TROPIC THUNDER remained at the top of the box office with $16.1 million in ticket sales. It beat out new comer THE HOUSE BUNNY, which brought in $15.1 million.

Universal's DEATH RACE came in third with just $12.3 million and THE DARK KNIGHT took the number four spot with $10.3 million.
And in the number five spot was STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS with $5.7 million.

Other films opening this weekend included MGM's THE LONGSHOTS which took 8th with $4.3 million and 20th Century Fox's THE ROCKER starring Rainn Wilson which came in 12th with only $2.75 million.

Update: Thanks for filling in for me, fellow Editor! Hey Maniacs, sorry for the brief alternate during the day. Had a family get together and a very loud Linkin Park concert on the agenda Sunday. Now, the overly sun-burned and voice stricken Jarrod will put up the chart and the closing Summer totals.

School is back in session around the country. It’s a time when our weekly box office reports will become a bit boring and downright less suspenseful in the numbers game. But we can now look back and see the winners and the losers for this summer season. The one with the big “L” attached is obviously Speed Racer, a big production for Warner Bros. that failed horribly in translating from 60’s anime icon to 2000’s film treatment.
But Warner Bros. executives were all smiles shortly thereafter with their massive All-Time Record breaking sequel, The Dark Knight. Nolan may not have broke the bank with the first film but his second installment can buy a few banks outright as the film is still in the top 5 this weekend and nearing the $500 mil domestic mark.
Paramount and DreamWorks are the true champions of 2008 though. They kicked some major box office butt with their three tent poles Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Iron Man and Kung Fu Panda landing in the #2, #3 and #4 spots for 2008’s Highest Worldwide Grossing Films. Combined, those films grossed 1.9 billion dollars in theaters around the globe.
Disney didn’t do themselves any favors by pushing The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian out of its December 2007 release and into May 2008. Their domestic numbers for the sequel was poor but their international numbers made up some territory the following two months.
Universal Pictures likewise didn’t bank as much as expected with The Incredible Hulk, Hellboy II: The Golden Army and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. It should be noted though that executives called the latest Hulk a success in their eyes and The Mummy is nearing the $100 mil mark. Not to mention The Mummy is pulling in even better numbers in oversea markets. The studio also had a success with their launch of Wanted and incredible numbers with their musical Mammia Mia! In fact, the musical is their most profitable venture of the summer. So, Universal Pictures may not have had massive box office numbers with their properties as compared to Warner Bros. and Paramount but the studio isn’t in dire shape by any means.

Let’s look at those overall numbers for Summer 2008 Tent Poles:
The Dark Knight Numbers:

And that will do it for another summer box office season. The Dark Knight is victorious while Paramount owns the next three slots on the list. Universal is in the middle and Speed Racer is last. (Tropic Thunder just came out so I’m not including it as the final spot knowing it will elevate itself above Speed by next weekend.)
So, are we going to see a repeat of what we saw at the end of January, Maniacs? As many as you will remember, we saw a genre movie (Rambo) get torn up in its debut weekend against the likes of a routine spoof movie (Meet the Spartans).
This weekend, we have a sci-fi adventure called Babylon A.D. starring Vin Diesel against yet another spoof movie called Disaster Movie, a film which is spoofing source material little more than a month old.
What will it be, audiences?

Friday August 29, 2008 Releases:

Box Office Report Lite?

Mania. You really need to tone down your web page. I have a super computer and it takes about 10 seconds for a page to open up because you have all this crap on it. It's even worse with my work computer. Anyways.... Summer is coming to an end...as far as huge money makers go. Nothing really surprising though I was personally interested in seeing how Death Race would do. Next up, you have the Vin Babylon movie out next week. I just finished the book this last week and really enjoyed it...I have a feeling I'm going to regret reading it first because movies never live up to a book but I'll still see it. Other than that anyone have any guess as to the next HUGE movie coming up?
hanso 8/24/2008 4:59:10 PM
I do, it's called Quantum of Solace. WTF, did anyone read last week's EW? It has a spoiler regarding QoS and didn't say nothing about it. Or maybe I didn't know about it and everyone else knows. Anyway ********Spoiler******** Apparently QUANTUM is the new organization Bond will be battling a la SPECTRE. ********End Spoiler******* TDK got beat by The House Bunny? WTF!! Staying away from the movies till Eagle Eye opens up.
Flint521466 8/24/2008 5:29:36 PM
Hanso, you're NOT gonna see Traitor, Rightous Kill or Burn After Reading? They all come out before Eagle Eye and to me, personally, they all look more interesting. As for QoS, I caught that blurb in EW. They were having a hard time figuring out what Q.U.A.N.T.U.M. is going to stand for. I dig the name though. How the FUCK did House Bunny make $15 mil? Perplexing to say the least.
snallygaster 8/24/2008 5:33:16 PM
I think there's going to be two big movies (in terms of box office) during the next couple of slow months before the new Bond movie opens. The first is High School Musical 3. Keep in mind the first two movies originally aired on the Disney Channel, so this is the first theatrical opening. The HSM phenomenon keeps on chugging along quite strongly, and with the Disney promotional machine behind it, I think it's going to do the business of a fair-to-middling summer blockbuster. The second is Madagascar 2, which beats the holiday rush by a couple of weeks. It will probably rival the new Bond movie for best box office in November. Don't underestimate the power of a heavy marketing campaign combined with millions of homes with the DVD of the first movie on heavy rotation, and kids who love to sing the "Move It, Move It" song. Given the abrupt absence of a Potter flick, the holiday movie season looks like a bunch of wildcards. I think the winners (apart from Bond, which is a given) will be the 3D animated Bolt, the vampire movie Twilight, and The Day the Earth Stood Still.
hanso 8/24/2008 6:02:29 PM
Is that 3D animated Bolt film about the Jamaican guy? Flint - Yea man, I'm probably gonna miss out on those until they hit DVD. Traitor looks nice but I doubt the Mrs will wanna go see it. Burn After Reading is not something I'd go see at the movies. I had forgotten about Righteous Kill, that maybe the one I end up seeing out of those you mentioned. Maybe the House Bunny shows boobs. Only way to explain it.
almostunbiased 8/24/2008 6:10:52 PM
I think those all sound good, but I agree that Bond is the next huge movie. Madagascar will do ok though. Yeah Bolt runs faster than any cartoon dog. Did I just type that? So THE ROCKER made a whole 2.75 million opening weekend, wow, that is really bad. And Death Race got beat by the Bunny, ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Classic. I stayed home this weekend and watched a harry potter movie with my daughter and also watched The Great Raid. I'm looking forward to Miracle at Santa Anna or whatever Spikes movies called, so I popped in a WWII movie to holf me over.
WISEGUY562 8/24/2008 6:15:19 PM
Beverly Hills Chihuahua is going to own the rest of the year, SON!

hanso, TDK 6 weeks out, HB 1st weekend out. That's how it beat it. TDK'll probably top it next week.

I think there are plenty of possibly decent films coming out, just no big budget films outside of QoS and The Day the Earth Sood Still.

Bagkok Danderous, Max Payne, Punisher, Valkyrie, Spirit, Bolt, Benjamin Button, Transporter, Miracle at St Anna, City of Ember and RockNRolla.
Oh and what I'm predicting to be the biggest let down in relation to hype, Twilight.

I see Jarrod wasn't around to write the b.o. report, that's probably why it's so abbreviated. Even J deserves a day off or two. Hope all is well.
WISEGUY562 8/24/2008 6:27:39 PM
Glad to see TT repeat, best comedy of the year, ahead of Step Brothers.

Saw Death Race, it was ok. The kind of stuff you expect from Statham, fun and action filled but really not much more.

Also caught TDK for the 4th time yesterday, still not buying it. But obviously still enjoy it otherwise I would've caught House Bunny.

Today I've been watching TNT and LOTR trilogy most of the day. Best trilogy ever, bar none. And really looking forward to The Hobbit films.
hanso 8/24/2008 6:50:29 PM
No Wiseguy. House Bunny beat TDK because it probably shows boobs. TDK no boobs, it's the movie's only flaw. Might be why it doesn't beat the Titaic. Titanic had boobs. I think you may be under estimating the drawing power of boobies. You know what I saw, caught a bit of Superman Returns on HBO. Why the hell did Lex wanna create a kryptonite laced continent? I mean, sure it keeps Supes out but what about the US Army? What was he gonna do with that continent? I watched about 10-15 mins of the film towards the end and I gotta be honest, I kinda felt bad for Routh cause due to the reboot it's back to waiting tables for the poor bastard. Now that Almost mentioned Miracle on St. Anna, are there any white people in that movie? Clint's gonna be pissed. "Shut yo face!"
