Box Office Finals: PITCH BLACK Still Top Genre Film

Once again, the top genre film at the box office was PITCH BLACK, which narrowly beat out SNOW DAY for 5th place; the film took in $5.07-million. Otherwise, the weekend box office was dominated by non-genre films: the top four titles were THE WHOLE NINE YARDS, THE NEXT BEST THING, MY DOG SKIP, and DROWNING MONA. The only other even borderland genre film to make the Top 10 was AMERICAN BEAUTY, which held onto the #9 position, with $4.03-million. (just slightly under yesterday's estimates). With a total of $93-million, the film seems poised to pass $100-million before the Oscars, where a likely win for Best Picture could send it even higher.

A handful of genre films landed in the Top 20. THE TIGGER MOVIE took 13th position with $3.62-million. WHAT PLANET ARE YOU FROM? made a disappointing debut at #14, with $3.00-million. In 15th place was SCREAM 3, which added $2.86 to send its total north of $82-million. Still in limited Imax engagements, FANTASIA 2000 took in another $1.45-million, landing in the #18 berth. THE SIXTH SENSE, in 19th place, added $1.19-million to its $285-million total; a few Oscar wins should send the film well above $300-million. And at #20, THE GREEN MILE managed another $1.09-million.
