Box Office Finals: MI2 Barely Edges out BIG MOMMA for 2nd Place.
By Steve Biodrowski

The weekend of June 9 to 11 earned a total of $99.1-million, down 5% from the previous weekend and down 18% from the same weekend last year. There was no change to the order of the Top 10 listing once the final tallies were in, but the race for 2nd place was much closer that predicted, with MISSION IMPOSSIBLE II ($17.23-million)barely edging out BIG MOMMA'S HOUSE ($17.22-million). Besides MI2, the only other genre films in the Top 10 were DINOSAUR (just ahead of estimates with $8.83-million) and FREQUENCY (just shy of estimates with $1.45-million). Disney's CGI prehistoric fantasy has surpassed $110-million, but it has a way to go to meet TARZAN's $170-million from last year, and it will face stiff competition in the upcoming weeks from Fox's TITAN A.E. and Disney's own FANTASIA 2000, not to mention DreamWorks' CHICKEN RUN.
Farther down the chart, at #46 BATTLEFIELD EARTH's total stands at just over $21-million after a month in release, making the film an even bigger box office disappointing than MISSION TO MARS (#43), which finally passed the $60-million mark. And SCREAM 3, in 59th place, with a total of over $89-million seems unlikely to reach the $100-million mark passed by its predecessor, unless Dimension engineers a major re-release.
Below are the final tallies for the Top 10 films, plus the reamining science fiction, horror, and fantasy films to rank on the weekend box office chart. The first figure represents the weekend take; the second figure is the film's total gross to date.
