Box Office: PAYNE Takes Down the Chihuahua

By Jarrod Sarafin October 19, 2008

So, could Disney’s Beverly Hills Chihuahua do it again for a third weekend in a row? Well, judging by the tickets the film was selling on Saturday in some theaters, it looked possible for the house that Mickey built. Unfortunately for those talking dogs, Max Payne jumped out ahead of everyone on Friday with a 2-1 margin pulling in an estimated $7.1 million. This would give it the advantage to win outright this weekend with a total haul of $18.0 million for 20th Century Fox. Not a bad opening for Fox considering the budget is set at just $35 mil. They have half their money back after only three days in theaters.
Meanwhile, Beverly Hills Chihuahua drops to 2nd place by pulling in another $11.2 million on its 3,239 theaters across the country. While Disney has released no budget to the media, the film has grossed $69.0 million after 17 days at the box office. And the studio won’t be in second place for long with their next film High School Musical 3 likely ready to clean up at the box office next weekend. As I’ll say again below, who needs horror movies in this spooky festive season when you have talking dogs and singing teenagers? That’s Disney’s motto and it seems to be working.
Fox won the top spot and it’s indie branch Fox Searchlight grabbed the 3rd place by debuting The Secret Life of Bees. The Queen Latifah-Dakota Fanning drama entered the box office in only 1,591 theaters this weekend but still managed an $11.0 mil haul. This means the film had the highest average of the top 10 with audiences paying $6,945 per showing. It also means the studio has their budget back since that was set at only $11 mil. Basically, Fox had a good weekend. Half of its budget back with Max and all of its budget back with Bees.
Lionsgate and Oliver Stone didn’t too shabby with their W. flick taking the 4th place mark by grabbing $10.5 million. Political-motivated movies seem to be as dangerous as middle-east-motivated movies so there was some question as to whether this would bomb out of the box office. But bringing in $10.5 million over its first three days in 2,030 theaters isn’t too bad. Not when the film only cost $25.1 mil.
The now split Paramount and DreamWorks also reached their budget lines this weekend with D.J. Caruso’s Eagle Eye bringing in an estimated $7.3 million. The fourth weekend’s tally means it has a domestic gross of $81.3 million against a budget of $80 million.
Warner Bros. may be in some trouble with their Ridley Scott drama Body of Lies. After two weekends, the film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe is already down to 6th place with a weekend haul of only $6.8 million. Not a very good position to be considering its weak debut performance last weekend. At this point, it has a domestic gross of $24.4 million while the budget is still farther down the road to the tune of $70 million.
Screen Gems also had Quarantine drop to 7th place in its second weekend but they have nothing to worry about. As usual, Sony’s genre branch played it smart with a low budget of only $12 million. This means that with this weekend’s $6.3 million, the film now has a domestic gross of $24.6 million after only 10 days in release. Doubled their budget already and still going.
Likewise, Sony also has nothing to worry about with Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist taking 8th place with an estimated $3.9 million in sales. After three weekends at the box office, the teen-focused film has a domestic gross of $26.7 million. Not bad at all considering that Sony produced it for only $10 million. Like Fox, Sony is doing just fine in October.
Summit Entertainment missed with Sex Drive though. The film debuted this weekend with a respectable 2,421 theater total but still found itself in 9th place with only $3.5 million to show for it. By next weekend, it could be out of the top 10 altogether and that’s not good for a film costing $19 million to make. Still, with the way DVD sales are these days, it could end up eventually getting them over the budget mark.
And the final 10th place goes to the fading romantic rendezvous between Richard Gere and Diane Lane, their second such effort after Unfaithful. Nights in Rodanthe pulled in another $2.6 million on 2,115 theaters across the country. After four weekends, the film has a domestic gross of $36.8 million. No budget has been released but it likely isn’t very high.

Halloween is approaching so Saw V or Tim Burton’s re-release of The Nightmare Before Christmas will be the top film next weekend, right?
No.
Not a chance.
Not with Disney’s High School Musical 3: Senior Year already selling out its Friday shows a week before the film even hits theaters. And not when some actual High Schools are actually booking whole auditoriums for “special showings” as we have heard over the past day.
Horror movies against Disney around the Halloween holiday? Disney will win of course. Between last year’s The Game Plan doing well and this year having Beverly Hills Chihuahua and High School Musical 3 control the box office, Disney has taken over the month of October.

Friday October 24, 2008 Releases:
Wide
High School Musical 3: Senior Year (3,400+ theaters)
Saw V (2,800+ theaters)
Pride & Glory (2,600+ theaters)
Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas in 3-D
Limited

Fear(s) of the Dark

Roadside Romeo

Not surprised by this weekends results. Payne and W supposedly performed the way the studios expected so I guess that's not too bad.

Payne, I thought was terrible. It seemed to be going for a quasi SinCity look, which actually looked good with a "noirish" style. But that was the only redeeming quality of the film. If the film had been rated R and had some nudity and bloody violence at least it would've added some eye candy and added a level of authenticity IMO. But by going for a pg13 rating it comes across as a wannabe. Not to mention that the story wasn't fleshed out enough and some of the characters seem like they didn't belong, like the guy warning Mona to stay away from Payne with his talk of God and the devil's army, Kunis as an assasin was comical she looked like she didn't even know how to hold a weapon properly. Another property with potential squandered partially to appease the kiddies and lazy writing. Quarantine was pretty enjoyable. Reminded me a bit of 28Days mixed with The Descent. Really liked this one, just when you think zombies are played we get hit with a nice addition to the genre. If you want to call it a zombie movie that is.

May catch Saw V by default next week after I see Pride and Glory. Like Norton's movies but find Farrell hard to watch. Hopefully the Changeling will be playing at my local if not it goes wide in 2 weeks, looking forward to that. Clint has been on point with all his directorials.

Booooooooo Max Payne & the Vulture People!! BOooooooooooo!!!!

Yo Wise, tell me about the vulture people.
Of course the film should've been rated R, any damn fool but the people who made the movie could've realized this. Kunis doesn't belong in Max Payne. Marky Mark is wack! Let's hope he can do some good work when he stars as Micky Ward in The Fighter.

btw, did you see Bernard Hopkins take that young lion to school yesterday? Dayyyyyyyyyyum. Dude still got it at 43 yrs old. I thought he would lose on the cards but that was an awesome performance. Dude one of the best I've ever seen man and I aint even a big fan of his.

WISEGUY562 10/19/2008 3:39:25 PM

I think you know all there is to know from that interview, they're hallucinations. And you maybe get two decent quick views of them all else is mostly shadows of the hallucinations. I think they're there mostly for the commercial to draw people in out of curiosity.

Can you believe Hopkins got a decision? I'm glad I didn't pay for that cause I would've been mad as hell. By all accounts he really earned it and took Pavlik to school. I'm repeating what you said. I don't see it on the HBO's schedule for next week. Friday night Showtime has a good card, Bute/Andrade, Hearns/Clavette plus a couple more I think. Did you see the Hopkins fight? I thought you were skipping it.

Crap, I see High School Musical is coming out. My kids will want to see that. I haven't seen a movie since August and I have to go see that. Why me?

I still want to see Eagle Eye, but I bet the next movie I go see will be Bond.

hanso 10/19/2008 4:24:43 PM

Man don't be tryin to blame yo kids, you know you want to see HSM3.

My next visit will be for Zack & Miri. I want to see The Changeling but I don't like watching dramas at the movies. Redskins suckas! Buwahaha.

Wise, check your profile.

WISEGUY562 10/19/2008 5:13:54 PM

hanso, You just want to see Seth Rogen naked, admit it :) Zack and Miri does look funny but so did Pineapple Express, thank God for Danny McBride, the movies only saving grace.

You won't see Changeling cause you scared of crying in public, right? Be honest now

Changeling and Rocknrolla are the two films I really want to see, they both go wide in 2 weeks. But I'll probably see Z&M, Pride & Glory and SawV. Man I have way too much time on my hands.
Ditto on the REDSKINS baby. Cowgirls suck

hanso 10/19/2008 5:53:28 PM

You disgusting Wise. I do shed a tear everytime I hear Jolie scream "I...WANT...MYYYYY....SON BACK!!"

Almost, what you gotta do is, look up the naked pics from the chic of HSM, then when you watch the movie just picture her naked.

needaname04 10/19/2008 7:29:12 PM

Saw V Saw V Saw V Saw V Saw V Saw V Saw V Saw V Saw V Saw V

Screw HSM 3 for ruining the complete series being #1 for all five movies. It should still do pretty respectable though.

The previews say "You won't believe how it Ends." Anybody buy that??? I would like to think so, but it's all going to depend on how the 5th one ends and if there are no looose ends. I hope they don't keep going. For the hardcore fans like myself I'm absolutly looking forward to next Friday and hope they don't keep it going for some shit reason!!!!!!!
