It's a wild week at the box office for comic-based movies as 'Wanted' bows to impressive numbers, 'Incredible Hulk' marches on, but still can't catch its predecsessor, and 'Iron Man' finally exits the top 10.
The indie-comic adaptation 'Wanted' could not defeat Pixar's little-robot-that-could 'Wall-E', but still managed to ring up impressive sales, coming in at #2 with $51.1 million according to estimates published by Box Office Mojo. It's the first time in box office history that two first-week movies have banked over $50 million, a feat made even more impressive by the fact that the comic film is R rated.
The two films served to push 'Incredible Hulk' down three spots. That movie took in $9.2 million, bringing the three-week total up to $115.5 million. Compared to its predecessor the new-and-improved adaptation of Marvel's green giant is still an under achiever. The previous 'Hulk' had taken in $8.2 million in its third week, but had accumulated $117 million by its third week.
Of course, 'Iron Man' is still making Marvel wealthier than a billionaire playboy. That movie finally falls from the top 10, landing in the #11 spot. It made another $2.25 million bringing the domestic tally to $309 million.
