung Fu today with the whole family, I'll see Hulk this Friday for sure. Zohan was a pass for me. His movies are always rentals in my book. He's not unfunny, he just isn't worth the big bucks in my opinion.

The Happening looks good, but I'll be skipping that one and probably rent.

Oh and MovieGuy, I made a top ten about a month ago and nobody wanted to do it I guess.
Still here was mine again:
1. Wall E
2. Indiana Jones
3. The Chronicles of Narnia
4. Hancock
5. The Dark Night
6. Kung Fu Panda
7. Iron Man
8. The mummy Returns
9. The incredible Hulk
10. Hell Boy 0r Space Chimp or Journey to the Center of the Earth orStep Brothers or X-Files or The Love Guru or The Happening or Get Smart or Wanted or Speed Racer or

I got a little vague there at the end, and after seeing some of these I'd probably cahnge my mind now, but oh well this is what I picked early May.
