What They Say
Its latest sequel series has already become a cult show too. Now, the original series is out on DVD for the first time. Contains episodes 1 thru 3. Full screen. Dolby, stereo. With an English audio track and optional English subtitles. Contains episodes 1: BUBBLEGUM CRISIS, 2: BORN TO KILL, 3: BLOW UP.

The Review!
I don't think I have to repeat how good this series is, so I will let others do that. What I will discuss is the disks themselves and the content found on them. For one thing is the way they are presented on the individual DVDs. It is in the same order they were actually released in when they came out originally in Japan starting in 1987 and that includes the extra materials found on the individual DVDs. This produces a look that may make you think that this was just a transfer of the Special LD box set that came out last year in the way it is presented and of the content of the product.
The animation is crisp, similar to the quality found on the AnimEigo disks, except for some jittering on episode one. The subtitles are a single color (white) and use italics to differentiate between song lyrics and dialogue and not the rainbow of colors used in the AnimEigo release. They also use the two line subtitle convention and large fonts to provide easy reading and if you don't want them, you can turn off the subtitles as they are not burned on the video. Another nice touch was to subtitle all the music videos and they also subtitled each song's title in both romanji and it's English translation.

The menu is nicely laid out with a mixture of English and kanji in the menu selection on a background representing a particular character per disk (Sylvia on disk1, Priss on disk2 and Linna and Nene on disk3). The only problem with the menu was the placement of the music videos under the extra's menu and not the main menu like the other episodes. Other than that you can easily navigate the menu, but you need to know Kanji to do understand most of your selection choices.

Another nice thing was to add booklets in each jewel case with original cover art, menu listings, episode credit listing, story blurbs, profiles and comments about the episodes including the music videos, and even a message from the Knight Sabers. All together this produces a really wonderful set that any Bubblegum Crisis fan would want in their possession.
