With the trailer just days away at the Super Bowl, more and more information is being let loose for those that are desperate to know every detail. One of a couple of areas of the Captain America movie that hasn't had all that much light shed on it recently is that of Bucky Barnes, being played by Sebastian Stan. A new feature piece at Hero Complex has them talking with the films director, Joe Johnston, about how they wanted to approach the character that's been there since the start of Captain America by capturing a good part of who he is but making it work in a cinematic sense.
“Sebastian brought something really interesting and slightly on the dark side and really compelling to watch — when he’s on camera, you’re fascinated by watching him,” Johnston said. “In a great cast, I thought he really stood out and brought some unexpected things to the role. Everyone brought something to the movie and a lot of them brought something great but I was most pleasantly surprised by what Chris brought and what Sebasatian brought in a much smaller role as Bucky.”
Johnston goes on to talk about how Sebastian Stan was originally trying for the role of Steve Rogers but didn't have exactly what they were looking for, but felt that he was the right one to go for Bucky. And the role of Bucky was one that they decided to allow the writers to go with a clean slate on for the most part, which helped to update and rework the relationship between the two characters so that it has a far more involved feeling that felt more natural.
“We took some liberties with the relationship between the two guys,” Johnston said. “In our story, Bucky is already in the service, he’s already joined up and is being sent overseas while Steve is still struggling to get in the army. That’s different than what you may have read in the comics. It adds a nuance to the relationship that pays off later. They’re closer in age, too — they’re virtually the same age. That’s not the case at all if you go back to the old comics.”
Keeping Bucky from sidekick material is likely for the best when it comes to adapting it into this cinematic world. In addition to the words from Johnston, some new pictures came out as well, one with the pair together which you can see below while we've also seen some new pictures from French edition of Premiere magazine which ComingSoon.net has scanned in and posted that shows off more from the upcoming feature.

I'm cool with this , they can use this to possibly set up a whole Winter Soldier storyline later on in a future flick. Besides I think I like the idea more of them being partners then one of them being a sidekick.
