Director Bryan Singer: New genre master?

Director Bryan Singer (Superman Returns) has signed a deal with ABC to develop three different scripts. One of the three scripts is guaranteed to go to pilot.

What sets Singer's deal with ABC apart from other high-profile, three-for-one pacts is that it is not tied to a studio. This gives Singer the flexibility to develop the scripts with writers at any studio.

Singer will develop the projects through his company, Bad Hat Harry Productions, and will executive-produce and direct the pilot.

Since Singer is hopelessly overrated. I expect nothing special here.

No. I don't really hate Singer. I still think that X1 and 2 are fun. But X3 is just better (IMHO). But yes! He did screw up Superman.

I'll be there

So Far Superman is his best work. House is inacurate silly and has no medical basis. How would you like your Doctor poping pills and nearly killing every patient until he cures the patient. A better name for House M.D. should be Malpractice M.D. you could have a cross over every week with Boston Legal. It could start on Fox at 8 then after a very well deserved hour it could end on Abc . It could open with DENNY CRANE FOR THE CRIPPLED DOCTOR....

Once again I see that only people with hate in thiere hearts post comments. Singer is a good director. X1-2 were amazing! X3 was mediocre at best. It was just a movie to see how many x-men they could throw in the mix and have little attention paid to the story or character building...weak. Singer does an amazing job with character building and demonstrated this quite well with superman. I wouldnt be surprised if those of you who dont like Singer were fans of Joel Schumakers Batman jokes.

I have no hate for Singer . I never liked any of the X Men movies . But Superman Returns is the best movie this summer , Singer is catching hell for this because he didnt try to update Superman with a new suit or a new formula. He deserves credit for keeping true to the Superman that Christopher Reeve made so recognized. He kept the music( Take A Note Michael Mann) He kept the innocence of Clark Kent.. I love Smallville but it has little to do with Superman that we know. Singer should be commended for not destroying a part of world history. As for Schumaker jokes come on Nipples?

X1 - Story and characters were very good. Action run in the mill. Same thing for X2. X3 - Action was very good and nicely paced. Story and characters were run in the mill. Superman Returns - Some good action sequences. Poorly paced. Run in the mill plot and characters. However, some decent emtional pay offs. Bottom line; Singer is a good director. But not well suited for action films. He gets the characters, plots, and emotion right. But he doesn't pace the action well. And, he's horrible at casting female leads. Singer should stick to dramas or mysterys. Action films with average action is just as bad having great action and a bad plot( except for the sublime "Desperado")or no character developement. One without the other doesn't cut it.

I don't think Singer did a bad job with Superman as much as let's face it. I don't think that the Character translates to film as good as he did in the 70-80's movies. This is a different time and age that we live in and it's hard to make a Superman Movie because the ideals that Superman stands for are out of tune with the current trend of Super Hero Movies today. I mean think about it. Bryan Singer plotted both of his X-Men movies around who? Wolverine. Why because Wolverine is the most anti-hero of the X-Men and who was his foil? Cyclops. Why because he represented most of the sqeaky clean hero archeotypes that a certain caped superhero represents. It wasn't the action, of the film, it wasn't the pacing of the film. Singer made a perfect bridge between the Superman II to now, it's kind of sad because had this film come out over a decade ago it would have been a monster hit. But at this stage in the game the public doesn't want a hero that's going to fight the bad guy with a smile and send him to jail and refrain from killing. We don't want Superman, we want Neo, John McClain, Batman, Punisher, etc etc. Guys that basically are a bit on the Darkside and don't mind getting a bit of dirt on their hands to get the job done.

cinemaman12 and ponyboy76, what does it say about us, as a society, that we don't buy into a hero who does the good things and fights the good fight just because it's the right thing to do? Superman does what he does and makes sacrafices because it's the right thing to do. I think it's sad that we don't see ourselves in that kind of character. Are we so selfish that we'd want bring a hero down to our level of being rather than step up(or man up) to his or hers? With that said, Superman Returns isn't doing that great becase it wasn't a movie that we wan't to go see again. It was just OK. Not great. Batman Begins had us returning to see it 2, or in some cases, 3 times over the period of it's release. Thats why it faired well as the weeks went on. Once you saw Superman, you were like, "It was good, but I'm going to see Pirates next weekend." There was no thought of seeing it twice for most of us. I was going to see SR at my local IMAX after I saw it at the regular theater. After I saw it, I didn't have urge to see it again.
