"The Boys" gets the Axe

According to Newsarama, the Wildstorm series, The Boys, has been canceled by DC effective with the sixth issue.

The series was the baby of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson and had been doing fairly well with regard to sales.

The Boys features a team of five super powered operatives working for a secret department of the U.S. Government.  The series constantly pushed the edge with regards to graphic violence and sexual situations, which may have been too much for DC.

"It became obvious that DC was not the right home for The Boys," said Robertson in an email to Newsarama.  "DC is being good about reverting our rights so we can find a new publisher and we're in the process of doing that now. I'm continuing to work exclusively for DC in the meantime. I want to thank Scott Dunbier and Ben Abernathy at Wildstorm for all their hard work."

You can read the Newsarama post here.

KJ's Take:  I'm sure it will find a home elsewhere and finish out it's run.  10 issues have already been solicited and with the comic selling over 25,000 copies an issue, someone will print it.

I'm actually quite surprised that DC greenlit this in the first place. This is an awesome series and I'm looking forward to the conclusion.

This book has been one of the most fun reads I've had in ages. Shame on DC for chickening out like this. Granted, the gerbil thing was a bit over the top. But it reminded me of something Bisely would do in his background art. It's all good fun when it's Lobo.

I have to agree; Simon has done a lot worse. The gerbil bit had me forcing a bit of bile down but overall, considering this is Garth Ennis, it doesn't surprise me at all. Makes me really wonder how "Preacher" will turn out on HBO.

My buddy Boz is gonna be pissed. I saw the gerbil issue a couple of weeks ago and I was shocked that DC would publish something like that. I thought it was funny but I've seen nastier shit than that in a comic.

I heard about this at Comicon this weekend in Phoenix. DC should just give up Wildstorm if it isn't ready to work with adult comics. This has been a truly fantastic book. I want so bad to get options for this to make a movie, or better yet, a series on cable! This isn't any worse than F/X or HBO with its material. I so want to make this a series!

What kills me is that they didn't think to push this to the Vertigo line. There are sooooo many adult-oriented titles on Vertigo that they should just push it over to that line. Sometimes I really wonder about Time Warner, man. More suits making the safe decisions rather than the ones best for the company. I have a feeling someone's feathers were ruffled by a lot of the crude humor. Personally, I think it's pretty fun to show these heroes as they are behind doors.

Fucking Paul Levitz and his uptight ass. Sheer brilliance on the printed page and nobody goes to bat for this book. An utter shame. When it lands at Dynamite or Avatar, I'll pick up every last issue.

I am surprised by this. DC had to know what they were getting with Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. They have a moderately successful series with established and respected creators and they decide to pull out after 6 issues? Cowardly and unprofessional behavior in my opinion. My comic tastes are becoming more and more narrowly defined. If a new series isn't published by Vertigo (Fables) or Image (The Walking Dead), I rarely look at it. Marvel only gets a few dollars a month from me for Astonishing X-Men, more out of my loyalty to Joss Whedon than interest in the Marvel universe. I get the Conan series from Dark Horse. The straight DC titles don't interest me anymore. Identity Crisis was interesting but the Crisis plot lines didn't hold enough interest for me to follow them much beyond that. Anyway, this news is a shame. But I am confident that Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson will land on their feet somewhere with The Boys under their arm as a gift to whoever has more sense than DC and Time Warner.

Also, K.J., the link to the Newsarama article is missing.

Basically this move by DC just shows they have no balls. The minute you start even suggesting, and not even suggesting that hard, that Superman gets BJs from new teen members who might join the JL they start to freak out. Never mind that it's all in good fun, and that the book is selling respective numbers. I'm telling ya if I could put down 52 I don't think I'd buy another DC comic.
