Box Office: Scott's Lies, Quarantine Defeated by Disney's CHIHUAHUA

By: Jarrod Sarafin
Date: Sunday, October 12, 2008

I honestly didn’t expect to be talking about a Beverly Hills Chihuahua again in this weekend’s box office report. Not with the highly marketed horror Quarantine and definitely not with Ridley Scott’s thriller Body of Lies hitting theaters. Apparently, I was wrong for assuming those two could beat the Chihuahua and Disney was correct in their strategy of family comes first in October. They seem to know something after they banked last year with the family-focused Game Plan scored some victories this time last year and now they’re repeating the success again this year. With its $17.5 mil victory this weekend, the film has pulled in a domestic tally of $52.5 million after ten days of release. No budget has been released but one would think that it was lower than the current tally.
Following in second place for the weekend is the Jennifer Carpenter-led horror remake Quarantine with a $14.2 million debut. As always, Sony Screen Gems played smart and kept their budget low to the tune of only $12 million. This has the film looking towards the profit lines after just three days of release. Screen Gems always seem to do right by their budget-release strategies.
The same cannot be said for Warner Bros. and Ridley Scott’s Body of Lies. You would think that a film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe would be a sure bet for Scott and the WB. But apparently, that’s just wrong this time around. The thriller pulled in only $13.1 million in its debut, not a good opening for a film that has a price tag of $70 million. Apparently, there’s some bad mojo about middle-eastern government thrillers in October these past two years. Peter Berg’s The Kingdom didn’t exactly break the bank last year this time. Disney also knocked that one down with The Game Plan. History repeats itself here this year.
Paramount, DreamWorks and director D.J. Caruso are nearing their budget line after three weekends at the box office. Eagle Eye lands in 4th place with a $11.0 mil haul while showing in 3,614 theaters. The studio set the price tag at $80 million and it currently has a domestic gross of $70.5 million. It should be over the line after next weekend unless a major drop happens between now and then.
Sony also has nothing to fear with their teen-focused comedy Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist. The film may have dropped two places to fifth place in its second weekend by pulling in $6.5 million but the studio kept the budget very low, with it only costing $10 million to make. It already has $20.8 million in domestic sales after ten days of release.
Universal can’t say the same positives for their sports tale The Express. They released the 40-million budgeted film in 2,808 theaters and only have $4.7 million to show for it. Not a good start at all for the production or the studio.
Meanwhile, Warner Bros. and the reuniting of Richard Gere/Diane Lane managed to stay in the top 10 for third consecutive weekend. The romantic fare Nights in Rodanthe pulled in another $4.6 million this weekend and now has domestic gross of $32.3 million. No budget has been released yet.
Warner Bros. and New Line expanded their Viggo Mortensen and Ed Harris western Appaloosa into 245 more theaters this weekend and found the 8th spot as a result. The film pulled in another $3.3 million on 1,290 theaters around the country. If they continue to expand it, they could get the box office sales over the estimated $20 million price tag. At the current time, it has a domestic gross of $10.8 million.
Paramount Vantage also expanded their limited release The Duchess into 1,080 more theaters this weekend and found the 9th place with a $3.3 million result. In four weekends of domestic release, the film has pulled in $5.5 million in sales.
Taking the final 10th place is the final debuting film of this weekend, 20th Century Fox’s City of Ember. Not sure why Fox has been so quiet about this film in terms of marketing and debuted the film in only 2,022 theaters but they have and so the studio only managed $3.2 million as a result. Not a good opening or a good release strategy for a film costing $38 million to make.

Well, will I be talking about the Beverly Hills Chihuahua again next weekend. One would think not with Fox releasing Max Payne on 3,200 theaters next weekend but then again, I didn’t expect the Disney dog to beat Ridley Scott or Quarantine.
October may becoming the month of family Disney films. Not Halloween-minded horror films or serious-minded thrillers.
Who knows? Let’s look at what’s coming to theaters next weekend.
Friday October 17, 2008 Releases:
Wide
Max Payne (3,200 theaters)
Sex Drive (2,400 theaters)
W. (2,000 theaters)
The Secret Life of Bees (1,400 theaters)

Limited
What Just Happened?
Morning Light
The Elephant King
Filth and Wisdom

Maybe America gets its middle-eastern thriller "fix" by watching the nightly news.

I caught Body of Lies. It was alright, I thought it would have more action and that Crowe would be in it more but he wasnt. I don't know why but when I saw the movie the theatre was packed with old people.
Dicaprio needs to be cast in a super hero flick.

I hope the Chihuahuas win next weekend also cause Max Payne is gonna be shit!! Boo, PG 13 Max Payne & The Vulture People, Booooooooooooooo!!!

City of Ember at $3,200,000? I'm responsible for .000345% of that? How degrading! Kind of awesome how bad it was, though. *Spoiler Alert* At the end of the movie, the protagonists thought it would be a good idea to blindly drop a rock with a note attached from about a mile above the city, potentially hitting any number of people they still cared about. At an earlier point, a giant mutant rat was capable of breaking through about three feet of solid concrete but then unable to get out from under a small, wooden book case.

I actually went and watched Quarantine. Although an ok movie, don't go in thinking this movie is going to be original. I just got one word for you peeps...Rabbies!....

No wonder our economy is going into the tank -- we're putting all our money into the bottomless pit of abysmal filmaking that is "Chihuahas!"

Why, America? Why?

This has to be the real reason the world hates us.

I saw "City of Ember" too, and thought it was half-decent for what it was: basically an adaptation of a juvenile/young adult fantasy novel about a dystopia. There's a lot of suspension of disbelief needed, but certainly no more than this summer's "Journey to the Center of the Earth," for instance. Overall I thought it worked for its target audience as both an adventure story and allegory of life under a broken and corrupt government.

***SPOILERS*** Certainly Bill Murray's line about putting together an "investigative committee of experts" to look into the critically failing generator drew a hardy laugh among the adults in my audience who have heard this too many times from our own "leaders" recently. And for the record, the creature was not a giant mutated rat, but a giant star-nosed mole - look it up, they're nasty looking little critters. ***END SPOILERS***

Hey Jarrod, what happened to the Mania staff reviews of current theatrical releases? There hasn't been a new review since Babylon A.D. on Labor Day weekend. Having seen that movie myself, I can understand their reluctance to go back into the theaters... but since then we've had a number of genre movies including City of Ember, Quarantine, Blindness, Igor, and Ghost Town. What gives?

I'm still trying to get over my Redskins losing to the lowly Rams. At least the Cowgirls lost too, that always alleviates the pain a little.

I caught the Chihuahuas last week, it was ok but it is strictly a kids movie.

I am surprised Crowe and DiCaprio's star power didn't push them over the top to win the weekend. Body of Lies was pretty good. It's a very nice thriller with its tense moments. I wasn't expecting action from this.

Who really thought that the Chihuahuas and Quarantine would beat out Body of Lies? I may check that out during the week.

Maxi Pad is my top choice next week.
I hope W bombs the way he has during his time in office. Going to see this would be like going to see a Clinton biopic by Rush Limbaugh. You know is going to be full of half truths, exaggerations and lies.

I'm just looking forward to the Changeling and Rocknrolla as far as this month is concerned.
Don't really care for the Seth Rogen flick, I'm tired of his flabby ass. Oh wait a minute, there's the possibility of E.Banks showing some skin, ok I MAY check it out.

Looks like Eagle will limp in for making budget. Damn!!! Next time Shita...next time...too bad South Park did not do an Indy special on Shita's role in movie also. Maybe he will merit a solo ep on how bad he sucks ass.

Dazzler, you never cease to amaze me during one of your Shia rants. Now if only you could do soundbites about it. I like Shia a hair better than you, but at times he does make you wanna strangle him and buzz cut his cherished hair.

Meanwhile I'll be catching QUARANTINE on Tuesday. As far as BODY OF LIES goes....it looks good, but to me it seems more fitting of a summer release than an October release because actioners generally don't do too hot during this time of the month.

And don't EVEN get me started with CHIHUAHUAS. I moaned and groaned along with other people when I first saw the trailer during IRONMAN at the theaters. But hey...appearently has done a better job as opposed to last year's atrocity that was UNDERDOG.

*City of Ember SPOILER ALERT*
Alright, snally, it was a giant star-nosed mole. Ah, here we go. It says here on wikipedia that the giant star-nosed mole has a +15 attack against concrete, but receives -5 dexterity and -10 strength against wooden book shelves. Well, that clears that up.

Again, for all I enjoyed it, CIty was a terrible movie (even for kids). The main girl seriously thought the "builders" would make the way to escape the city easy (and continued to believe this after everything they had to go through). The builders, in fact, were had a great sense of humor for how to escape.
