BURN NOTICE: Breaking and Entering

Burn Notice is a series that feels like it’s on the cusp of being forgettable but that one thing, keeps it from fading into oblivion. The series at first blush appears to be extremely derivative. Much of what you see in episodes of this series is obviously leeched from CSI Miami and even old school Miami Vice. The running dialogue from the main character is a bit over baked too. You may find yourself thinking – “What if MacGyver was a spy?” So the show starts off with tons of quick pans of the Florida coastline and the city and some clever voiceover from Michael (Donovan) that along with the previews does a good job of catching viewers up on the story. Michael was a spy until he was burned. When a spy is burned it’s sort of an extreme version of getting fired, which usually culminates with the death of said spy. Michael is in hiding though, trying to find out who burned him and why. The show premise is good but what may keep you coming back are the side characters. Gabriel Anwar and Bruce Campbell are both excellent supporting characters that desperately need some character development.

This week Michael thought he was close to finding the answers he has been so desperate for. Instead what happens basically is that Michael gets a new handler - a cold female not afraid to use threats on children to get what she wants. She makes a deal with Michael to meet him if he does a job for her. The job is to work with a computer nerd to steal important data from a bunch of mercenaries. The computer nerd is trapped into this job because the handler and her cohorts have his family held hostage and are threatening to kill them if he doesn’t retrieve the data. So Michael is forced to do this job, not just to get the answers he wants but to also save this family.

This is a series that features a bit of serialized storytelling but is mostly a job of the week kind of show – similar to Supernatural. If this new handler is connected directly to Michael’s burn and throughout the season we do get closer and closer to the answers this show could get a new layer of story that makes it a must watch. Hopefully the series doesn’t go the way of Smallville where a character almost gets an answer but is suddenly knocked out at just the right time over and over again throughout the season. Lois Lane should have brain damage, but that’s another show…

In the end the things that are derivative are still derivative but as I said the secondary characters are a lot of fun and the entire cast seems to have good chemistry which makes the series a good watch. Not all is perfect is supporting cast land though. While Sharon Glass does a good enough job playing Michael’s mom her scenes come across extremely unnatural and wedged into the show. When things are at their craziest Michael gets a call and he has to stop everything to go visit her. It’s supposed to be funny but often it just kills the pace of the episode. Problems aside Burn Notice is still a fun and intriguing show that had a solid start to this season.

I like is "running dialogue". I think it's funny and clever.
Just watched this show for the first time last week. Saw three episodes and then watched then new one for this season. I think it's a great show.

Totally agree with you Almost. This is a GREAT show. Caught most of the season 1 marathon last week as well as the season 2 premier. Great cast, great action and I really dig the Magnum PI/McGuyver(spelling?) vibe the show gives off.

3 DAYS

I really liked season 1 but it started really slow, and i almost gave up after the first episode. only the magic that is the Bruce kept me coming back, until I realised how much I enjoyed it each week. I love the running voice over, I love the 'this is how you make a cell phone into a ____' and all that spy stuff.

that said I didn't care for this episode. I think the editing, especially @ the begining killed it. I loathe stop cuts, I can't think of another visual trick that angers me more than during a fight or chase or what have you and the action stops, pauses or whatever. I know the first season tried to do some things like that w/ the editing/visuals but that chase scene early on in the episode just killed its own momentum w/ those stupid stop cuts

Stop-cuts can be used well for comedy though.

Flint, right there with you bro. I love this show and I definitely think it is a cross between Magnum and MacGyver with the whole spy thing thrown in. I think USA is really starting to come into its own as a network. So many of there shows are new takes on old 80s detective shows. Some people may gripe about that, but I love it. Michael Weston in many ways is the new Thomas Magnum. I started watching this show in its encore airing this spring and I have becomed hooked. Bruce of course is awesome and definitely is Rick to Weston's Magnum. I love this show and hope it runs for a long time.

This show is a lot of fun to watch as "popcorn" t.v. in the vein of Magnum and Macgyver. And with genre actors Bruce Campbell and Tricia Helfer (cylon to spy-handler... hmmmmmmm), what's not to like?!

This is a great show. I watched from the beginning last season. There was a point in the first episode when Micheal asked for half of his fee up front and the second when the job was done, I thought to myself, "Is he Repairman Jack?" This show is closer to any movie that will ever get made.

"Sharon Gless does a good enough job playing Micheal's mom"? C'mon. The interaction between the two is some of the funniest stuff on the show.

Burn Notice is Fun. One of the most fun series out now. Absolutely Gabrielle Anwar and Bruce Campbelle are the heart and soul of the show. Gabrielle steals every scene she's in and Campbelle is Campbelle and he reminds you in ever line and gesture why he's the man. Donovan is an excellent leading man, he can do smart, cocky, and worried often in the same scene. And he doesn't try to hog the show. He lets his supporting cast take the scenes which is what makes this show so much fun. and apart from all that Burn Notice is just plain fun. One of those few series I can watch whatever mood I'm in and just relax and feel a little bit better.

And Tricia Helfer was excellent.
