The Hollywood Reporter is posting a more accurate list of actors that are in contention for the role of Batman. This Batman will co-star in the sequel to the Man of Steel. Currently that film is either being called Batman vs. Superman or Superman vs. Batman. The film, right now, is being based on Frank Miller’s comic “The Dark Knight Returns”. The Hollywood Reporter had this insight on who Warner Brothers wants to cast as the Dark Knight.

“the real insight is the kind of Bruce Wayne/Batman that Snyder is looking to cast. According to numerous sources, this Wayne/Batman will be in the late 30s or around the 40 mark. He will be established and rugged. This new movie will not seek to recount an origin story or the rise of the Dark Knight”.

Here is their list of contenders:

Josh Brolin, 46 --  Gangster Squad, Jonah Hex, Goonies and the upcoming Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (A Frank Miller Comic).

Ryan Gosling, 32 -- Gangster Squad, The Place Between the Pines, Blue Valentine. Also the youngest actor on this list.

Joe Manganiello, 36  -- True Blood, Spider-Man. Rumor has it he was almost Superman in Man of Steel

Richard Armitage, 41 -- The Hobbit Trilogy, Captain America

Max Martini, 43 -- Revenge, Castle, Hawaii Five-O, and Pacific Rim, and Captain Phillips (plays a Navy Seal Commander.

Matthew Goode, 35 -- Stoker, Watchmen (Zach Snyder Connection).

Among these actors, who makes the best Batman?

None!!! I would go with James Badge Dale. I think he could play a very intersting Bruce Wayne/Batman. The trick with this role is not playing Batman, it's playing Bruce Wayne. And with the exception of Mathew Goode, no one on that list can play Bruce Wayne.

Richard Armitage would be my choice, he rocks and was awesome in Strike Back

Wait a god damn minute. Huh? What is DC thinking?

TDKR is based like 30 years after Supes and Bats meet. Why would you base a NEW relationship on that?

This is not making much sense. Yeah if this is the like 5th film with the two of them in the finale performance in the roles, then yeah.

Christ. Just look at the B:TAS and S:TAS merger, WORLD'S FINEST. The script practically writes itself.

How hard is this? You could have it be 3-5 years AFTER MOS and still then have some solo MOS flicks thrown in there.

its a good way to kill the DC cinematic universe. Why would you have an older Batman if you are trying to get to the point that you can have JLA?? So batman is over 50 in the movie?

Just when it looks like Warner Bros,. might be getting their act together, they pull stuff like this

Basing it on Dark Knight Returns??? WTF? I guess this explains Miller's involment.

I don't like this. The Dark Knight Returns is the end of an era. It's the end of Batman's career. This will not do if they want to lead into a future JL movie franchise.

Unless it's loosely based like Clark working with the government to take down Bats. But that will be just a butchering of a classic.

As Laz said and I have preached before, TAS World's Finest 3 parter was the best Batman/Superman ever. It could easily be adaptable and have two prime villains in Lex and Joker. Fuck, TAS never gets any respect.

Joe Manganiello please. He it tall, ripped as a side of beef, has great exposure, has the jaw line, and even has the scary Batman stare down pat.

He was even the second runner for the part of Superman in Man of Steele.

I like Joe Manganiello.  Would've liked to have seen him as Superman.  The problem with it was according to Joe himself, that he couldn't get the scheduling to qork with his commitment to True Blood, so this is probably out as well unless something can be worked out.

I think there's some confusion in the reports for this movie.  From everything I've seen from Goyer and Snyder, it is not based on The Dark Kinght Returns.  They used the quote from that comic and now everyone wants to say its based on that graphic novel.  They used the quote to illustrate the philosophical approach they will be taking with their relationship, not adapting the entire storyline.

I've also read recently where Goyer has said in this universe there are no other costumed heroes before Man of Steel, so I don't see how a 40 year old Batman would work, but maybe early to mid-30s could work.

They are not directly copying TDKR for Superman vs Batman. The are brining in Miller to see what ways they can riff on the basic story. Which is what Nolan has done with all of the Batman movies. The original had elements of 'The Man Who Falls", "Year One", "The Long Halloween" TDK has elements of "Year One", "The Long Halloween" and "Killing Joke". TDK-Rises had elements of "Knightfall", "No Man's Land" and "TDK-Returns". They are never going to do a literal translation of any of the comics.  My guess is that they will take the basic theme "Superman as Government Lacky/Potential Threat" that existed in TDK-Returns and use elements of Kingdom Come "Luthor manupluatint things to make it appear to the public that Superman is a potential threat. This pulls Batman out and you have the classic fight. More likely Batman will be represented as the Villian/Anti-hero in the film.

Yeah, the info is early and fuzzy on what, when, and the how for this movie. What age should Bats be and how far into his career this is. Is Superman the first superhero or is he the first superpowered hero? They've implied that the next season of the TV show Arrow will hint at the events in MoS.

Nobody on the list turns on my Bat-signal. They are all fine actors but they don't strike me right. Brolin has a street thug cop attitude which I personally don't see for Bats. He should be more calculating.

Definitely don't like Manganiello. He's just a large walking beefcake and would make a better Bane than a slimmer, athletic Batman.

I could see Gosling doing it but he wouldn't be my choice.

Don't know enough about all the British guys. Are they all British?

I mainly know Martinelli from the TV show The Unit. He was great in that and that was a great show. Dennis Haybert as the commander of the Unit was the know everything, perfectly trained and capable, always says the right thing guy I would want on my side!.......Waitaminnit... Dennis Haybert for Batman! He could sell you Allstate before he kicked your azz.

What about Miles Teller?
