Although figures fell slightly short of Monday's estimates, it was still a good weekend at the box office for science fiction, horror and fantasy films. As predicted, What Lies Beneath was on top, with $29.70-million, about $400,000 shy of expectations. X-Men was in 2nd place on its second weekend of release, earning $23.47-million, $200,000 less than Fox's Monday estimates. Despite a 57% drop in revenues from its debut, the film had earned $99.32-million by the Sunday, and passed the $100-million mark shortly thereafter. In 3rd place, Pokemon 2000 made its debut with $19.58-million. In the biggest gap between estimates and final figures, the film fell near $2-million short of the $21.5-million predicted by Warner Bros. In 4th place, Scry Movie earned $15.12-million, slightly ahead of Miramax's Monday estimates. The film's total now stands at $116.43-million.
Also in the Top Ten were two genre holdovers: The Kid and Chicken Run. The Disney fantasy-comedy pulled in $6.69-million, upping its ante to $42.33-million. The DreamWorks stop-motion film ran down $4.60-million, raising its total to $85.99-million. The only other genre film to pull in over $1-million during the weekend was the perennial Mission Impossible II, which added $1.27-million to its cumulative U.S. gross of $209.90-million.
Below are the final results for the weekend's Top Ten Box Office Winners, along with any other genre films to place in the Top Sixty:
