Box Sets

As the clock ticks down to the busiest shopping day of the year, I noticed that more and more box sets are starting to appear on the list of new releases. Many times these movies are not new and have been released before. Often, many of the films in “Sagas” (meaning that they have passed the trilogy mark) come in these box sets to move extra copies of lesser grossing sequels. The best example of which is the ‘Amityville, The Horror Collection’ by Fox (see Box Sets on list), where they have included separate discs for the full screen versions of ‘Amityville II: The Possession’ and ‘Amityville III: The Demon’ right along with their widescreen versions on separate discs. Talk about moving merchandise out of the warehouse. Of course, Fox doesn’t stop there with their box sets warehouse clearance. ‘The Ultimate Heroes Collection’ would seem like an ideal gift for the Superhero fan in the family except that you get the regular editions of all the Marvel Fox films except ‘Daredevil’ (which for what it was, still wasn’t better than the original release). With new versions of the originals coming out every time a sequel hits the theater they should start something where you can turn in your old DVD, pay five dollars for the new one with the bonus footage and we could just go on our merry way. Instead of feeling like we got cheated while we read columns like the DVD Shopping Bag telling us that once again they have released another version of ‘The Good The Bad and The Ugly’ or ‘The Princess Bride’.
The Return of Buyer Beware
‘Grindhouse Presents: Robert Rodriquez’s Planet Terror’ hits the shelves this week and after watching everything the DVD had to offer I discovered numerous references by Robert Rodriquez saying that he’ll put “that” on a future release or a re-release of ‘Planet Terror’. Now we all expect Special Editions and Ultimate Editions to come out sooner or later, but to have a director say that on the commentary track was not necessary. It actually upset me because we spend our hard earned money on these films only to have the copy we originally purchased become obsolete (sometimes in just a matter of months). I guess it isn’t any different than buying a computer or a cell phone. Five minutes later they are already obsolete, but gadgets and devices I can understand; not our movies.
