Bungie says "Halo 2" wasn't what it should have been

In an interview with GameSpot, various staff members at Bungie have gone on the record with some harsh criticism of Halo 2.

"We had about four to five weeks to polish Halo at the end, ... [but] we had none of that for Halo 2," engineer Chris Butcher told the magazine. "We miscalculated. We screwed up. We came down to the wire, and we just lost all of that. So Halo 2 is far less than it could and should be in many ways because of that. It kills me to think of it."

He added that they were being much more careful with Halo 3, "I know Halo 3 is going to be so much better."

Another staffer from Bungie attributed Halo 2 to driving off a cliff.

KJ's Take: Halo 2 was awful compared to Halo, and simply average when compared to other FPS games.  I own both and enjoyed both, but there was a clear drop off in quality.  Thus far Bungie seems to be doing everything right with regards to Halo 3, but lighting rarely strikes twice.  Here's hoping.

Interesting to see a company admit to mistakes in an active franchise. Because even though they're trying to hype Halo 3, they're also saying "The last time you bought a game from us, we didn't give you your money's worth," which is basically a reason to not trust them.

I never had complaints about Halo 2 except for all the idiot cheaters and modders who flooded the online multiplayer. I think this is a bold move because while they are admitting their flaws, they are also showing us that they have learned from those mistakes which will make Halo 3 that much better. I'm not worried, I've already got it pre-ordered.

It doesn't matter if they come out and say Halo 2 was crap[, everyone bought it already anyways.

i definitely thinks it's a nice gesture for them to admit their mistakes, and even so "their" mistakes was the fact they weren't given enough time to hone it properly. Other game franchises from companies such as blizzard entertainment, on the other hand, are given many months if not years to polish their games. Although they specialize in role playing and strategy types, this shows how crucial beta testing and refinement is to the end product. I still don't know why they rushed out halo 2 when they could have taken the whole engine back to formula and made an incredible sequel on the 360 platform. If they'd have done that the second gen. xbox would have flown off the shelves. We'll see how halo 3 is...i've mentioned this before in mania's comments sections but HL3, due to their awesome game production technique, will be much better than halo 3. I hope everyone at bungie and microsoft learns you can't rush a great game.

I agree with all of u on this subject. Halo2 was chill, easy and chill but not bad. there could always be modifications to it, but over all ok. I agree with Kaybar about Half-Life3. i didnt like the ending at all to HL2 and...well...it just was dissapointing and abrupty ended, but the awesome thing about HL2 and Halo was that they took there time and the end result was good. I cant wait(well actually i can) to get these games and looking forward to both. I personally think HL3 will be better in some ways then Halo3.

Well, for a company like Bungie to admit Halo 2 was flawed is something else...so I guess it's good that Halo 2 turned out so damned good. Anyone see any flaws in Halo 2? I sure didn't.

As far as game play goes I actually think Halo 2 was the far better product. However, I felt shorted with the sloppy storyline and abrupt ending. When it came down to it I just didn't care as much about where the story was taking me. The first Halo was far superior when it came to suspense, setting up a real conflict, and seeing the story through to conclusion. Hopefully, with the battle over Earth as the focus for Halo 3 we won't have a repeat. (And please get rid of the flood. Been there, done that and it's getting old!)

Halo2 was deffinately a lame duck compared to the first. However I'm glad they admiited to their mistakes. I have a friend who works in the game industry. One freelance project he worked on went to the stores in it's ALPHA state, because of pressure put on the publisher by Wal-mart. Essentially they had a truck load of "updates" for people in the next few months. It's was such a ridiculous situation, but not the fault of the actual guys making the game. It was the powers that be... Same with movies like X-men 3, or the last few seasons of Alias. The powers that be get their fingers in the pot, and make one nasty stew.

X-Men 3 was rushed because Fox was pissed at Bryan Singer for leaving to do Superman. Further proving, not that we need further proof, that Fox is run by dumbasses.
GentlemenDeath 1/29/2007 2:15:50 PM
All the x-men movies were worthless and shoulda got rid of bryan singer when they had a chance..from someone who used to read the comics these movies were bad, bad, and wait really worse! Superman....i wont even comment on that horrible movie...i just have a problem with this singer guy and will forever!
