Weekend estimates published by Box Office Mojo show that 'The Incredible Hulk' is still rampaging, but doesn't quite have the legs of 'Iron Man'.
'Hulk' dropped two spots to #3, with 'Kung Fu Panda' just barely edging the #2 position, and the newbie 'Get Smart' claiming #1. The film did upset the new Mike Meyers start 'The Love Guru', which placed a distant #4.
Jade Jaws' film took in another $21.557 million this weekend, bringing its domestic total to $96.5 million. Word of mouth on 'Incredible Hulk' has been postitive and last week's #1 start had many declaring victory at redeeming Marvel's rep after the disappointing 'Hulk' of five years ago.
But do the numbers support the perception?
The previous (and less expensive) 'Hulk' had collected $100.6 million by the end of its second week, doing slightly better box office than the current. However, it's important to note that that film ran on about 100 more screens. Further, its second week saw a more precipitous drop -- almost 70% -- than the current movie, and it only collected about $19 million.
So, while 'Incredible Hulk' doesn't have a clear triumph over its predecessor, it seems likely that it'll outpace the previous film in the long run.
'Iron Man', on the other hand, is an unqualified smash. After two months in release, the movie is still in the top 10, ranking #9 this week. Its domestic tally is now about $304.8 million.
This week the Marvel movies face competition from a competing comic film, 'Wanted'.
