Samuel L. Jackson, Patrick Wilson and Sony Screen Gems find themselves taking the top spot with their debuting thriller Lakeview Terrace. The film, which features Sam as a neighbor gone wrong, opened up in 2,464 theaters this weekend and wound up grossing $15.6 mil as a result. This points to an average rate of $6,331 per showing with audiences around the country. Screen Gems has always been good at managing their budgets, keeping them low and grabbing profits as a result. “Lakeview” is no different with a budget of only $20 mil, which guarantees their latest thriller as a success.
Focus Features and the Oscar Winning Coen brothers are following in second place for this report with their latest film Burn After Reading dropping a slot to 2nd place with a $11.2 mil payday. This one can also be considered a success since the brothers kept the budget down to $37 mil and it has already grossed $36.4 mil in ten days of release.
Lions Gate Films take the 3rd slot romantic comedy My Best Friend’s Girl debuting in 2,604 theaters this weekend and cashing in $8.3 mil in receipts. Like Screen Gems, Lions Gate likes to keep their budgets tight and this one wound up costing them only $20 mil to finance, which suggests that this kind of opening isn’t bad at all for the distributor.
A lot of debuts this weekend. MGM and The Weinstein Company also debuted their animation Igor into theaters this weekend and found the 4th place by grossing $8.0 million. Since the studio debuted it in 2,339 theaters, this has it with an average rate of $3,425 per showing for audiences in this report. The budget is set at $30 mil.
Overture Films isn’t finding the success they likely expected with their thriller Righteous Kill. A film starring Robert De Niro and Al Pacino as partners debuted in 3rd place last weekend and took the 5th place slot for its second box office report. It grabbed another $7.7 million, making its domestic total $28.3 million after ten days of release. The budget is set $60 mil.
Tyler Perry and Lions Gate grabbed the 6th place in its second weekend with Tyler Perry’s The Family That Preys. This has it dropping 4 slots and 56% over the course of a week by grossing another $7.5 mil. Still, Tyler Perry likes to keep his budgets low and while we don’t have an exact number for this particular project, a $28.3 million domestic gross after only 10 days is likely another success for the producer-director.
Picturehouse has a small success on their hands with their female-focused feature The Women. The film took in another $5.3 mil in its second weekend and has grossed $19.2 million in ten days of release. Not bad at all for a film that cost only $16 mil to produce.
And the final debuting movie for this report is Ricky Gervais’ fantasy comedy Ghost Town taking the 8th place with a $5.1 mil payday. Out of all the debuting films, this was the least distributed with it only getting into 1,505 theaters so this means it had the fourth highest average at $3,436 per showing. The budget is set at only $20 mil.
We’re approaching the final weeks of box office discussion for Warner Bros.’ top performing The Dark Knight, the reigning champion of 2008 and 2nd highest blockbuster of all time. The film took in another $2.9 million while still getting shown in 1,905 theaters across the nation. It’s getting very close to the worldwide billion mark but there’s a question as to whether it can get there before it’s pulled out of theaters. At the moment, the Nolan-directed Bats sequel has a domestic total of $521.9 mil and a foreign mark of $449.1 million, which means its current worldwide gross is sitting at $971.0 mil. WB executives and fans are likely going to have to wait for the re-release in January before seeing the film hit the $600 mil domestically and $1 billion worldwide.
And taking the final 10th place for this report is Sony Pictures’ successful The House Bunny. The comedy grabbed another $2.8 million on its 2,675 theaters across the nation. In five weekends of release, the film has grossed $45.7 million domestically while getting produced on a budget of only $25 mil.

Dude, Burn After Reading rocks to absolution. Go see it.

Another weekend I don't go to the movies. I shall make my return next weekend to check out Eagle Eye.

First week I don't go to the movies since april. Lakeview just looked too generic and I hate Dane Cook and Kate Hudson's pancake face. Jarrod, my condelences. May the Chiefs rest in peace. They're officially the worst team in the league.

I know... As I said in our Sports forum at the Mania messageboards, I'm almost happy that I was without power last weekend because it meant I didn't see the Chiefs lose at HOME against the Raiders. Losing against the Raiders is bad enough...losing at HOME? Ouch... And today, I was just laughing... Larry Johnson, the whiny butthead, got his TD...but that's about the only highlight from that game.
WISEGUY562 9/21/2008 2:57:00 PM
I think we need to declare Missouri a National Disaster Area. With the Rams and Chiefs to blame.
JarrodSarafin 9/21/2008 3:04:20 PM
Hahah. So true, Wise. I'm more surprised about the Niners...They did the right thing by bringing in an Irish QB. My brother in law just called me and said... "Hey, I may be switching to the Chiefs." I was laughing at that and asked "Why?" B-i-L: "Because I'm used to losing!" At least, watching his Niners do good this season is a highlight for me. And of course, listening to my sister go on and on about her Cowboys...29 years of listening to the Cowboys (first, with my father and now with my sister...Argh..) Box office may suck this month but plenty of football discussion.

J, maybe I'm too dense but I can't figure out how to post on the forums. I tried to comment several times but I always get a message saying I'm not allowed. I'm registered as far as I know but nothing.

Don't get carried away with SF. Beating Seatle and Detroit not necceasarily a sign of a good team, at least not this year. Jury is still out.

I feel your pain as far as Cowboys and their fans go. Makes me want to puke seeing them do so well. Especially painful for me since I'm a Redskin fan and we have them next week. I may make a trip or two to church to pray for a victory.
