Budget Cuts for THOR Movie?

That's what recently chosen director Matthew Vaughn has indicated in a piece he wrote for The Guardian. The man behind the upcoming THOR sat down with screenwriter Mark Protosevich to put some fine touches on the script treatment so they can begin production on this film as soon as possible. As soon as they were done, celebrating a weekend's hard work, Marvel Studios phoned the director with an issue.

Afterwards, we drove home, where I greeted screenwriter Mark Protosevich as a guest.

In truth, I did not treat him very well as I forced him to work for the whole weekend - he is the writer on Thor, my next film, which I am directing with Marvel. The weekend was a success - we finished the script and celebrated with an '88 Palmer, and I was feeling good and ready to tackle the necessary evil of film promotion.

My phone has just rung. Marvel loves the script. The only problem is that it has been costed at $300m and they ask how I am going to reduce it by $150m. I think I prefer being asked what it's like working with De Niro.

$300 million seems a little much,,,,,even $150 million seems like a big gamble. I have no doubts that this movie will be good, but this is a big sell to the average movie going audience. I am looking forward to see what they do with this.

Couldn't agree with you more Whiskey... I thought this guy was just kidding. My initial thought was that Thor would be lucky to have a budget of $70m. I think the character is cool, but quite honestly, I really know nothing about Thor, other than he is a character based on a Norse god.

Hmm, a big budget doesn't necessarily mean a good film. However, if this has the right story you wont need to know that he's a marvel character or much more than the fact he's a norse god goin in.

I think the guy was just sh%tting, ya know bragging up his script... all I ask in this movie is that they let Thor be Thor... we need to be staring up at that screen thinking, man now that is the son of a god... he needs to be flying around, commanding the weather and crushing the bad guys... The really cool thing with Thor is that you can have this whole superhero story with him in our world, then switch to Asguard at some point for some serious epic style action... If done right it could be amazing.

$300 million? Really? I really couldn`t see Marvel spending that much money on Thor, especially with all the other flicks they are about to put into production. I`m surprised the budget was even at $150. Like you guys I assumed that the budget would be around $75 -85 mil, tops. I guess Marvel really wants to throw everything into this movie. I really hope it works out.

Actually, Marvel is the one wanting it cut down to 150 mil. But still, is anyone thinking the same thing as me when I wrote this article? Who in the hell put the price tag at 300 million and WHY? Matthew Vaughn? How the heck did someone estimate 300 million??? We know there will be scenes of Thor in his home realm but I can't believe there would be that much CGI scenes that would drive the asking price to 300 million! Jarrod S

I get scared when they start at high budgets. That means no story and s f/x only. Low budget means they have to have a good story and the s f/x actually make sense and people actually have to work.
Batman777 10/9/2007 6:42:20 AM
300 million? 300 million???
wessmith1966 10/9/2007 7:17:18 AM
He had to be kidding about $300 million. For an unproven director who's last movie, a fantasy, tanked big time at the box office? There's no way Marvel would spend that much on X-Men, much less Thor. I'd be very surprised if marvel invested $150 million in this movie. I could see $90 million tops. I wonder if this will lead to Vaughn leaving the project...I can hear Brett Ratner's footsteps! lol
ponyboy76 10/9/2007 7:42:57 AM
Wessmith, that wasn`t even funny...you know he could be reading this. And what I meant in my last statement was that if Marvel is throwing 150mil at it then they are throwing everything into it. I mean maybe by today`s standards 150 isn`t that much, but it seems a lot for this one. Dazzler, low budget in no way means they`ll have a good story. I use any Uwe Boll film as proof of that. It also depends on what you consider "low budget". I would consider anything below 20mil to be a big studio "low budget" flick. That`s only big studio. As my man RR has proven, you can make a decent flick for less than a million.
