With filming beginning today on HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE, I was curious on when this news would come down the wires. A few days ago, star Daniel Radcliffe revealed the role of Professor Horace Slughorn, a pivotal character in the next installment, was already cast but his lips were shut until it was revealed elsewhere. Now, it has.

In an interview with Garth Franklin over at Dark Horizons, actor Jim Broadbent has revealed he will indeed be donning the Walrus like mustache for the HBP and Deathly Hallows.

Broadbent: Who am I? He’s called Horace Slughorn. He’s a retired teacher of magic who’s drawn back out of retirement because he’s got some secrets they need in the battle against the Deatheaters and he’s quite star struck as a teacher and he’s drawn back into the fold because he likes to notch up celebrity students, and he’s drawn back by Harry.

Question: Is he a comic character?

Broadbent: He is quite a comic character, yes. I haven’t started yet. I’ve had endless costume fittings and makeup and …

Question: What kind of costumes?

Broadbent: Tweedy sort of things with a bit of padding. He’s an older man, I’m aging up again.

HALF BLOOD PRINCE hits theaters everywhere November 21, 2008.

Another excellent actor enters the Harry Potter franchise. He's not exactly who I imagined for Slughorn, but I expect great things from him, nevertheless.

I love the books and the movies, although, Order of the Phoenix was my least favorite book, and in turn, my least favorite movie. The movies just felt like a whole lot of nothing going on. I think the next two are just going to be amazing,,,,,they should really split them into four seperate movies,,,,,that would be awesome, but they won't,,,they will try to squeeze it all into a 2 hour movie.

Damn. No disrespect to Broadbent but I was really hoping they'd get Bob Hoskins for the role, he's who I pictured in my head while I read the book and I can think of no one more fitting for the role. I'd like second the above posts suggestion of spiting the next 2 films into 4 movies. I'm surprised that the powers that be aren't seriously considering this now that the end of the franchise is in sight. After only 5 movies this this has already become the highest grossing movie franchise in history, you'd think the studio would want to keep this thing going for as long as they possibly can.

I'm glad they've kept the films as singles, but as the last one ended, I felt it could have been significantly longer without complaint from neither my butt nor my bladder.

Didn't this guy also have a part in the Moulin Rouge? Can't remember. I've seen him in a couple of films bu can't remember those either. Anyway, looks good for Slughorn. Here's hoping Bill Nighy(?)/ Davy Jones, makes it to the Harry Potter universe.

I could see them splitting Book 7 into two movies -- there's so much going on there. Personally, I'd rather just sit in the theater for 3-4 hours. Half-Blood Prince, OTOH, would be horrible if split into two movies. It didn't do much for me up until the very end and I have no idea where the cut down the middle of the story would take place.

Broadbent was in Moulin Rouge; he also played the wacky and sad father in Bridget Jones' Diary. He first caught my attention in Bullets Over Broadway playing a neurotic and melodramatic stage actor. I think he can definitely play the nuanced role of Slughorn. Bill Nighy seems to be a fan favorite for the evil werewolf. Bob Hoskins would definitely be an interesting choice, but sometimes who they cast takes ownership of the role in a wholly surprising way. I was totally psyched for Patrick Stewart as Lupin, but David Thewlis has totally owned the role. I think Broadbent will do fantastically.

Sweet! This thought struck me after my third read of the book. I'd just rewatched Moulin Rouge and for some reason I couldn't keep this guy out of my head while reading the sections with Slughorn. Excellent choice.

Excellent choice and I agree Bill Nighy would be fantastic as Greyback. Here's hoping Patrick Stewart will get the nod as Dumbledore's bro in the Deathly Hallows.
